I like Ezekial bread from time to time, but not every day. In Germany we spread quark (sort of like a smooth cottage cheese or ricotta) and herbs on it.

iPod nazi says never do stretches before working out – only dynamic movements such as jogging, exercise bike, etc. to warm up. He says that stretching when cold is a surefire recipe for injury. Stretching should be done at the end of the workout when then muscles are warmed up.

agree with the ipod nazi on stretching. But in yoga, we work up to some tough poses by doing gentle warm-up stretching first.

Anyway, had some beef last night (low fat grass-fed round made in a slow cooker with salsa). Well, I guess my body is NOT used to it since I had an upset stomach. No more cows for me!

^^^^Maybe it was the salsa?

Just thought I would put a good word in for the cow, lol. That dish actually sounds quite tasty.

No…not the Peach Mango salsa from TJs. I use it all the time

Yeah, I’ve made this beef dish before with no problem - but these days I only eat beef every other month or so. We had it in whole wheat wraps with avocado, tomatoes and low fat mex cheese. My boys did OK…in fact DS took some to lunch today.

Wow, that does sound really good.

Note on stretches for a particular issue as opposed to warming up. Most good PTs these days have you hold the stretch/exercise forever. I have to do my hamstring stuff for one to THREE minutes depending on the exercise. My idea of a long stretch used to be 15 seconds.

Did a 7 mile run this morning. Tried to stay slow and comfortable. Succeeded at the “slow” part of that. The heat and humidity is just horrible. I did relatively OK until about 5 miles and then the sun was up (still low in the sky) and I had to keep stopping to let my heart rate go down. I was drenched and very glad to get home. It will get better…

23 miles on bike today. Still gloomy and rainy around here. Thinking of trying elliptical again to see how it feels.

MOWC-

What time to you have to start your run in order to avoid the heat and humidity? Still sounds like a great effort.

I ran a 5K this morning on the treadmill. I’m done with outdoor running until the fall. Just too hot/humid.

I was out the door by about 5:40, but it was already 76 degrees and was up to about 80 when I finished. I used to have to do that all the time in Dallas, but it usually wasn’t as humid as it has been here in TN the last week or so.

Last week it was humid like that in Dallas…88 degrees and 98 % humidty is so much worse in my book than 102 degrees and low humidty.

I don’t even think we are going to have summer in Seattle this year- my tomatoes look pathetic :(

You can do just about ANY muscle with the foam roller. We use it a lot for the adductors, the IT band, the calves, and the hamstrings.

I would also agree about stretching beforehand. Only dynamic stretching. Static stretching leave for the end…

I’m posted about this guy before, but this article is just incredible. Even with all the insane things I’ve done in my athletic career, I can not even imagine…

My workout buddy went to the doctor today as she has high blood pressure. In her talks with him she said she was having trouble losing weight even though she has really increased her exercise. He laughed and said since she is over 40 and pre-menapausal the weight is just being maintained by her exercise, no matter how much she did. Said she had to drastically reduce her caloric intake if she wanted to get back to her old size…and she is not really overweight. Made me very sad since I have been busting my rear in the gym!

NM, sadly there was an article to that effect in today’s Dallas Morning News.

NorthMinn…wow…this is exactly what my gyn told me on my last visit. Just eat less he said. Frustrating. Anyway, I disagree for the most part. I think you’re building muscle and stamina and certainly burning calories. It’s just a lot of work - and the pounds don’t come off quickly.

Anyway, I’m pretty much done with my kick-start diet even though I cheated big-time on the weekends. Overall I lost 7 pounds in 2 weeks. Not bad after being on a big plateau. I’ve adjusted my eating habits and plan to lose slowly from here on in. I’m down 17 lbs from last fall though…pretty cool. Those graduation pics really got me going!

It all comes down to calories in vs. calories out. Exercise is critical, but you can only work out so much, so diet (calories in) is a key factor.

Toneranger, that is awesome!!!

Thanks missypie. I’m encouraged. I’m real tall so I tend to hide pounds pretty well. But the pics this May didn’t lie…10lbs was NOT enough.

Anyway, this was in the Washington Post today. “Spark” looks like a neat site and it’s free. IMO, it just CAN’T be as good as hanging out here though…
