With my goals for the upcoming New Year, I’d definitely be motivated by seeing posts of people continuing with their efforts each and everyday.

Hops, what say you? ;)

Go Deb922!

Deb922- you can do it! Good for you for the goal! (My daughter is still mad at me for a 4th of July race back when she was about 13. She thought it was a 5K and, actually, it was an 8K and she wasn’t prepared for 5 miles in the Dallas heat.

I would never have a training runner (beginner or intermediate) do 12 miles to prepare for a 10K. I wouldn’t even have them do that for a half-marathon, unless they seriously needed the confidence and did a run/walk. Generally, you can race twice the distance you run in training. I would peak at 5 miles for a 10K if the goal is to finish comfortably. Going to speed is a different story.

Got the 6 miles in so have 2040.1 for the year. I’m happy with that. It was a nice day after a very cold morning. 32 by the time I ran at 10:30. Sunny and blue skies.

Niquii, most people just wade right in. I do think we’ve joked in the past that you need power stretch fleece, a kettlebell, Garmin, and a NuuMuu, none of which I own, still.

What a great way to end the year, MOfWC!

College students are always welcome here - anyone is! the earlier you start, the better! It is much better to not let yourself get out of shape than bring hourself back into shape. :)We have regular posters who can give you a ton of helpful advice when it comes to fitness and nutrition.

I can do a 10 minute mile pace. My problem is that I can only do it for a minute or two! :)

Niquii77:

The more the merrier. Jump right in. There’s no law against young people exercising, too! :)

That’s great to know!

I’ll be having LOTS of questions coming your guys’ way. I changed my meal plan this upcoming semester and eating healthy while not blowing money is a great concern. Once, I get through the first week, I’ll be able to see what needs to be done and the like.

The majority of my fitness goals are yoga driven. I WILL get the perfect handstand…But of course I need to gain the upper body strength first. ;)

BIG kudos to all you runners out there. Don’t know how you guys do it. I detest running with a passion.

Yeah, I have to apologize to abasket - I think I have my training schedules completely confused. I think all of my longer runs have been based upon training for a half, not a 10k. I think I might need to have a glass of wine to clear up my thinking.

Here’s to a great 2014! And welcome, Niquii!

Hi, Niquii77! Jump right in! Ha, when I met my husband, I told him NEVER to expect me to run! So he and I are still shocked that I am doing this. The key is that I started out running from one telephone pole to the next, then walking to the next pole. I increased my distance VERY gradually.

I took two days off, because my left big toe got badly bruised after I kept jamming my foot into the treadmill. I won’t make that mistake again! I was actually limping!

But I ran today and it felt good. 5.6 miles on the treadmill. More importantly, I managed to run 33 minutes before I had to take a minute walking break. My weight loss is helping, finally! My 2013 total is 511 miles. I really want to hit 1000 in 2014.

Deb922, you can definitely do it! I tell people that if I can, almost anyone can! I seriously have about zero natural running ability! It is a huge feeling of accomplishment to finish a longer race. I am excited about the half marathon I will be running next October.

With me in Toronto? Right, MaineLonghorn?

Hey, MOfWC, I keep trying to egg my friend on to run the Monkey. Are you in for the next year’s? :)

No- I’m taking at least a year off, but I am very involved with the event and will be working at the race, packet pickup etc. Come run it! I can help you get in since it’s by lottery. I have some pull. :)

Welcome, Niquii. We’re glad to have you. Great experience and support to be found here. You’ll have to put up with many of us who focus on “geezer fitness” since we are older, but we love to have younger folks here, too.

My gym officially closed today at 5pm. The new gym was supposed to be opening by January 15th but I doubt it will.

I will follow Idad’s example and workout in the basement. I was given a 40lb kettlebell for Christmas so the next month will see a lot of kb swings, goblet squats, push ups, planks etc. I will also do a stair workout in my building for 1/2 hour everyday after work.

Deb I’m excited for you!! You have been consistent besides the holidays and you will be in good shape. To me an 8k sounds PERFECT - still waiting to hear if I will be doing me early April - or I may find another one more local.

Cheers all!!

Unfortunately, the Airdyne never closes. So I rang out the New Year with another go at the dreaded 1 mile intervals. Pretty much exactly like the other day. Same average pace for three intervals (62 rpm pedal speed). Same max heart rate 95%. But, overall a little “easier”.

Ironically, I did exactly the same workout on New Year’s Eve in 2011. I was about 5 seconds faster on each interval back then. Not too bad, considering that I haven’t been doing a lot of Airdyne recently and haven’t been doing mile intervals at all. Same max heart rate, but nowhere near as gobsmacked as I was back then. I guess I’m leaving something on the table!

Oooh, Santa was good to you! Just walking around with a 40 lb KB is a good exercise.

Yes, Toronto, MoWC! Good, I wasn’t sure if you were planning on going. I’m going to rock it!!

Thanks, MOfWC! Will try hard to convince her that yours would be the next in her 50 state quest. ;)

I was watching a new kettlebell DVD last night. There are some fun things to come!

I did intervals on the elliptical instead of settling for just a brisk walk. It must be better for me because I worked up a sweat and wanted to stop…Did some hand weights this morning. The sugar detox is …uncomfortable. I have been trying to keep busy and stay out of the kitchen, and as a result I have the cleanest closets in the state :)

But, my husband said “well, if you are going to do this every day, then so can I” and he ran on the elliptical. Show off ;)
