Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Yay pizzagirl. Congratulations on the successful run! I’m not sure what mechanism the Polar is using to measure distance. If it’s a footpod that attaches to your shoe, you might have to calibrate it to your stride length. I have one with a Nike/iPod monitor that was amazinging accurate out of the box for walking. I don’t know about running. Even GPS varies by dozens of feet I get different tracks going and coming on a long hike and, when I stop, the GPS thinks I’m darting around like a water bug as it gets slightly different locations with each check of the satellites.

Lizardly:

Good for you on the bike. I had the same experience with my old Fuji road bike. That position didn’t seem to be as tolerable as it was when I was in my 20s. Funny how that works.

PG, congratulations on the newly wired 45 trips around the baseball diamond with a splash of color. :)

Lizardly, have fun with the cruiser bike!

I bought the one in your post, idad (last link) - monitor around the chest, then the iphone app measures heart rate, distance, etc. So I assume it’s the GPS in my phone. Nothing attached to a shoe. Thank you again!

Oh, yeah. Now I remember! Polar strap sending data to the iPhone. Yeah, that would definitely be using the phone GPS (and/or triangulation to cell towers) for distance. Pretty cool stuff… I’m still amazed that I can use a cellphone for an alarm clock when I’m camping! :)

I have a polar heart monitor that I use in conjunction with my iPhone and map my run. I hate to say but the distance is wildly inaccurate. I have 2 routes I run regularly and the distance measured is different every time. For instance, I was on a bike path the other day and ran out 1.5 miles, turned around to my starting point and it was 2.85 miles. No idea. The other day it said I ran 5:30 minute miles (I wish lol!), oh and I burned the same 210 calories in running my 3 miles!

I find map my run good to keep me honest as far as when I am exercising but it’s not that accurate. H has a Garmin which does a better job with distances but I didn’t want to spend the money.

I use my cellphone for an alarm clock every day! ;)

Mapmyrun is very inaccurate as phone gps but is good after the fact- or before a run- to plan a route or figure out distance of where you went.

Gluttony and sloth for the win!

All set to change into workout clothes and head to the basement when I realized I couldn’t keep my eyes open and ended up next to the kitty on the bed for a long Saturday afternoon nap.

Then, topped it off with a big skillet of my Chicken Fajitas (Hold the Tortilla). A complete loss for the diet and fitness effort! :)

I’m thinking there may be another possibly more applicable word. Recovery.

Race tee fits, yay. Bib, hm, not 666, but notable in its own right.

Exercise did not win here either…DH and I were planning to do a walk around the town across the river just before a showing of the British award-winning adverts & PSA’s there (great fun, by the way). It rained. It’s still raining. :(

I’m going to do a few stretches & dumbbell things before bed, but that’s it.

Love catching up on everyone’s activities!

2 mile run in ridiculous humidity for October this morning before heading out of town for a college visit for D2. Busy weekend and crappy outside weather - suppose to rain the next couple of days.

Also have to confess…we stopped in at a friend’s BBQ. Ate pretty well except for the table (no exaggeration) of chips of all kinds. Potato, corn, pita, cheetos, etc. etc. We NEVER get this stuff so of course we had to try everything! :D

At least we avoided the dessert table. Desserts don’t go so well with beer.

I don’t know, it must have been something in the air. I ate movie theatre candy yesterday.

I dd spend the day painting first, and finished with a swim, so I’ll count THAT as exercise, after a fashion.

It must be biological from our cave days…just getting ready to hunker down for winter :)

Ran 1 mile (at my continued slow pace), took 1/2 hour swimming lesson which was basically all laps, now off to yoga. H threatens me with having to rake leaves, says it’s “good for the upper body.” Doesn’t he know this sculpted bod is just for decoration? Ha ha!

Another do nothing here on Saturday. I simply didn’t feel like it. However, today I am just back from a 6.2 mile run. Starting to think that may be my optimal distance. Start of a new week, back to religiously tracking calories and exercise. You all may need to remind me of that.

My “exercise” for the day yesterday consisted of moving some fitness equipment around and vacuuming underneath…

Yay Pizzagirl! Great job on your run, and kudos to you for sticking with your routine today.

Watched idad’s hike report - so pretty! I wasted my Saturday on yardwork and errands: pulled weeds, cleared my veggie garden (but left the bell peppers standing, because they are still so lush and green), and went shopping for necessities. By 11 pm I felt so guilty about doing nothing on the exercise front, so I grabbed my dumbbells and played with them for 15 min. Slept like a baby after that.

New PR, yay! Just by a little bit, but I’ll take it any way I can get it. Boisterous crowd of runners near the start and musicians playing at the halfway point. Nice weather, which is not what I was expecting it would be a few days ago.

Congrats, Deborah! A PR by 0.01 second is still a PR. So glad that the weather cooperated.

Way to go, Deborah. You are doing so great!
Love iDad’s hike reports.

Resorted to the Fairmont dreadmill at 4:30am today before our 6am airport shuttle because it was quicker and safer than going outside at that time. 2 miles. I really, really don’t like treadmill running. I know there is more of it to come with wet, icy weather coming for the winter, but it really takes away what I love about running. The streak lives on, though.

I promise you I have eaten 100times worse than anyone here for the last few days. This conference seemed to think we needed a gourmet feeding every few hours! I didn’t even try to resist. The last two dinners were sort of “small bite” set ups all over the facilities. Last night was the waterfront Vancouver convention center. Just amazing food, views and art, music etc. The night before my weakness was maple sugar candy being handmade on a bed of “snow” (crushed ice) on sticks. I had so many the guy asked me if I wanted to make my own! On the plane home now. Have a day to clean up eating before going to Kona.
