calmom, that’s true. I would think that flights btn. Atlanta and Boston would be more economical than btn. Atlanta and a small airport as a general rule (I am sure that there are many exceptions).

I was really thinking of Allegheny when discussing travel, because the more major airports are about 1.5 hours away. Getting a friend to pick you up in bad weather and driving for what would be 3 hours (RT) in good weather would be impractical, dangerous, perhaps a burden, even if the friend is being paid.

E-C, I was reading over your posts about the CSS again, and just wanted to let you know that Lawrence has a school app that you can use instead of CSS, so that is $16 less for you. My DS also applied to 17 schools (we need aid) and if you haven’t done the spreadsheet that was recommended earlier, I encourage you to do that. I also second the opinion of those that recommend that you get a job to help with expenses. Having a little extra money as a cushion your first semester can be very helpful while you adapt to living on your own and budgeting. Since you mentioned bringing your car, you can earn gas and going out money.

Geneva is about one hour from Syracuse and Rochester. Juniata also has no major airport, only a small regional airport which doesn’t have flights from Atlanta. If I went to Knox, I’d have to fly into Chicago and take the Amtrack. I wonder if there is a bus/train if I went to Wheaton or Clark from Providence as well. Wooster is also about an hour from an airport. If I went to Earlham, I’d fly into Dayton OH. Appleton has its own airport.

Thanks MizzBee. I have a feeling a lot of these schools may have supplements for the CSS. I actually took a break from it because my head started to hurt, but will go back to researching in a couple days.

^^Well, travel to and from home (distance, costs, convenience) might be something that will help you shrink your list of schools to visit if packages are fairly similar.

Juniata has an Amtrak station within about 1 mile of the school, so it should be possible, but perhaps inconvenient, to take a train to an airport.

Oh please tell me that was an Ipad auto-correction on the touch screen!! LOL!! Stomach is grumbling with all this talk of food on the other thread!

Don’t know where that is, but if I typed that, it is pretty funny. What’s even more funny is when people think that the College of Wooster is located in Worcester, MA (logical conclusion).

There are nonstop flights from Atlanta to Appleton. However, it does depend on the day though. Some days you would have layovers. I just checked Delta for different dates and I just put in May 2nd (random date) and there would be a nonstop flight, but it costs $460 one way.

What major airport would I fly to if I went to Juniata? Thanks for telling me about the amtrack info.

It took me a while to even know how to pronounce Worcester. I always had pronounced it WORCHESTER. I was talking to a nice elderly Mass couple on the Eiffel Tower and they told me the locals would kill me if they heard me pronounce it wrong. At least I know you say it like “Wooster” now.

Wow. That must be new. Last I checked (we have family in several places in WI) there wasnt a direct flight. However, $900+ airfare is over the top.

Just my humble opinion…leave the car at home. It’s an expense you don’t need. You will have to pay for parking, gas, etc. If you don’t take the car to college, your family could get a discount on their insurance.

If you are worried about college finances, the last thing you need to take with you to college as a freshman is a car. Just my humble opinion.

NO, you do not need a car. As Thumper said, it is an unnecessary luxury. Someone else will have a car (if they are even allowed to as freshman) so surely you can find a friend to take you if you need to go somewhere. Didn’t you say you have a younger brother? Is he getting close to driving age?

Factor in those costs when considering the bottom line. My sons chose schools where we would not have this expense and they could survive, not to mention the fact that they did not own a car anyway ;)

Why do you think you need a car? Many colleges do not even allow freshmen to have cars on campus at all. A car is an unnecessary expense if finances are an issue. Sorry, I think it’s odd that one would be complaining about the costs of the PROFILE filings but would consider a car at college in the same thread. Sorry…just my opinion. One month of gas/insurance costs would pay for your Profile filings.

MOST (read that MOST) college students do not have cars with them on campus. They survive.
