Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I hear you pack mom!

My weight is doing pretty much the same thing but I haven’t been nearly as disciplined as you, PackMom (birthday cinnamon rolls come to mind). However, my monthly measurements continue to drop, so to me that’s a sign that something’s going right.

This is why I just don’t bother with the scale…you will be a slave to it ! I rely on how I feel, how I look - if you are already exercising and eating fairly well, why not be satisfied by that instead of being stressed out by a number???

I might jump on once a month or so but I mentally, I just don’t want to play that game.

A pound swing on the scales is nothing. I’ve been weight stable for a year now and I see a constant ebb and flow of 2 to 3 pounds on the scale, sometimes within a couple of days. And it has almost no correlation to what I’ve eaten or how I’ve exercised.

I say “almost” because I do think it tends to go up when I have a pound container of nuts in the house! Even that, I think is largely due to the salt.

I think the hardest thing about approaching maintenance weight is the fact that the scale can’t continue dropping steadily enough to mask the normal swings.

I still weigh daily. It helps me stay focused on good decisions in the grocery store. But, tracking my weight now clearly shows that it swings up and down.

3.1 mi treadmill run

Good luck to racers and/or event participants this weekend!

idad, I weigh everyday too. I still have a (prob. irrational) fear that extra pounds will creep up on me if I don’t keep an eye on it. Like you, my weight has been relatively stable for two years (after 50 lb. loss) but will jump up and down a couple of pounds for no apparent reason. I’d like to drop a couple but wonder if my increased workouts (more muscle) are the cause, in which case I’m OK with it.

I am the same way with weighing - I am afraid to stop! Or to stop tracking! I can handle the two to three pound swings, as long as the return to the downward side.

Went to Costco, purchased the usual. Some type of kale mix salad that I intend to make my own dressing for was a new addition to the basket. For a treat, some new popcorn that is “Biggest Loser Approved”. I’m sure it’s not good for me but at 40 calories a cup it won’t be a diet buster compared to cheese and crackers, say.

Best of luck to all racers and just plain ole exercises this weekend!!!

Hoping to finish out my runKeeper goals for September - gotta complete it by Monday night!!!

Yeah, I just bought another can of coconut milk and some snow peas. I’m going to use it with grilled boneless chicken breast as a quickie leftover meal this weekend. I’m pretty sure that most Thai restaurants make their curries exactly the same way – some canned curry paste stirred into coconut milk. Officially, a lot of curries will call for some palm sugar (similar to light brown sugar), but I haven’t missed it.

Well I finally determined for sure that I am a stress eater. Very bad week at work had to terminate 2 employees and it seems clear I will be called on to fire 2 next week. Took a toll on both my exercise and eating. My sleeping was not much better.

Tom1944, H has been in that position before. I don’t envy you. Try and take care of yourself this weekend. It’s no fun. H and his brother both find books on tape or podcasts help with turning the thoughts off so they can get to sleep.

Hang in there, Tom. Exercise might be just the thing to relieve a little stress and sleep a little better.

Back to the basement for an ol’ friend. Burpee fusion time. Might have to go watch the Svetlana burpee fusion video to make sure I’ve got the hip hinge on the KB swings right…

Each set:

12 swings
6 burpees
12 swings
6 burpees
12 swings
6 burpees

Starting a new exercise every minute on the minute for six minutes. Recover to heart rate falls to 60%, then start another set. Total of three sets.
A year ago, I got 1:15 rest after the first set. 1:05 after the second set. and 2:29 after the third set. Today, I got 0:29 to recover my heart rate after the first set. 0:42 after the second, and 1:18 after the third.

And, I’ve increased the weight from 35 lbs to a 50lb kettlebell, which definitely makes for a harder workout.

-

Sorry for all your stress, tom. I too am a stress eater. So I know the feeling.

Tom, you have my sympathies. You’ll find though, that now that you have the habits its not only easier to get back on the wagon, it will also make you feel better :)

I used to have a job any moons ago where I regularly had to fire and hire a lot. It sucks. But remember that whether you know it or not, you could be freeing someone to do something more satisfying in their lives. People who love their work tend not to underperform, in my experience. So you’re just stuck with having to make formal the disengagement that has already been in the space, if you know what I mean. It can be cathartic for the person.

At any rate, sending you the light.

I have discovered a new leisure activity that is approximately neutral in terms of calories. Walk briskly while looking at public artworks for an hour, then have a milk stout…walk briskly for another hour…then stop for another milk stout…rinse and repeat until the cows come home! Yes, it’s Artprize time in my fair city and there are a lot of exhibit areas – and microbreweries – to cover :)

Time for another 5 pound party! I have lost 12.2 pounds now. Yippee! My clothes are feeling different, baggy.
Going to Weight Watchers, counting points, walking. Changing up the walking - it get’s boring just to walk around the neighborhood all the time. Hubby and I have walked along a river, in two different community parks, in a city park at night, and today we will walk a trail in a nearby battlefield.
I am feeling in control (right now).

Great Eddie! Ido that all the time- get in the car and drive to another neighborhood or suburb or park to walk/run. I get real tired of my neighborhood and all the frequent block crossings!!!

Good job eddie! I have to bestow you with a light up accessory, my personal favorite, the light up mohawk.

[Rainbow Mohawk Spirit Wig with LED Lights](<a href=“Rainbow Mohawk Spirit Wig with LED Lights”>Rainbow Mohawk Spirit Wig with LED Lights)

Lol! I love it, blankmind. It goes perfectly with my red light up boa! Thank you.

Great work, eddie! I love the five pound parties.

Tom, I can totally relate to the stress/binge eating. I currently have a job which was in theory supposed to reduce my stress level. My family alleges I have substituted exercise for eating now. I’m okay with that. I do find that pushing myself on the exercise front allows me to push those unpleasant thoughts out of the way - I’m only thinking about getting through that next mile, or next five minutes, or next set of reps, whatever. Lapses will happen, it’s not the end of the world and remind yourself that all is not lost. Just pick up where you left off.

abasket, I’ve no doubt you’ll meet your September goal. Just did a short 3+ miles today. Schedule calls for 11 tomorrow. We shall see. That one might be a combo run/walk.

Sounds like you’re doing great, Eddie. :)
Sabaray, I’m a big fan of healthy outlets – exercise, art, music.
Tom, how about a trip to the batting cages?
Kmc, good point. Tom, in some of these cases maybe you’re helping someone transition to a better space, albeit probably not the way either of you’d prefer, but the way it is.
