Critical Studies is similar to Film Studies at other schools. Production major could become a camera person.

TrojanTransfer–I am confused why you want to go to SCA if you want to go into Law. You could apply to transfer to USC (and probably have a lot easier time getting in) if you apply to a major which is pre-law and then take electives or a minor in film related studies. Look at the list of minors at USC (USC is big on minors) and you will see different creative cinema related studies – stuff you probably never thought of. SCA is more for people who want to work in Hollywood cinema.

Lol, law is a track that might change for me, but I’m definitely not going into pre-law. Just from what 1Ls I know say, the LSAT is mostly logic and reading and such, which a CS degree from SCA would definitely help. In the CS promo materials one of the professors mentions law school. While obviously many people would go into the industry, law is an option. And my area of interest in law would obviously be closely related to film (entertainment law, intellectual property/copyright law).

CS seems like history, art, lit, politics, gov, etc. in one neat little package. Those are all common undergrad degrees that law students have.

@TrojanTransfer:
Don’t worry that you haven’t taken any film classes. I was accepted to SCA as a freshman for 2009, and I didn’t take any film classes at all (not that we had any…). Also, I didn’t have as much experience with film as other applicants. I really believe that they want to see creativity in general, not just related to film.

I agree that critical studies is a reasonable path to law school - analysis, critical thinking, and lots of writing are the key there. It appears to be an intellectually rigorous program, especially if you talk to the freshman who are currently taking Intro to Cinema from Drew Casper. In addition, unlike some of the film programs at other colleges, CA at USC offers a chance to learn filmmaking too. CS students take many of the same courses as production majors, and they graduate with the same major: Cinema-Television.

Awelex - good to see you back on CC. Are you still coming in the spring, or did you work out a fall start?

Thanks, FauxNom! Yep, I’m coming in the spring. My health is finally getting better, I got my visa and I’m pretty certain that I’ll get housing. So right now, I’m very pumped!
How’s USC treating your son? Is he enjoying himself?

The difference between Critical Studies and Production major is 2 Advanced Production classes, otherwise they take basically the same courses.
