Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Thank you, kmc.

No worries.
Here’s a link that better explains the weight fluctuation/intense workout relationship – hope it helps anyone whose feeling a little impatient
[Why the Scale Goes Up When You Start a New Workout Plan | SparkPeople](http://www.sparkpeople.com/blog/blog.asp?post=why_the_scale_goes_up_when_you_start_a_new_workout_plan)

Target + 21.6; actually went up 0.4 lb from two days ago with full insanity workout plus additional running.

One thing I know is that I did all the right thing for food intakes. Several small snacks alone the day to keep my metabolism going. Never feel starve.

SO, I don’t know.

Kmcmom13. Thank you for trying to help. PG and I go back at least 5 years. Many times in very broad range of topics, PG likes to lecture people - as if others don’t know no nothing.

I have no problem with the message but was very irratated by the tone of delivery. Most of the people on this forunm share what do they do and believe. Few would say “don’t do this and do what I do”. Rather, most will say “this is what I do and why” or I saw this article and they said this is how it should be done.

1.3 miles yesterday, pushups, upper abs, obliques, stretching.

My knee felt great yesterday. Then late last night I went up a flight of stairs and landed on the bad knee (this is what I usually do - land on the top stair on my left leg) and it felt like it hyperextended. And it was back to feeling painful though it isn’t bad right now.

This feels like a sprain. This is exactly what has happened with ankle and wrist sprains in the past. Your body heals and then you do something and it gets injured again. So this morning I took the elevator up. I will take the stairs down but the elevator going up. I will also land on my right knee at the top of stairs now.

It usually takes me six weeks to fully recover from a sprain. So this one could take a while.

Oh no, BCE! Our best attempts and then… I hope it is minor and not as bad as you fear.

I feel tired and have a 10 mile race in the morning- on big hills. Fortunately, the awful heat broke and it should be better even by tomorrow morning. It will still be warm, but less humid and probably 65 at the start instead of 77 like the last few mornings.

I won’t be running my summer 5K if this is still a problem then. I will go to the race but I’ll just be at the stop/finish doing support (watching stuff for others). I’ve been through this with sprained ankles twice and a sprained wrist once. It is a pain but I just have to be a lot more careful in what I do. I can still run on the treadmills and I can still do most of my strength-training. I’ve had so much practice at recovering from low-grade injuries that it doesn’t really stress me out anymore.

My feeling is that putting my leg in a cast for a week would probably fix it. I may look at getting a more rigid knee brace (hinged style). I’d only need it going up stairs.

I would just like to say that a few weeks ago, I finally cleaned all the crap out of my diet, including alcohol, and have been exercising every day. I made several kick a$s playlists to work out to, and now I look forward to it. I just got back from a wonderful workout, took a shower, and am flooded with endorphins. It beats a glass of wine glow out by a mile.

Welcome to Nrdsb4’s happy world. :)

I’m sure life will catch up with me later today, but go with me for a minute. :D

Sounds like the wonderful conclusion to the execution of a plan.

I feel that I need to workout everyday too. Taking a day off means that it’s a little easier to take the following day off.

Fell off the wagon today with the eating- and fell hard. Found donuts in 3 different locations at my workplace and was lured by two of them. They were GOOD. I found myself thinking “What Would MiamiDAP Do?” (WWMD) I shoveled one glazed and then 15 minutes later 1 jelly down my throat. Consider it carbo-loading for the 10 mile race!

We do the best we can.

In an interesting twist, speaking of the fast kids…WildChild appears to have a new girlfriend who runs almost as fast as he does (and he’s fast). She ran for Duke and is now a triathlete on his same team. Works well since they both have to go to bed early and get up early to train and her idea of a good date is a 5am 2 hour bike ride! (she’s a med student in Phila) I hope his ego can handle her speed!

Oh no, BC. Months of great exercise and then you hurt yourself walking up the stairs. I just about rolled my ankle yesterday, walking across the living room!

Heal up fast!

^^^^I can trip over air on the floor. I used to be famous for it at my hospital.

Lunch Time break here.

My work place sends out injury report when they happen. So many people got hurt from doing simple tasks. That made me develop a hobbit of doing 10 minutes of stretching every morning as I get off bed. This practice has served me well so far.

I try to avoid a day off too, but sometimes I feel I need a day of rest like this past Wed. I’m also finding I need a nap sometimes during the week (1/2 hour lunch) and maybe a longer snooze on the weekend.

2 mile lhr workout, aka walking, then some planks and my calf workout.

With my new food tracking, I’m finding that I am still low on potassium so I’m making a conscious effort to add different foods to my diet. I had a tomato and a banana for breakfast. This just cannot compete with donuts.

My D is scheduled to run her first marathon next week. ( i thought it was in July, so I have missed out of weeks of worrying!)
She has run several 1/2 marathons, but they were mainly on trails.
This is the Rock & Roll marathon & is on roads/ freeway. She wears “barefoot” running shoes.
She has bone density issues at 23 - not sure of numbers, but she has osteopenia at minimum per Dexa scan)
Since I have osteoarthritis & just had a total knee replacement @ 55, I am naturally concerned about impact to her bones. ( I wasn’t really a runner, although I was in track in jr & sr high- fairly active though)
Am I worrying too much?
I suppose one race can’t do too much damage, can it?

5.4 mi treadmill run

BC, I hope the knee heals quickly.

MOWC, good luck tomorrow. Sounds like WC has met his match! :)

Nrd, I’d take the endorphins as a win, too. I don’t have an iPod or iPhone on me when I’m working out, but I know some others do. Any favorite workout tunes you would like to recommend?

What are the symptoms of the low bone density? Why would anybody be concerned in her 20s? I just want to know how it all come out. I never had a test and not planning on it. I measure my height and when I happened to fall really hard on a very hard surface moving very fast (I mean to the point that I stopped rollerblading alltogether), I did not break any bones, although, I landed right on my unprotected elbow. I have decided that this was good enough test for me.
Docs did not insist on any tests so far, I way pass the age when you can start worrying.

EmeraldK- I’m sure she’ll be fine. She does plenty of running. I would worry more about the crowds at the Rock&Roll races. They are my least favorite. Competitor Group, the for-profit group that puts them on, is not popular with many runners. The races tend to be more of a parade.

I’ll let someone else respond to my Toledo friend about bone density.

“…flooded with endorphins” -
Ahhh… Happy people! YouTube

BC, take care of that knee! I wrecked mine in a similar way - jumped off the retaining wall in the garden. It took a while for it to get back to normal. I highly recommend Aspercreme (sp?) for topical pain and inflammation relief.

MOfWC, have a fun run! I had an interesting dream last night - I was running on a beautiful paved trail and met you. We ended up finishing our run together and chatted about J Crew clothes while we ran. Lol!!
