do colleges see the sub scores? cause for the writing part i aced the paragraph revision part, i scored very well on the essay but i got 50% of the identifying sentence error problems…

I think they only see the subscore like MC and essay.

I think you guys are underestimating his chances. I mean, he got double 800’s on SAT I math and the IICs. Genious! Congrats on that, man. He’s in the top 4% of his class AND he still finds time to play tennis and volunteer and work. I say you have a GREAT chance at all your schools. In fact, he should try his luck at some of the UK schools, like Oxford and Cambridge.

unfortunately, lots of harvard apps have 4000 SATs. a 800 on the IIC is like 90th percentile :\ (they really need to lower the cuvre on it…). harvard gets like 2700 valedictorians a year. scores, in the end, mean almost nothing. essays, extracirriculars, and the recs are what willget in u in.

Also, I’m pretty sure less than 40% of SAT I 1600s are accepted (combined EA/RD), so stats alone won’t distinguish anyone.

yeah i understand that. I definitely feel that its a long shot for the ivys except for maybe cornell, because of the dramatically higher acceptance rate. But, at the same time, I used to be semi confident in being a “match” for schools like Rice and WashU, but as I am seeing the posters and some even being rejected from these schools with much more higher stats, I’m losing my confidence in even those schools. Is college confidential generally a more qualified group of individuals? I certainly hope the participants aren’t neccessarily “average applicants” or else well looks like im out of luck.

the applicants on cc are usually very serious about college so their stats will usually be higher.
if someone with better stats than you is rejected it doesn’t mean that you will be, it could of been their essays, their interview, or their ecs

how significant is location when it comes to colleges? Does it help or hurt coming from Arizona… I posed this question before but i dont think i got an answer. I’ve been told it helps coming from Arizona rather than a state like New york or New jersey where its much more competitive…

i don’t think any ‘average’ overacheiving HSer can call rice or washu a match. doesn’t wash u purposely reject students that they think will get accepted to HYPS so they can keep their yield rates up?

I was told by a harvard ad. officer that once you’ve proven yourself academically good enough for them (i.e. 1450+SAT and 600+ on SATIIs) they pretty much forget about your standardized test scores unless your like 1580+ or 780+ on SAT IIs. That means a 1450 is good enough as a 1550 to them.

any thoughts on the location being beneficial?

i dunno how competetive arizona as a state is…but location is a factor cuz ur usually compared to ur surroundings. although colleges say they don’t use regional quotas…its amazing how similiar their %s from different regions are from year to year. but if arizona is like a wyoming, nebraska, northdakota, or something like that (which i doubt with phoenix there) then u’ll get a boost cuz they want to have at leat 1 person from each state

Look at the Princeton/Columbia Boards. High scorers were left in the dust, while plenty of low scorers did get in. So I guess what I’m trying to say is, you’ll know soon enough if you were aiming too high.

actually an 800 on IIC is 90th percentile in the WHOLE NATION, not just harvard

:)

stop worrying him, i think he has a good chance. plus if he doesnt get into ANY (which i doubt), a lot of rolling admissions schools such as purdue and University of Arizona etc. have deadlines UP TO june (amazing huh?)

aha pjv, I was told by a harvard admissions officer that harvard’s SAT range is “1200 to 1600.” That was when I stopped believing harvard admission’s officers. They want to keep acceptance rates down, and to do that they need to inspire confidence in borderline applicants.

ha i guess ill find out where i stand with competitive colleges in about 21 hours… hopefully i can pull a deferred… which would at least mean that they considered me making me a lot more comfortable and confident

:\ doesn’t harvard defer a lot more than they reject? i think the vast majority of applications are deferred. only the apps that truly don’t show the applicant can do the work are rejected early. right? maybe?

Right, Ariesdrgn.
