Did I really deserve to get waitlisted?

I have absolutely no intention on attend WUSTL. At first I was angry that I got waitlisted from what I considered a “fall back”, then I realized that I made my day a whole lot better!
I love the fact that I didn’t waste my time applied to the Ervin scholarship thingy!

i applied and also got waitlisted.

i don’t consider myself “over-qualified” either (my stats cower in front of OP’s {btw i applaud your work ethic and commitment to achieving} but are still pretty decent)

i’m from a low income family AND i applied for the dual-degree program for which i was not selected as a finalist. i sent the ad-office an email requesting information on how i could sched. an interview but they didn’t reply until after the interview deadline =. i visited the school’s booth when they visited our hs for a college fair (but in retrospect i realize i should have given my name to the alum)

but i didn’t visit the campus since i’m from NY. waitlisted - decent stats, respectable essay, moderate display of interest. waitlisted.

i did apply to HYPS and would choose any of them over WashU but i had written them off as rejections back in january after seeing the colossal increase in applicants this year.

i guess i wasn’t the right fit. and uchi agreed with them. what can you do huh? i’m hoping for the best for both of us.

It seems a shame that a school this good doesn’t do more to let the applicant express exactly what it is about their school that makes him/her want to attend. People here are suggesting that adcoms use statistics (people from this high school tend to…) or assess interest by noting visits, applications for scholarships etc. but why not just ask the applicants? If you look at the Lehigh application (which is another notorious safety school) they come right out and demand the applicant to address their interest in the school. They ask a series of questions about what the applicant has done to demonstrate interest and then they have essay questions that force the issue. When I saw it and tried to apply I realized that, short of lying, there was no way I could apply without it being obvious that Lehigh was a safety school. I didn’t even apply. I’m sure the Lehigh people are grateful. Adcoms at WUSTL could be more open with their application questions and trust that direct answers will indicate real interest. There are waitlisters who would have crawled on their hands and knees to attend and there are type A (applied for every scholarship etc) admitted applicants who could care less. A more detailed and specific application would help…

At this point I can’t lose but thought I’d throw in another two cents worth.

You deserve to be waitlisted. At least they think that you’re too good to be rejected. =)
But I think you will end up going to a “better” place.

I just got a likely from Duke!
So take that WashU! Haha sorry, I just had to say that :)

Congrats, HYPSMIT!

Thanks  10 char

Dang that must feel good. Hi DUKE! Are ya reading this board? Fess up!
Congrats HYP.

Good for you, HYPSMIT!!

Thank you guys so much! You guys have always been so supportive :)

^ with your stats it should be the first of many.

Was it really the fact that you wanted to get into Wash U that made you upset, or was it because you thought you were better than Wash U and them wait listing you would insult you? You should never take one person’s opinion of yourself to heart, if you start getting rejected everywhere, you may have a problem, but as of now that clearly isn’t going to happen. Don’t have angst about WUSTL, just be happy you got a likely from Duke. Yeah.

my advice to you… suck less

Hey guys, I know that this is really old, but I just wanted to let all of you know I’m headed off to Princeton! I know that some of you expressed interest in knowing where I ended up, so there you go :)

Thanks for letting us know! Good luck to you. My son decided on the University of Texas, where he’ll study Biochemical Engineering.

Hi there. Add me to the list of “Where are you going instead?”. I’m Fencing Division I at The Ohio State University, which is an opportunity of a lifetime.

Bottom line: college admissions are REALLY weird this year (2010). My friend who’s ranked #1 in our class who’s also a genius and extremely well-qualified got waitlisted and rejected whereas I, not nearly as qualified, got accepted. It may be because you turne in your app kinda late (for best chances, you wanna turn them in at least a month prior to the deadline). But I turned mine in only a few weeks earlier, so idk what’s going on. But relax, with your talent, you’ll surely excel at some school
