Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Thanks, MOWC. I wanted to get time in on the bike and accomplished that, and I also wanted to do a lot of the stuff I normally do in my home workout. Some of that I skipped because it’s more comfortable at home (eg hip bridges, clam, leg adduction, stability ball deadbug, stability ball hamstring curls, stability ball pass, superman). That’s probably why I decided to add a mile of running, lol. Might do a few of those other exercises here later on today.

Blank, those are long intervals with short rests in between!

Deborah! Unbelievable workout! Looks like you’ll be ready for crossfit next ;)

Got up at 4:45 am to do a bike ride with H from 5 - 7 am. Will do something this evening, but not sure if will be running, hot yoga, or strength.

Signed up for another round of burlesque dance plus a “yoga for pole” class that meets immediately afterwards, and also signed up to take private swim lessons – I can swim, but would like to be stronger / better. And I’m finding movement fun. This is insane!!

Not to be confused with the Insanity workouts…

^^^Yes–walked before getting on the first flight.

Bromfield, how do you feel about doing workouts at home? I really do prefer it for some exercises. I feel I can get in a pretty good workout in about 30 mins. We don’t have much equipment here – some space, a few dbs, Bodylastics, and a stability ball. I hardly use any of the Bodylastics even, but they are handy for some stuff. You’d probably make more use of them. My husband uses more of them.

I need to buy weights for the Chalean Extreme that I’ll be starting in the fall sometime. I need to get (I think) 5, 8, 10, 12, 15, and 20. I ran by Target and was horrified how expensive it was - over $100! Ideas on how to get cheaply? (aside from stuffing them one at a time in my bra when I leave my fitness center …)

Climbed Mt Saint Helens yesterday. What a crappy hike. I had no idea what to expect, but I thought it would be fairly easy. Round trip a bit less than 10 miles, elevation gain 4660 feet or so. First two miles really easy, nice trail, and eventually 3700 ft elevation gain in the last 2.7 miles. Still doesn’t sound that bad, except for most of that is crawling over steep piles of rock (sometimes unstable, sometimes on hands and knees), trying to find a trail. Last part is a very steep long slog to the top on loose, gravelly rock, at elevation the tops out over 8300 feet.

Don’t think it helped that it was really hot, and we started out late in the day (heat, altitude and black flies are not good). But the positive is, when we got down, that cold beer tasted awesome! I don’t recommend that anyone waste their time with this hike, there are so many beautiful challenging hikes around here that you don’t have to spend hours scrambling over rocks on, trying not to tumble. The view of the crater just isn’t worth it.

This sounds like some of idads scrambles!

I have been walking 20 flights of stairs at work every day. I break it up throughout the day but make sure I get 20 in,

Todays workout was warm up, ramp exercises, upper and lower power exercises, db incline, lunges, pull ups, deadlifts, squat to press and finished with kettlebell swings.

I wonder if iDad saw this news.

busdriver- The only good part of that is the beer! I bet that tasted good!

We are having the oddest weather pattern (all summer has been different, really) and it is storming on and off and humid. Has been this way all week and will continue. There is a lot of flooding in parts of the area, but not where I am. I ran 3.4 miles after work and got rained on a little, but mainly it just felt like a swamp.

4 miles walking and 15 flights of stairs so far today. 1053 calories. Triceps a bit sore from weights this week. Icing and Aleve for the aches and pains. Dreaming of my fall vacations!

Good job with the tracking and consistent effort, NM. I know you’ll see results and be ready for your walking tour of London and Paris! D arrived home for a quick visit before work starts for her in a week. Hopefully we’ll get some exercise in.

Normally a run day today, but was at a pool so allowed myself to change it up with 25 laps and then a 2 mile fast walk tonight. Two things - the swimming felt great for a change! The walking was nice, but man, the mile-o-meter goes much slower when you are walking!!!

You are right, MOWC, the beer was the only good thing about that hike. But I’ll bet it would have tasted even better if I ran a marathon, that would have been much harder! We have a friend who runs 100 milers, and I cannot imagine how good a beer would taste after that. I think his legs may be destroyed by now, though.

“NM. I know you’ll see results and be ready for your walking tour of London and Paris!”

Wow. How incredibly fun. I think that would be an awesome way to reach a goal. Set yourself up for an amazing trip, and then use that as motivation to exercise like crazy. Now that would really pump things up.

busdriver:

Wow. Awesome Hike. I’d never do ten miles with 4700 feet of elevation gain… I bet you were ready to be back at the car!

WalMart’s gray hex “prison dumbbells” are by far the best buy. About a dollar a pound and no shipping. If they don’t have your sizes in stock, you can do a free “ship to store” order online.

[Cap Barbell Cast Iron Dumbbell - Walmart.com](http://www.walmart.com/ip/Cap-Barbell-Cast-Iron-Dumbbell/11099738)

They also have really nice ones with rubber coating and shaped ergonomic handles:

Also, you should price out what you need and see if one of these adjustable sets makes sense:

For $115, you get a pair of DBs that can adjust anywhere from 5 pounds to 25 pounds, in 2.5 pound increments… This is great option if you don’t want to take up a lot of space. Probably not quite as nice to use for some things as a rack of individual DBs, but definitely a good way to go for a home gym.

Back to the basement.

TRX pushup (with hold at the bottom)

Played 9 holes of golf tonight. Didn’t play great, but I’m getting better!

My grocery store still has lobsters for $3.99 a pound. It’s a summer tradition. Supply is up. They are molting, so they have soft shells. None of which makes eating them any less enjoyable. Still, variety is the spice of life, so I went with fresh N. Atlantic cod fillets yesterday.

Maybe lobster next week, although it’s looking like a weather window for another camping/hiking outing. If I can get a reservation at the campground. Second time should be a little easier. I’m pretty well organized with some fine tuning after the first trip. Like, now I know how to set up the tent, know how to set up the tarp, know how to use the stove, etc.

Thanks for the tips, interesteddad.
