Weirdly, I at age 54 have never heard of the “5 pounds for every inch past 5 feet” !!!

Hit my goal of 2013 miles for 2013 this morning, .4 miles into my 3.2 mile run. That’s done! I am not running well and feel like I’ve just run a long race within the past few days. Beautiful morning, though- 24 and sunny, no wind.

I have always heard the 5 pounds per inch over 5 feet and tried to stay under it. I think it is unrealistic for most people, especially depending on bone structure.

Pizzagirl- I really believe that anyone can become a runner. It just takes consistency and slowing down enough to build endurance. If Hines Ward could train and do the Kona Ironman (starting from NO running), anyone can become a runner.

Clapping hands from Ohio!! From afar, was happy to sort of be part of that 2013 journey MOWC!! I hope you did a tired, but happy dance!!!

As far as the running, I also think that for training/daily purposes you need to be happy/satisfied/motivated enough to be on your own - as in, running alone- no trainer, no other members of the class, no group ( except in races!). And that’s me - I prefer to exercise alone and on my own.

Congrats, MOWC!

Weirdly, abasket, even though I do these group classes, I feel like I’m exercising “on my own.” I like to be part of a crowd but by myself, if that makes sense! It’s my introvert calling out! Which is why I have been motivated by my little 5K’s, even though I go do them on my own. I’ve never run with anybody, though, and don’t think I’d really want to.

Congrats, MOWC.
Never much cared for running myself – tend not to, unless I’m being chased.
Do walk the 3 miles to work & home more often than not tho’.

What’s this 5 lbs / inch over 5 feet? That’d have a 6-foot-tall individual at 60 lbs.
(and, at 5’11", I’m content to be at or under 165 lbs).

MOWC: Congratulations on your mileage goal.

Been a slug for almost a week–too much food/wine and too little exercise. Broke the cycle on Xmas day with a 3 mile walk (18 degrees), slow flow yoga yesterday and today a TRX/kettlebell workout with my trainer (1 hour). Followed up with 3 mile walk on treadmill–cranked it up. Need a goal for 2014–thinking on it.

Congrats, MOfWC! Well done! 2013 miles - injury-free! Now you can plop yourself in a cozy chair and eat bonbons until the next year… Somehow, I have a very hard time picturing you doing that.
Good luck to WC’s GF in her training for the race!

Pizzagirl, I had to google the 5 lb rule. It is 100 plus 5 for each over 5, right? I think we were weight twins in our younger days.
I do not want to get back there! I did hit 117 lb about 2 years ago when I was experiencing some strange health issues with my blood pressure getting as high as 150/110. My body must have burned all fat and just began to burn the muscle, because in the beach photos from that ime I looked like I had a six-pack stomach. Other than that, there was nothing good about that sudden weight loss and the resulting look. Glad I’m back at 125 or so.

No, I’m not hanging at the 125 or so level
My weight itself is just a lot higher than what I think I look like, but I have to comfort myself by thinking it’s muscle!

As long as you can fit into a size 2, Pizzagirl, you are at a good weight! ;)

Oh, wow:

Numbers can be a curse people! I know some people really rely on the scale - 130 pounds can look entirely different on a half a dozen people of the same height - do you have to report your numbers to anyone??? Probably not! I can understand trying to keep in a short range - like " I’d like to stay 130-134" but aiming for an exact number or close to it sounds so defeating to me - because one day it’s there and the next day (or hour), its gone!

Short rolling hills run this morning.

Congrats on 2013 in 2013, MOWC. With time to spare.

That’s insane. You were very smart to say no. I would say that the percentage of middle age people who can do a proper jump to a 30 inch box is probably well under 1%. And, as Boyle points out in his video, he doesn’t want his NFL draft combine players doing bad form jumps to high boxes. The whole idea is to land in the same kind of “ready, athletic” position as you start. I can do them to a 16 inch box and don’t feel any need to go higher. I would NEVER try a 30 inch box.

I wouldn’t do a CrossFit style workout more than every other day. Just like intervals on the Airdyne, it’s not the kind of intensity that can be sustained day after day. Actually, a pretty good schedule would be to alternate the yoga days with workout/running days.

Wow. That planking endurance record YouTube is insane. I don’t think I’ll go after that one, although I have been drenched in sweat like that doing planks.

Congratulations on the 2013 goal MOWC. Amazing. We are not worthy!

KMCMOM:

After the thaw/rain early this week, all of the hiking reports from across New Hampshire are back to being miserable. It’s going to take a big snowstorm with no rain/thaw cycle to get things to a point that’s much fun.

Thanks, everyone. Last year I ran 2062, but I didn’t tank in December the way I did this year. I’m fine with what I’ve done this year, considering all the travel, family matters, etc. Next year I have no mileage goal, but will continue the streak. Tomorrow my daughter and I are running 8 miles, which feels long to me right now. It is in support of one of our running friends from RunningAhead who is battling cancer and is running 50 miles with some of our other friends. We all have “race” numbers to wear.

Oh- pizzagirl- something interesting. My son in law has been doing really well running with my daughter at a 4/1 ratio. (4 minutes running, 1 walking) This seems to keep his legs from tightening (he is a big guy and has some issues with his calves) and gives him some confidence. They are hitting about 11 minute miles, even with the walking, on hilly terrain, which I think is REALLY good. I think the run/walk system can be extremely beneficial.

Pizzagirl, to second what MOfWC said, you might want to try one of these classes if they are offered in your neck of the woods:

[Run-Walk | Jeff Galloway’s Official Website](Run Walk Run | Jeff Galloway)

Congratulations, MoWC! You continue to be my inspiration, as you have been for the past six years or so!

Run/walking is an EXCELLENT option. That is what I am doing these days. I have had NO injuries since I’ve done this. I had achilles tendonitis and other issues when I was running non-stop. Now I run a couple of miles non-stop, then switch to run/walking. I did 5.4 miles on the treadmill that way today. I hit 20 miles for the third week in a row! I am excited that I have some momentum going into the new year.

That WAS vanity sizing in a knit brand, though! I think at this point I’m pretty much a 6, though an occasional 8. MOWC has seen me and is on my facebook so she knows what I look like :-)

Thank you for the suggestions for the run-walk. That may get me going again!

This board is sooo great!!

iDad, speak for yourself.
There’s plenty of worthiness to go around. Running marathons is something of an extreme sport, in my opinion, and while I might think it’s a cool accomplishment when someone finishes one, I don’t think treating people like it’s the end all is particularly helpful to those seeking to take care of their health. It’s probably not a good idea for some, and it’s certainly not a requirement for being fit. Congrats to all here who are making the effort to tend to their health!

I thought iDad was just congratulating MOWC on something that’s important to her – not suggesting that we all had to be marathoners. Because if he thinks we’re all going to be marathoners, then I am in huge trouble!!

Yes, well, there are ways to compliment a person that don’t involve putting down everyone else.
