Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Figured out how to copy the web address on my IPad. Here’s the link.

Apropos of the things people do at gyms that leave you shaking your head, this video says it all.

There’s a fitness version of 9gag in Instagram.

Here’s there Instagram page:

There is one video that reminded me of this thread because of the kettlebell mishap!

Dormtainment also had a HILARIOUS gym video. They made it a while back.

Simply HILARIOUS. Truly capture’s this generation’s obsession with social media and selfless!

Instagram is a great source of fitness motivation there is a page called Born2Transform. It only shares transformation stories of people before and after pictures. Very inspirational .

Teri, I’m not familiar with your app but I wonder if it’s not working indoors because it relies on GPS?

DebT, as you know, I’m not a runner. But when I was reading around and learning about planks reading McGill etc., there was a lot of talk about core, planks, bird dog, stir the pot etc being especially good for runners and athletes.

So I had a highly unusual workout yesterday that I didn’t exactly intend, but I’m counting it. The Home Depot truck got stuck halfway up the hill of my drive (not to be confused with my back hill on which I hike, but steep enough on its own.)

We had to unload a pallet of 35 heavy packs of resilient flooring. I defiantly have better hill legs than the delivery kids :)

Then I had to squat and lift each package to move it to the back of the studio so I could prep the floor (800 SF). I’m counting that as 3 sets of kb squats. This might have killed me a year ago, so although I was peeved the truck arrived before I could get my hike in, I was grateful for the strength and form I’ve garnered this year :)

kmc - love your post! I would definitely be counting that as a workout.

teriwitt - I notice how many people use the rowing machine incorrectly. I’m sure I was, too, before getting involved in a crew clinic when we lived in CT. And, re: daily “steps” – I’m pretty sure 10,000 steps is out there a lot as what people should be aiming for.

Received my GymBoss interval timer yesterday. The instructions included with it left a little to be desired, but their website has more complete information. The wrist strap is enormous, and I can’t adjust it so it holds the timer snugly against my wrist – and if the thing is slipping around, it will drive me nuts. The good news is I have a sewing machine (and know how to use it!) and can shorten the strap. Pretty psyched!

My garmin finally came a week after I ordered it. Haven’t tried it out yet. Spent yesterday trying to salt and chip the over an inch of ice off our driveway. It’s not from the freezing rain we had but rather the warmup and rain we had which made our driveway (and our entire subdivision) a sheet of ice. Only left the house to buy more salt which barely made a dent.

It’s been discussed here before but map my run is not accurate. It’s good to try and track workouts in a general way. It is not accurate as a gps. But it is better than nothing and keeps me honest. I look forward to using my garmin but probably not today. I’ll be on the treadmill again.

Looks like the Gymboss has an armband and a wristband available. I wonder if you have the armband if it is that big?

MOWC - I don’t think so. Although I could probably use what they sent as an armband, I’m not sure a guy could. It says the wristband fits 6 - 12" but it doesn’t cinch up quite that small. I want a nice snug fit so it doesn’t move around on my wrist. It won’t be hard to fix, just a little annoying to haul out the sewing machine. Really no biggie in the scheme of life.

After one great week, and one bad week, I am back on track. My husband uses a fitbit and I have ordered one. Finally the weather cooperated for a nice walk. Stats#-- 5.37miles, 69 active minutes. Instead of buying a treadmill this week, I will check some out at different gyms. I would like to join a gym, but there are so many choices in my area. Decision paralysis. Will try one out at a time!

For those of you who have lost a lot of weight, or have struggled to, I am wondering what you think about this Tedtalk. It actually seems quite discouraging to me.

I ran 6.0 miles on the treadmill yesterday. Today is a rest day. I hope I can get outside at some point this week!

Short 3.5 miles this morning. KMC, I love how you’re seeing the practical benefits of your workouts! That’s awesome.

KMC can start another career as a delivery person! Way to go.

4 1/2 low heart rate (well, substantial compliance) run. Gorgeous- 50-53 degrees and sunny.

My vaguely-formed New Years resolution that “I gotta exercise” because of my osteoporosis, is taking shape. These things always evolve for me as I go along, but I’ve come a long way in 12 days. Here’s my program as of now:

Full-out walk 5 days a week – both weekend days and 3 evenings during the week. On Fridays (the day I wear tennies at work), a shorter walk during lunch. One day off.

A full-out walk, for the moment, means I get on my walking clothes and leave the house and move around. This probably seems idiotic to some of you, but these are the first essential baby steps for a life-long exercise-a-phobe. It’s working; my first walks were 20-25 minutes, and this morning I was out for almost an hour.

At my SIL’s suggestion, I got a pedometer, and this is turning out to be amazingly motivating. I like the concreteness of it, both in terms of the goal (10,000 steps/day) and my progress (I’ve gotten as high as 8500). And I find myself on the lookout for ways to get more steps into my day; for example, when shopping I’ve started parking out in the back 40.

Another one of my major problems with exercise is boredom, so at my brother’s suggestion I got myself an iPod nano and some good [Sports Headphones](http://store.sony.com/sports-headphones-zid27-MDRAS200//cat-27-catid-All-Headphones-Earbuds) which are very comfortable and cannot be dislodged. I’m not much of a music person, but the iTunes store has zillions of free podcasts. That’s why I was out so long this morning; the podcast I chose was 50+ minutes and I didn’t want to turn it off before it was over.

Next up, I need to get some decent exercise clothes. I’ve been walking around the neighborhood in my sweats.

Sounds good, LasMa.

5 mile treadmill run. It’s been very busy at the gym on Sundays lately, so although interesting from a people watching standpoint, not really ideal for long runs.

Thanks for the responses to the strength exercises for runners survey. :-)

I’m so jealous of those of you who are able to get outside and walk or run. Our sidewalks are getting there, but still spotty slush/ice/black ice - in the 30’s today and I’m tempted to at least try and get out a little bit and walk or walk/run or SOMETHING!! Just don’t want to take a foolish chance.

I hear you, abasket! We had the mother of all showers here in my neck of the woods on Saturday. Winds picked up Friday night, and on Sat the street looked like someone had deliberately covered it with fir branches. A huge Douglas fir crashed onto the busy road nearby, taking down the power lines and completely blocking traffic for the entire day. When I was coming home last night around 11 pm, the crews were still dealing with the mess. So it looks like another treadmill day. Yay. Not. I need to run 7 miles.

LasMa: It is not idiotic at ALL. I am / was a lifelong exercise-a-phobe, and just having a goal to walk for X number of minutes is a great way to begin.

I haven’t been using my Fitbit in a while (probably should charge it back up again), but I hear you regarding the concreteness of it.

You’re on the right track!

As for me - after fighting a bad head cold and repeated doses of Nyquil which knocked me out, I woke up this morning feeling like a new woman. Met a girlfriend and did 2 yoga classes at Corepower - feeling great! Feel like I got my mojo back, so onward and upward.

7 miles non-treadmill. 36 degrees and sunny.
