Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Me neither! And I REALLY don’t like to be yelled at by some 20 year old chick who weighs 108 lbs…hey, sista, you have three kids with an average birth weight of 10lbs each and tell me how YOUR core holds up…

There is a mom at the high school who is roughly my age who teaches an exercise class…perhaps I’d have a better attitude if I took a class from her.

Sitting on an exercise bike, being yelled at by some young whipper-snapper while being subjected to rap music like a Gitmo torture protocol…

Just shoot me now. I’d rather buy bigger jeans.

Good lord, it’s hard enough to get myself to enjoy exercise. Can you imagine if I trained myself to associate working out with being forced to listen to rap music? It’s like last night when I was working out, my wife had Rachael Maddow on TV. I think that’s probably why my heart rate got so high… I was trying to pedal that exercise bike right out of the house! Lunge walking takes on a whole new dimension. I nearly lunged right at the TV. :)

LOL, I happen to like Rachael Maddow, but I understand your point. On Saturday D had her drill team officer auditions; I was stressed about it so I went to work out. I thought it would be good to jog out the stress but instead my heart rate was sky high! Not a good idea!

What a nice day for my hilly walk to the river. 55 degrees, bright sunshine, blowing about 25 miles an hour. I have really started to acclimate to this walk. The hills get me breathing hard, but don’t hammer me – I’ve learned to slow down the pace a bit on the steep parts, rather than trying to keep the same tempo. Feels good to see progress on a fixed route, even if I have slowed it down by 30 seconds a mile. Peak heart rate of 82% rather than 94% is quite a difference.

^^^^Interesteddad, I took your advice and found a training program for my 5K. It’s not a start with a mile and add distance program, but a run/walk combo. I wasn’t sure that would work for me, since I’ve been doing run/walk combo for years. But I never ran more than 3 minutes straight. Today I was instructed to run 8 minutes/walk for 2 minutes three times. It was hard!!!

I’m now officially signed up for the Austin Pride 5K in June, my first race ever. It coincides with the Lesbian/Gay/Bi/Trans Pride weekend. Well, the run is a sponsored event of the weekend. My D1 is flying in from NC to run it with me, and my D2 will come along and run with. It’s not exactly how I pictured spending a “girls weekend,” but I bet it will be so fun. The 5K is billed as the funnest run around or something to that effect. I’m calling the hotel next to schedule my post race massage, lol.

Ditto, but ours looks 25 and probably weighs 108 lbs., grrr.

Did a cardio boot camp today. Now that really was torture. Discovered I have absolutely no upper body strength. Spinning was a picnic by comparison.

What I really want to find is Latin Impact. They don’t have it at our fitness center . . .

Question - what do you do with the raging appetite that follows exercise???

YK–I would have said the same thing three months ago. I’m lucky because the early morning classes that I take are taught by women who are over 40 and one is 50 (she taught on her birthday and told us her age). Yes, the instructors are in great shape, but all of the instructors and trainers are–that doesn’t bother me. The music they play tends not to be rap–it isn’t always what I’d listen to on my Ipod, but I’ve found that I can tune it out and just focus on the spinning. I haven’t experienced instructors who act like drill sergeants–most of the ones who teach my classes have had a “you-can-do-it” or a “come-on” attitude.

I feel like the benefit I get–having my heart rate up to 85-90% for the better part of an hour and burning more calories than most anything else I do–is worth putting up with some of the music. My 20-year-old D went with me to a spin class when she was home for a few days during her spring break and her view was that the music was “old school”. She said it was a good workout and that she was surprised I could keep up. LOL

I’m never hungry after exercise unless it’s snow skiing or swimming. I would eat if I were hungry, but I’d try to avoid junk. Lean protein with whole grain or fruit, that kind of thing. Lots of people swear by those post-workout shakes.

That’s a tough interval – 4 to 1 work to recover. The best I can do right now on the Airdyne is 1 to 2. One of work, two of recover.

The recovery periods are like mirages in the desert. They look like a relief, but by the time you get there, they are gone!

^^^^^I was sure thinking that today-what a great analogy, ha ha.

I wolfed down a cold leftover salmon patty from Costco with a lot of cold water. It hit the spot but my dog was disappointed - she was counting on the leftovers.

Our spinning instructor is a young gorgeous girl of 20 or so but she’s actually quite nice. And I’m enjoying the rap, it’s not the type with the foul language.

I read somewhere that 14 almonds are the thing to have after exercise. I have no idea why; I’m sure there’s some science in that recommendation. So I come home from the gym, eat my 14 almonds, and then make dinner.

Just like Nrdsb4, I’m never hungry after weights/running, but I will wolf down any food after skiing. When I get home from work, I feel tired and hungry, but after my regular run my appetite and hunger are gone yet I feel more energetic! Go figure :)

I read somewhere that swimming (and I imagine skiing) because they get you cold are apt to make you hungry. I’ve never found that exercise made me more or less hungry that I could tell.

I know I shouldn’t make such a big deal out of this, but I was at a Cubs game today and when I went to buy a drink, I was carded! Of course, I did see the sign in front of me that says they card anyone who looks 35 or younger. So I know they didn’t think I was under 21 (or 25), but even, to think I looked under 35??? I expressed my deepest gratitude to the person in the concession booth.

One thing I do notice that I’ve never noticed before after starting an weight regime is how much less tension I’m carrying around in my shoulders/scapula area, and how I feel my posture is so much better. Maybe the good posture is what made me look young today.

Hauled my behind to the gym again today. Yay! The gym was very humid! A little rain outside but gosh the gym was steaming! Made the workout hard and I was dripping 15 minutes in. Dropped a few more pounds so happy with that. Had a delicious dinner of mahi mahi on the grill, roasted broccoli and cauliflower, and fresh berries. It was satisfying and I really enjoyed it! :)

I had an uneventful iPod nazi superset and intervals on the bike after dinner. I’ve gotta stop with this after dinner stuff. It’s really not my optimum time. Nevertheless, I felt pretty strong again.

Altitude. Ugh. 5500 ft here in Prescott, AZ where I am visiting. My HR was about 8 beats higher than usual on the elliptical. That and my PT exercises was all I could do. Lots of walking around Sedona, though. Also too much eating and drinking with friends. I’m still fitting in the clothes, but sure need to get back to running. Aqua-jogging isn’t going to work here in AZ because the pool at the clubhouse (outdoor pool isn’t open yet) is small and not deep enough.

MomofWildChild,

Lucky you. Prescott is insanely beautiful.
