Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I’m back in restart mode after recovering from a nasty cold. This upcoming half marathon is officially cursed.

deb2, have you seen a good sports doctor for your knees? I had terrible knee problems when I first started running so I empathize with your pain!

Bromfield, I’m sorry you’re going through this ankle stuff again. It’s so frustrating when things like this crop up.

eddieo, great results! (and nice boa from kmcmom too!)

Argh - two weeks in a row I’ve been up in weight - NOT happy, though on the non-scale victories I bought a pair of skinny jeans in a small size, fit back into a size 6 leather skirt, and I think I’m looking pretty good - so I’ve got to stop focusing on the stupid number.

But haven’t been able to do CorePower Yoga all week, and feeling the effects. As it turned out, my bike-crash didn’t affect running at all, but my right elbow is torn up and scabbed and I’m kind of afraid to do some of the moves where you support yourself with your elbows, or even basic chatarunga pose.

Saw a groupon offer for Cross Fit – 10 sessions for $29 … has anyone done this?

Thank you so much for all the info on fish oil. Maybe ill consult with a doc at some point but don’t see any immediate need to supplement - though if it does improve memory I could sure use that!

You people rock with your generosity in answering questions. :)

Beautiful day out there here in Ohio . Charlie (my dog) had his perky walk on this morning - he loves the coolness!!!

14 miles on the Perkiomen Trail. 52-62 degrees with a lot of shade. I wore long sleeves. That was different! Wire the water belt and had a Huma gel at mile 7. Glad that’s done.

I take Vit D and calcium. I try to be good about it. I’m not always…

Deb, I’m sorry to hear you’ve been having achy knees. Are those NB 860s stability shoes? Have you at some point along the way been into a running store and had them watch your gait to help you determine which type of shoes would be the best match? Wondering if neutral vs stability would make a difference.

When I looked up the shoe I wasn’t clear if it’s designed for walking, running, or both, or whether there are different versions with a similar number.

Last day of my mini-vacation… :frowning: :)

I take Vit D daily (have not been doing it for the past week since there is plenty of sun around here), iron (since Im borderline anemic and do not eat meat daily), and sometimes magnesium to balance my electrolytes after runs. The rest comes from nutrition.

Deb, I highly recommend seeing a PT who specializes in runners’ problems. It is likely that some of the muscles that support your knees are weaker than others. A good PT can show you a few exercises that, when done regularly, can strengthen the right muscles. Quite a few beginner runners have weak glutes, and glutes are supposed to be engaged when one is running. Also, there is nothing wrong with using Aspercreme or BioFreeze (for folks who can’t have aspirin and the like).

That sounds like a nice run, MOWC. 4 miles this morning.

No supplements here. I used to take a multivitamin, but ran out and didn’t think about buying more.

abasket, Sabadog is also enjoying the cooler weather!

“fit back into a size 6 leather skirt…”

Very cool!

MOfWC, nice run! Long sleeves - wow, soon I will be thinking about them, too. Time to do some more lulu shopping! Saw their runsies on sale at the store right before leaving, but was not tempted. :D

It’s a one-day certification (and a check) to become a CrossFit gym “coach”, so the quality varies widely. There is no quality control. In general, it’s very high intensity interval training using some questionable exercise choices. For example, horrible form chinups (swinging the body to do more reps), Olympic barbell lifts to exhaustion (when the best Olympic lifters in the world would never do more than 5 reps in a set). The result is a high injury rate.

The idea is to do a nationally published workout of the day (“WOD”) in a group class setting.

Here is Wednesday’s Crossfit WOD:

66 Deadlifts, 110 pounds
66 Box jump, 24 inch box
66 Kettlebell swings, 24 kg kettlebell
66 Knees to elbows
66 Sit-ups
66 Pull-ups
66 Thrusters, 55 pounds
66 Wall ball shots, 20 pound ball
66 Burpees
66 Double-unders

Deadlifts, box jumps, and pull ups are all crazy exercises to do high reps like that as fast as posslble at a point of exhaustion. Recipe for lumbar disk ruptures, hammered shins, and shoulder problems.

Grabbing a sunny weather window and sneaking off for two nights of camping/hiking this week. The temps are falling, but it’s an opportunity to check out some of the tent sites. I’ve got the one from the cover of the brochure for the campground lined up, right on the brook:

[Brookside camping](<a href=“Lost River Valley Campground: Family Camping in the White Mountains of New Hampshire”>http://lostriver.com/images/swf/image6.jpg)

Haven’t picked out my hikes yet. Probably have to pack some PowerStretch fleece!

For those who have gone a “Color Run” - I just found out that there will be one near here in October. I am a little tempted because I don’t have any races on the calendar and I think I’m pretty good for a 5K (D wants me to do a 10K but that’s another story).

So, what exactly is a “Color Run”? If you have done one, would you recommend it?

There are people who are REALLY into Crossfit. It’s never appealed to me, and I do suspect that some of the instructors aren’t that great. It’s a good workout.

I really didn’t want to do my run. Being here in PA with the whole hospice situation is pretty draining. I convinced myself to START, and then figured anything was better than nothing. If I could make it 4 miles down the path, then I had to get back so it would be 8. I managed to get myself 7 miles out, which was the goal. So, yeah, sometimes it’s just about starting!

MOWC:

You probably needed to get outside and run, more than just for the exercise. That whole scene has got to be mentally draining…

For MOWC

We managed to survive our hike to the Enchantment Lakes. Missed the turnoff the first day (have no idea how we did that), so we just did a practice hike to Stuart Lake, about 9 miles, not much elevation gain. The next day we did the big hike, about 14 miles, up Aasgard Pass to the upper Enchantments. Just beautiful, but that 2300 ft elevation gain in a mile was tough (though not as hard as St Helens), total gain 4400. A lot of scrambling.

What amazed me, was seeing people starting up the pass with no chance of getting there before dark, some in TENNIS SHOES and some without poles. Just crazy. They were all young people, of course. The bulk of hikers we saw were in their fifties and sixties, fit, well prepared. Even saw some guys in their seventies, no doubt kicking butt on the youngsters who were ill prepared. I love it that so many older people are in shape like this out here.

Prayers for you and your family MOWC as you head in the direction of hospice.

Amelie, there have been a few color runs here this summer - I did not do one, but my understanding is that they are more “fun runs” - not timed and not really competitive - which is fine and wanted you to know or look into that. Sounds like there are times you will stop for some moments on the run and people tend to stall out n some areas making it a little harder to run at a steady pace. But many love them!!

I think PizzaGirl has done the Color Run. Maybe she will weigh in.

I hope the running helped take your mind of things, MOWC. Praying for a peaceful transition for your mother and some peace for you and your family. Really wishing NM were here to say exactly the right thing.

It is very tough having someone you love in a hospice situation. But I thank God that there are people willing to do that job, they are truly angels, knowing how to give comfort with compassion.

MOWC - I cannot imagine how draining this is. Hugs.

On a much less important note – Amesie - I have done 3 Color Runs and have two more planned in the next couple of weeks. I think they are well run, I like the excitement of being in a good sized crowd, and because the emphasis is fun, it was not intimidating to me.

I found the color part motivating not because I particularly care about having color thrown on me, but because I could say to myself - ok, make it to the green; ok, make it to the yellow; ok, make it to the pink - and that helped me think of it in “chewable” pieces.

I did all these runs by myself since I’m solitary, but lots of people do do them in groups.

I never really stayed for the parties afterwards, though.

Overall I find them fun and energizing, but that’s me. Other people’s mileage (ha ha) may vary.

No real workout for me today. Spent 10 hours at work today after only getting 4 hours of sleep early this morning…
