Deferred Ivy, Rejected State School

The OOS acceptance rate for UNC is 13%, while acceptance rate for OOS applicants to GATech is 19%. With those statistics, there is absolutely no reason for you to have expected admission.

The good news is that it these were rejections from reaches, so it means that it doesn’t say much about the strength of your application.

UF isn’t a safety for most students. A 31 ACT puts you in the middle 50% for UF but certainly not a safety. What is your GPA? What specific scholarship did you get for UCF?

@Lindagaf @flprepaidmom

I have a 4.72 gpa weighted and 3.98 UW (I’m 2 in my class).

I got the gold Pegasus scholarship that is 18,000 a year and I have the highest bright future award.

Unless you are full pay at Purdue, UCF is really your only match and safety. Nice award though and BF is very hard leave. Are your parents involved here at all? How did you come by your list?

Never say never, keep hope up for reaches, learn to love your safety and apply to two more matches if you still can.

@Collegecid67 That UCF Pegasus Gold is a 4 year award, not her year. So it’s $4,500 per year and not a full ride, but still very nice.

I am not quite sure how you came up with your list of schools, but that is water under the bridge now because you have an affordable college to attend.

Congrats on your award and your acceptance!

You definitely have a great chance at UF, but I wouldn’t call it a safety. They rarely give merit so your best price is going to be UCF. Good luck! I

So it really came down to expectations. UCF was the only school you applied to that was close to a safety for you with pretty much all others being reaches of some sort when you take residency, major, and round in to account.

I’m curious what your counselor said about your list. Did they set your expectations right?

These state schools would not be a safety even if you were instate, despite having scores within range. I am also curious to hear what your counselor said.

If you want to get out of Florida, do apply to the colleges I listed above. Perhaps add some test optional universities such as Marist or Muhlenberg which would offer merit for a 31. WPI and UDayton should be on your list.
I agree with purpletitan: did your GC help you with this list?
What’s the average act at your high school?

Is UCF still affordable for your family since the grant is ~$14k/year less than you expected?

There’s always U of New Mexico. With those stats you’d get In-state tuition right off the bat (~7,500). And they are accepting apps until Feb 1.

Seconding UNM. Nice, dry weather. Cool town. Great campus. Fewerr “growth-spurt” related problems than UCF.
