But is the computer right?

How many calories for 88 miles, 7000 feet of climbing? That was my ride for the day, and a beautiful ride it was. Mountains, redwoods, beach… I love living here.

cardinal fang…wow. How about 10,000 calories? That sounds about right, lol. Going for one of my "shopping’ rides tomorrow :)

That’s the thing-- it’s not 10,000 calories or anything close to that. If it were, I would be as thin as a willow wand.

How many caloried does a 125-lb person burn while removing moss from a 4000 sq ft lawn with a thatching rake?

Well, did TONS of walking around – errands with mom & sister. It was some nice bonding time and my slacks are getting nice and loose (were tight before I got an awful stomach bug earlier this week and also cut back on snacking). This is GOOD news, since we’re going travelling and I intend to try lots of yummy foods (while also doing a lot of walking on our trip).

I don’t trust any of these exercise calorie counter computers. The one on my heart rate monitor uses weight, heart rate, and time to come up with huge numbers. I don’t even look at 'em The exercise bike gives a different number based on weight and watts and time. The exercise charts, still a different number. The only numbers I care about is the bathroom scale and my pants size.

Well, I added nearly half a mile, stretching my hilly walk out to 2 miles after lunch. Now, it’s great exercise walk. Three steep hills, a quarter mile each, that work just like intervals. The heart rate never completely recovers, progressively increasing on each hill. Then, a nice flat quarter mile to finish up and get back on stride.

If you want to set a nice easy pace out of the gate, don’t let your iPod start playing [Icky Thump by The White Stripes](http://popup.lala.com/popup/360569449466004822) walking down the driveway.

Good going IDad - wished you lived close by, I would just give you my Ipod and let you load up songs for me.

Well, thanks to this group I was able to attend a lovely fundraiser last night and not get off track. I too am tempted by the cheese trays, but I was able to just take a couple of small cubes and stick to the fruit and a lovely canape with smoked salmon. Later at dinner there were lots of really healthy choices so I had no problem.

I am going to leave for a 5 mile walk shortly and return in time to watch the finish of the Masters.

Cardinal Fang, there are on-line calculators that will factor in speed and body weight to give you a good estimate. Your bike computer is way off though - I bet you are at around 5000. Although, at that level of riding, who cares :).

Well, we biked for over two hours today at a fast pace, with a few hills. I’m thinking I burned close to 1,000 calories based on the various calculators I consulted. But hey, even 500 would be good! No worries!

AND, we stopped at Wegmans on the way home to get some halibut. I should resist since it’s so darn expensive but we hardly ever go out to eat anymore so WHY NOT? Very small pieces but I am looking forward to dinner!! (And yeah, we’ll eat it in front of the tv tonight…go Phil!)

You all have me hooked on the exercise part. I usually work out Monday - Friday and not on the weekend. I am proud to say I went to the gym yesterday and rode the bike for an hour. H was very impressed since he didn’t last as long on the rowing machine! Today I walked outside with a friend. Yikes! My knee was screaming at me on the big hills! What’s up with that??? Had to walk on my tippy toes on that leg to relieve the pain. Was ok on the flat terrain but still a little limpy. I do think I am making progress but wonder if the knee will ever be the same again. The eating part is better but still a work in progress!

NorthMinnesota, put ice on that knee. Twenty minutes on, twenty minutes off. For several hours. It will make the swelling go down.

Thanks VeryHappy…I do ice but the swelling has never gone down since the surgery in October! Maybe it never will??? And maybe walking hills will never feel ok. I do get discouraged but at least the bike is ok for me and walking on flat terrain at an average pace is good but when I try to walk briskly I start to limp. I hate getting older! ;)

NM - I would avoid steep hills - as I have said before, you really risk injury. Your knee is just less stable when you place it down on a steep hill. Far better to have a less strenuous workout than to have to take days off to recover.

^^^Thanks wnp! I plan on sticking with the bike for awhile!

Bike Computer on the blink. (it’s Sunday)
Safeway, chocolate coverd, cream filled bismark, and a raspberry danish @59/ea. I couldn’t find my gloves and 47degrees with w/o windchill.

Oh help! I’ve fallen off the exercise wagon and I can’ seem to climb back on. Tomorrow I’ll be going back to the gym. D has a new training program for her sport and I promised to help her. I may start doing the workout with her. It’s been at least 3 weeks since I worked out and boy do I feel it!

I ran tonight for 30 minutes. Then did 100 crunches. My calves feel like rocks right now… I expect to wake up at some point during the night screaming…

Congrats, hops_scout.
I cannot run at all, never could even as a child. However, doing 10 miles whenever weather permits (6.5 rollerblading, 3.5 walking), no pain, I quess, after few years of that, it does not matter any more. So, stick to it, it will get better. I switch to swimming though when pool is open. This one is the best of them all. Then I need only 1 hour / day of exercise, unless I just do not want to get out of the water and continue. I can do about 140 crunches easy, sometime in a summer I might do 2 sets of that outside on my back yard, if I remember.

My stomach gets in the way of crunches! Anyway…hit the gym again today. Yay! Did an hour on the recumbent bike. No weights. Knee is great on bike. Now I need to focus on what goes in my mouth. H went to home opener today so it will be just me all day so I need to stay away from snacking!

You can do it lilmom!
Way to go hops_scout! I will also never run so I admire anyone who can!
