A Green belongs to the Green Party because green is an adjective and a noun. Democrat is not an adjective and a noun, it’s just a noun. The proper grammatical construction is “Democratic Party”. Sorry if you think that’s an attempt to “hijack” a positive word, but maybe you should’ve complained way back when these parties were naming themselves.

Poetsheart, I appreciate you sharing research and perspective on Farrakhan, post 117.

Do Democratics support higher taxes and Republicans oppose them? I don’t think so. As being a Democrat has nothing to do with democracy the name is false and misleading.

No more false or misleading than the claim that being a Republican has something to do with the republic.

barrons: “Democrat” is the noun in the same way as “autocratic” is the adjective created out of “autocrat”. “Republican” is both an adjective and a noun.

Similarly, in Canada, our left-wing party is the New Democratic Party, or NDP. When referring to a member, the noun is “New Democrat”. The Liberal party’s members are referred to as Liberals, the Conservative party’s members as Conservatives.

Do you really need to be taught this very simple grammar lesson, or are you just being willfully obtuse?

More like willfully disrespectful.

More like willfully Barrons.

I’ve known clumsy people named Grace; I’ve read about a War Between the States that was actually fought AMONG the states; people who call themselves “white” when they are in fact beige or pink, etc. etc.

We don’t usually demand that names be literally descriptive of the people and ideas they identify.

We do, however, demand civility on this site. According to the TOS, “Flames, insults, and personal attacks will not be tolerated.” http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/faq.php?faq=vb_faq#faq_new_faq_item So if you’re insulting other posters, regardless of the language you use to achieve the insult, you’re in violation of the rules, and perhaps you should find a different board where disrespect and personal insults are acceptable.

McCain is using the offensive term:

John McCain goes out of his way to say he will treat his opponents with respect, but just how much does McCain really respect Democrats?

For decades, Republicans have rubbed Democrats the wrong way by dropping the “ic” from the “Democratic Party.” In their telling, it becomes the “Democrat Party,” along with “Democrat Congress,” “Democrat opponents” and the like.

The political slur got particular attention in 2006 when President Bush used it regularly on the campaign trail for the midterm elections. In his 2007 State of the Union speech, Bush muddied his gracious congratulations to the opposing party by congratulating the new “Democrat majority,” despite the fact that his prepared text called for him to say “Democratic majority.”

Given McCain’s reputation for reaching across the aisle and his daily pledge to treat Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton with respect, Washington Wire was a little surprised to hear McCain using the same language.

[Washington Wire - WSJ.com : McCain References ‘Democrat Party’](http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/02/28/mccain-references-democrat-party/)

Hanna, I don’t think threatening people on this board shows much civility.

I’m sorry, could you point to the portion of the terms of service that you think I have violated?

I can’t believe that this silly discussion is still going on - the absolute horrors of someone using a noun instead of an adjective to describe a political party! Why that borders on hate speech in my book. I say throw them in jail and throw away the key.

Never mind that Republicans are routinely called “evil” (thank you Howard Dean) or “Brownshirts” (thank you Al Gore) or “would be ayatollahs” (thank you TheDad). Or that someone who has dedicated (and risked) his life for this country is called General Betrayus (thank you move-on and mini).

I am not alleging you violated the terms of service. I am saying your threat does not reflect civility.

Civility on this site is defined by the terms of service. If I’m obeying the rules, then I don’t see the problem. But assuming for the sake of argument that it’s your standard of civility that matters, I don’t see how it is either threatening or uncivil to expect people who choose to participate in a moderated discussion board to follow the moderators’ rules. That’s particularly true where the moderators have asked for our assistance in enforcing the rules by putting a “Report Problem Post” link on every single one. Are you saying that the board is inherently threatening and uncivil?

If you can’t determine why the above is uncivil, I can’t explain it to you.

Can we all get a grip here? This has gotten a little out of hand now.

Wow, if using Democrat Party versus Democratic Party is “insulting” enough to be forced from CC, then this board will certainly become a pretty quiet place what with all the people that will have to be banned. Hanna, are you just having a bad day?

Actually I think that the slyly worded insult is the heart and soul of critical dialogue in any language…to be imaginative enough to word things in such a way that only the deliberately insulting “get” that they have been “dissed” in a response…the innocent may pause, but they assume the best of others. IMHO

How about we decide to call the Democratic party “Party A” and the Republican part “Party B” on this board…scratch that…then it would be a slur on the GOP because after all, we on C/C know how terrible a B is. Hmmm Would X and Y be OK? No, the Dems would complain that they were called the X-rated party. Aaaarhhh!
