defer letter

hahaha sounds like me last year =p

but my story ended sadly, with a B+ in french…I only needed an 86 to get an A- and I couldn’t do it. lol…I got an 82 >.< ugh. soooo close

LOL, I needed a 110 in French, and our final was an AP test, which means that I was happy with my 83 on the final (that should mean a 5 on the actual exam, right?). I got my A’s in my other classes, though :)

im definitely getting a B in bio this semester. i don’t mind that much for college admissions, since my other grades are good, but now i cant get the award for straight A’s (it also might have something to do with my bio teacher not giving me a book until about november, something that my parents and i have been adamantly complaining about and will continue until he fixes something).

First “B” ever in AP Psychology today!

I made my first C in Calculus this 6 weeks!!
Yikes…
All my other grades are above a 97 and I get one STUPID C in Calculus. But it was partially because I have missed more than half of my calculus classes in the last month or two because of a series of trips to the hospital/doctor’s appointments/missing for swim meets.
So my Calc teacher is talking to my GC to write a note about it in the Midyear Reports…still though, will a C hurt me horribly?? I can get a B for my semester average.

Don’t you hate it when you do really well in all your classes (like j07’s 97’s) and one class kills everything? I wish we could reallocate points from one class to another.

will Bs matter on the midyear report?..i’ve been slacking this semester

I don’t think Bs will matter that much, especially if…and excuse me if I’m wrong, but haven’t you been accepted ED? If so, then I can’t see Bs mattering that much…I think that if you drop down to a C average they MIGHT rescind their offer but probably not for Bs.

does high school GPA even matter at all after applying to college? like do employers see it when you apply for a job? just wondering lol i just though of it

The GPA doesn’t matter when you apply to college. That’s only if you drop down to like a D Average…And it doesn’t work that way. It works GPA wise. They don’t “rescind their offer” if you have a C average. They rescind it if your GPA reaches the 2.5 Overall level. And that’s assuming you barely tried senior year. There’s no quota saying uh-oh you get straight D’s your senior year, you don’t deserve it. You can have a 5.0 and Get straight D’s and still manage to have an adequate GPA.

haha wow I really feel a lot better now that everyone else has similar stories.
I’ve had a straight 4.0 up until now, but when the mid year report comes around I’ll probably have one or two Bs, which I hope won’t hurt me too much.

lol j07 I feel sorry for you.
AP Psychology at my school sucks.
They call it AP Study Hall because it’s so easy.
It’s like the best/worst class in my school because they do nothing at all haha

@OMZ, j07: I don’t think that one B will hurt too much. After a string of A’s, and all A’s except a B in senior year, I highly doubt that it will look like senioritis has kicked in.

I agree that there are too many grade discrepancies between schools. The SAT subject tests and AP tests should be looked at more deeply in the application.

What if we get a C senior year?
I have missed so much AP/IB Calc BC this year that I got a 79 last grading period and will probably get a C again this grading period. My GC said she would make note of why (I got As in math up until then!) and that she didn’t think it would make a huge difference because my overall GPA/rank won’t drop by more than from a 3.996 to 3.991 or something, but still…I am sooo worried about this. I don’t want to get rejected from a place like Princeton just because I was absent too much in Calculus (not my fault) and couldn’t keep up. Will a school base a decision based ONLY on senior year grades? (NOT THE TRANSCRIPT, SENIOR YEAR GRADES)

If you were deferred ED, then the C almost guarantees a rejection RD. In the deferral letter, it says that if they deferred you because they genuinely wanted you for the RD pool, then senior year grades are something that they will consider. On the off chance that you were a deferred applicant who was borderline, a C isn’t going to help, even if you have an excuse (unless you have a really good excuse). I figure that my B is enough to warrant a rejection for Pton RD, and rejections from Stanford and Caltech. There are plenty of kids who have a true 4.0 from 9th through 12th grade that Princeton can choose from.

I can’t believe they still deferred you whoamg. You had some frikken amazing stats.

whoamg, I think you place too much emphasis on grades

but then, I am worried about my grades…I am going to get between 1 and 3 B’s this mp, and I got 1 B last marking period. I also got 2 B+s in past years…but I don’t think this should hurt me too much? =/ at least it won’t affect my rank…

ahhhh I think I just got my first 2 Bs this semester.
And they’re both 89s =/
I’m not worried about what Princeton will think.
Now I’m generally just worried about Rice and Wellesley.

(By the way, it doesn’t affect my rank either. My weighted will still go up to like a 5.81 out of 6.0 lol)

ughh but my unweighted will probably be like a 3.93 now

@PrincetonianKing: my stats were good (or so I’d like to think), but compared to those of applicants like GR Elton (4800/4800 SAT total, a torrent of 5’s on AP exams), I can understand why I was deferred. Also, my extracurriculars were relatively weak; I had commitment and determination once I found my interest in computers, but that was perhaps too late, in 10th grade. Also, I only had one year of a sport, and no musical instrument, which probably hurt my chances of admission. Lastly, I had no national awards to show the results of what I’ve done. I do really appreciate the comment, and I still have a tiny bit of hope for RD, but I’ve moved on, and I’m really interested in Berkeley’s EECS program as well. Good luck to you in the future!

@pleonasm: I may be putting too much emphasis on grades, but I think that many will agree that for a deferred applicant to make a comeback in RD, near perfection is a requirement. Many applicants, including myself, were deferred with a 4.0 unweighted GPA. If a 4.0 was not enough, then will a 3.x do? Of course, I do not think that straight A’s in the first semester of senior year will help much either; those who are initially deferred and then later accepted usually win a prestigious award or gain a significant leadership position during the time of purgatory/deferral.

@OMZ: Don’t sweat it! Your GPA was and is amazing, and your SAT scores are strong as well. And that’s not even mentioning your outstanding HOSA accomplishments. I’m sure that Wellesley or Rice (or both!) will take you.

Ultimately, I think that the most important thing that we can all do is to continue working hard during the second semester of senior year. Personally, I think I’m going to take a break off of school (as in, for once, stop fearing a B or two) and commit myself to a year-long software development exam that is equal to two or three years of work experience. I’m sure that all of you have projects that you’ve been wanting to work on as well. Just don’t slack off and later regret it! After all, for the last three and a half years, did you work hard for college applications, or for yourself?
