3 mi treadmill run followed by three 1/10 mi intervals (7.5, 8.0, 8.3 mph)

iDad- You seriously need to write for Runner’s World or something! Great write up!

4 miles today. Legs are very tired, needless to say. I checked last year’s race results and I would have easily won the age group- I think 2:19 won it or something and I ran 2:07. Of well.

Gym day. Still doing major push ups (45). I may do kettle balls if I get bored. 20 minutes on the elliptical and later an evening walk (just about a mile nothing major).

Abasket congrats on the 5K!

So Deborah, did you do those intervals at the end or within your 3 miles. Those are FAST!!

Thanks, Abasket. They were after finishing the 3 miles. BB would go miles at rates like that. :)

‘In effect, they would slow ageing.’

The target enzyme, SIRT1, is switched on naturally by calorie restriction and exercise, but it can also be enhanced through activators.

Pretty interesting stuff. It appears that we may have drugs in the future that mimic diet and exercise to prevent all sorts of problems. In the meantime, I guess we can diet and exercise and drink wine. BTW, the drugs that they are playing around with are 100 times more powerful than the stuff in red wine.

8 x 100s at 90% on our high school’s new mondo track. Feels fast. Far cry from cinders and the original rubberized asphalt surfaces that seemed rock hard.

Waterproof

OK, here’s the second batch. To make a jacket waterproof, they start with some kind of nylon/polyester fabric, treat with DWR to make it water repellent like the previous jackets, then laminate or coat the inside of the fabric with something that is truly waterproof. Finally, they tape the seams so water can’t get in through the stitching. The claim – and the higher the price, the bigger the claim – is that these are waterproof (so water from rain can’t get in) and breathable (so that water from sweat can’t get out). In reality, if it’s waterproof, it’s not very breathable. You will boil like a lobster if you are working up a sweat on a warm day. You’ll just boil slower in an expensive jacket.

The two endpoints (for walking, hiking, golf type activities) range from basic rain gear like the Marmot Precip line or the LLBean rain stuff at the affordable end up to GoreTex Pro at the extreme top end.

[Marmot Precip Rain Jacket Review - YouTube](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube)

Light ripstop fabric with a white polyurethane coating on the inside to make it 100% waterproof. They all claim that it’s breathable and, yes, it’s more breathable than a plastic garbage bag or pancho, but it’s not very breathable. That’s just the reality of rain gear on a hot rainy day working up a sweat.

The Marmot jacket and pants were the first two Marmot items I bought. You can find them on sale and they make the pants in short, reg, and long length so they actually fit. Fantastic quality. These have lived at the bottom of my backpack on every hike, even if rain isn’t in the forecast. As a bonus, I’ve used them a lot this winter to throw on over fleece pants and top when it’s snowing or raining sideways. Perfect for shovelling snow. Even if it changes to freezing rain, I’m 100% dry. Also works to completely block the wind.

Here are the Marmot jackets and pants (also available in a full zip version with a zipper running top to bottom along the outside of each leg so you can put them on over muddy boots).

Here are the LLBean versions. I just got one of these for my daughter and it seems to be the same quality:

Everyone makes a version of this stuff, including REI and EMS Lands End and North Face and Columbia and the golf companies. They all use different buzzwords, but it’s all pretty much the same – “PU coated” rain jackets.

I think a good basic rain arsenal is one of the ultra light hoodys I mentioned before to cover a light mist or a day when you might get caught by a sudden shower and a set of this kind of jackets/pants for a day when there’s a good chance it’s really going to let loose on you (or going to kid’s soccer game in the rain, or just for wearing to the grocery store on a day when it is raining sideways!)

The other end of the waterproof scale is a GoreTex Pro rain shell. GoreTex Pro layers the waterproof layer between the outer fabric and in inner fabric liner, then all three are bonded to form one layer of fabric. Yes, it breathes better than a coated rain jacket, but boy do you pay for a little more breathability. A Marmot GoreTex Pro rain shell is $500. An LLBEAN GoreTex Pro rain shell is $350. That’s just for the rain shell. No warmth.

Yes. They are nicer than the Marmot Precip (also slightly heavier and more robust). But, in all honesty, I can’t see paying that much money for a rain jacket that you still don’t want to wear if you can avoid it, unless you have money to burn. I lucked into an irrestible deal at the TJ MAXX. They got in two of the $500 Marmot jackets that they priced at $260. I figured (correctly) that nobody was going to pay $250 for a rain jacket at TJMAXX and eventually grabbed one off the clearance rack for $169. For $169, buy a GoreTex Pro rain jacket. It’s the Mercedes of rain jackets. At $500, I have to pass.

In between those two extremes are a million options under a million names that all claim to be more breathable for more money than the PU-coated jackets or as breathable as GoreTex Pro for less money. Gore even makes some in between models called GoreTex Performance. One product, called Event, probably is even more breathable than GoreTex.

One particularly arcane slice of this continuum is the ultra-light waterrproof jacket. These ultra lightweight fabrics with ultra lightweight waterproof membrane layers and taped seams. Like these:

100% waterproof. Gossamer thin fabrics that will probably rip if you look at them sideways. But, a terrific summer-time rain jacket. 6 ounces, stuffs in it’s own pocket. Basically the same thing as the ultra-light hoody, but completely waterproof. Again, i never considered one because of the price. The Marmot Essence is $190. The Gore PacLite versions are even more expensive. Pretty rich for flimsy little windbreaker that looks like jackets you’d pay $19 for. When I saw the Marmot Essence on the clearance rack at TJMAXX for $59, I ran to the checkout counter with it. It’s definitely going to be my new emergency rain jacket in the bottom of my pack in the summer on nice days and will probably end up being my go to rain jacket to run to the store five or six months a year.

[Marmot Mica Jacket reviewed by Colorado Mountain School Guide Steve Johnson - YouTube](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube)

But again, for $200, you can buy a featherlight water resistant hoody, a 100% waterproof Marmot Precip style jacket, and a pair of 100% waterproof Precip pants – a combo that will cover all your bases.

mathmom-- way to crank out those push ups. Mine are very much a work in progress, when I do them on my toes, I am lucky to get to 10 in a row without taking a breather and recovering.

Supposed to be a rest day, but my visitor wanted to get in a late afternoon walk, so we did about an hour at a pretty brisk pace.

Good God, think of how bad we would look at 150. At least you guys could cover those wrinkles with a beard.

Who the heck wants to live to be 150? Can you imagine how much your bunions would hurt? And trying to remember all those great great great grandchildren’s birthdays?

^Im not sure I want to imagine what my BRAIN would feel like after 150 years. I’m already cranky in the face of stupidity!

A basket, kudos on your 5k!

Idad, thanks so much for such a comprehensive review of activewear. I’ve bookmarked it all under my “idad rcommends” file. (I’m with MOWC in that you should be writing a column!)

Since I’m about halfway to my weight goal, it has occurred to e that I should probably wait a few months before investing in the good stuff. But now that I have a guide, I may be able to find interim versions on eBay.

That’s how I’ve replaced a few of my favorite “fat” suits – searching for the name and style and getting the next size or two down second hand…so that I don’t have to wait til I’m “finished.” McH thinks I’m nuts, (he’s operating on “just tighten your belt” and buy new stuff when you’re done) but for me, it helps me treat the nutrition aspect as an ongoing thing as opposed to a binge diet with a finite deadline. I have a guest room (of sorts, more like a college kid flop house) in the poolhouse with good storage, so I figure what the heck. I’ll just keep collecting sizes until I’m stable, and then purge, donate, or re-ebay ;)

I would not mind to live until 150. Nobody would care about me not sending B-day card at this age. The problem is if you can still move. If not, I rather be underground. It is very hard to sit down and observe, this is not the life for me.

Wanted to mention that I got to go in a Lululemon store this weekend! Wow, I think its MOWC that talks about Lululemon apparel - just WALKING in that store made me want to smile and start exercising - so colorful and great clothing looks! Didn’t buy anything this time cause my daughter’s were already “spending” my money and I had already had a “me” spending spree at an Eddie Bauer Warehouse (even better than the outlet) and a Gap sale.

But hope to stop back sometime!! Any chance anyone has seen Lululemon at TJ Maxx??

Whether you go Lulu or not, I see more races in your future, Abasket. :)

The biggest problem to living to 150 is that your ears and nose never stop growing. Imagine how big they will be when you are that old. :D

Most of this is just hype. The company that is doing the research started almost 10 years ago (I actually made some money on them as they were public for a brief time before getting bought by GSK). They don’t have a lot to show for it at this point.

You can buy pure resveratrol now, it is widely available and not that expensive. Just make sure you get the trans form as that is the one that seems to effective, although resveretrol in general doesn’t seem to do much for healthy people. But doubling people’s life expectancy? That’s a joke.

Core exercises would become even more important to help support the enlarged nostrils and earlobes.

abasket, great job on your 5k! Racing is really fun, isn’t it?

I signed up for a 10k in May. It’s part of my half plan. I’m wondering if I’ll be able to stick with the lhr long enough before I feel the need to speed up for the 10k.

There are a couple of Lulu outlet stores (I have never been in one- probably in Canada) but you almost never see the stuff discounted otherwise. There is a small sale rack in the store and I have occasionally gotten something off of it, but generally I’m attracted to the new colors/styles (of course). The other way they “get” you is that the items sell fast, so generally you can’t plan on waiting a few weeks. I agree about the stores- it is like catnip. I’m a little safer online. There is a store 4 miles from my house…

We were in the mall yesterday, and I stopped in at the Lulu store. I want to go back in when it’s not so busy to try a couple of pairs of tights. I usually only wear workout stuff for exercising, but I was thinking maybe a pair of their pretty black tights would be good for around town as well. Maybe… What is the difference between their regular tights and running tights with regard to how well they work for running?
