Dental implants and bone grafts - any experiences

LOL, AHSTeacher, they just had those on sale at Big Lots! I bought a pack for my DH and s’s to use for camping trips and to take in their exercise/gym bags (bought 2 packs-- divided ip the brushes amongst the guys)

I was so impressed with how well they worked after another daughter’s wisdom teeth extraction I sent a fan letter!

Use plastic spoons for food. Don’t hurt the mouth as much!

Had tooth extraction yesterday (friday) AM, upper back molar. Synthetic bone material was inserted at the time. Just awakened to discover in my mouth a lump of what I imagine to be the synthetic bone (currently semi-solid). Anyone familiar with this? I should remember to never get any major procedure done on friday. Would you call the on-call # later today? I figure this means a failure of the initial grafting effort.

Yes- call and ask what you should do. So sorry this happened :(

Thanks for the sympathy and the encouragement to call. I just hate calling after hours when it’s not an emergency.

I’m halfway through and have been contemplating finishing. I had quite a bit of particulate material in my mouth over that initial period.

There was a great thread a year or so ago.

had same problem on both sides 20 years apart- a permanent bridge one side, implant other side. both doing ok but the bridge had to drill a good tooth and becomes sore sometimes (way i chew?) the implant is perfect. only thing it gets really cold with direct hit of ice cream. would choose the implant over the bridge

OP here. I am 2 months into the bone grafts. I had a lot of bone loss and the gums were also pretty messed up. Had bone grafts and a titanium barrier inserted over them with the remaining gum held together with stitches. Looked really messy and was very uncomfortable. I was a real worry wart about it all. I did end up calling the pager over the weekend once. They were wonderful about it. The other surgeon (not mine) was on call and he called back within minutes. Listened to my description of what was going on and was very reassuring - explained what he though it was and that it was not a problem But said to come in monday for my own doc to double check. He was also great and said everything was fine. Explained everything to me again - (I was rather doped up when they explained it the first time so did not remember most of it.). Had another appt to check how things were going plus xrays. Then this week the titanium barrier was taken out, and as he had told me, there was new gum growing underneath it - phew - relief (did I say i was nervous?).

Another check up in 2 months. Then probably another 2 months before the implants, and another 4- before the teeth. So far so good.

Really hope it all works. I hate having the temporary front teeth. I don’t enjoy eating - and i miss that! have actually lost some weight (about 7 pounds). Though it Would be more if it were not for the high cal starbucks drink and cake I buy every day before my 50 mile drive home!

Absolutely call. My oral surgeon gave me a pager number and said to call when needed and either he or his partner would call back. I did once, and they were great about it. Everything was fine, and they didn’t think they needed to see me immediately, but they had me come in on the monday to look and double check.

It was amazing how much better i actually felt physically once my mind had been put at ease. I went from been a rather weepy ball of misery to feeling cheery and 1000% physically less uncomfortable. Call.

RobD - I don’t know the specifics, but my SIL is somehow getting her medical insurance to cover part of the procedure. It is worth checking into.

To SwimC, congrats on the progress.
Thought I’d post a quick update… I did call the back-up # (as per the encouragement of you all), reached a dentist/dental surgeon with no knowledge of the case specifics. He did give some helpful advice re: keeping the area clean/clear and suggested I call the office when it opened on Monday morning. The apparent verdict is that what I feared was the synthetic bone was actually a ColloPlug (sp?) and losing it signaled no big problem. So, hurray, the treatment is still on course.
