Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Amazed at those who have lost large amounts of weight. That is just great.

Agree it is a lifestyle change vs a diet. Okay, I have never been overweight, but I have agonized over an extra five pounds. Leaving the scale/diet mindset and moving to a performance/health/fuel mindset made all the difference.

Trainer and spin. I worked through the tired legs to the happy legs place.

15 miles on the recumbent doing baby intervals, weight machines and 1 mile on the dreadmill. I feel pretty good! :)

Go NMinn !

Great job, NMinn! How is your knee doing?

If I give the knee a rest every other day I can make it through. Two days in a row and it gets puffy and hurts. It is what it is so I will just have to muddle through. Guess I need to lift more! ;)

This morning I ran outside for the first time in weeks. My running partner hasn’t been running, period, so she was pretty rusty. We went only two miles, run/walking at minute intervals. I have to say, it felt good for that not to be a workout at all! It left me feeling antsy to run more. So this afternoon, I did 4.2 more miles on the treadmill (my driveway is literally too icy to walk on, and I didn’t feel like driving someplace to run outdoors).

I was up early and went on a birding hike yesterday–absolutely beautiful day. We walked about 4 miles, but stopped frequently to look at photograph the raptors, wading birds, and many alligators snoozing in the sun. Most beautious–the roseate spoonbills. Today, son and I went to the gym where I ran a couple of miles on the treadmill and did arm/back weights. We were enthusiastic to exercise today after reading in the paper that one of son’s friends took local high place and 9th overall in the big marathon here yesterday. Lots of people were walking around still today with huge medals from the event finish. Go distance runners!

Great advice on lifestyle changes, kmc, idad, and mathmom. Glad to hear the knee is okay NMinn.

That’s possible; it does rely on GPS. After this happening a few times, I’m also noticing that a couple of my other apps are shutting down on me, meaning the screen is on the app, then the app screen disappears; it’s now happened with my camera, and my Facebook app when I tried to load a story from a FB link. So it could be a phone issue; with three iPhones and 3 MacBook Pros in the family, I can never remember when who got what. It may be time for a new iPhone for me; I’m guessing I’ve had this one close to, if not more, than two years. It’s just weird that I noticed the MapMyWalk app fail first, now it’s the camera and FB.

My GPS Garmin does not work indoors at all, even when my iPad apps do. I wish it did!

peacefulmom - I agree with the others regarding lifestyle vs. dieting. At least I’ve always looked at it as a lifestyle change, and not dieting (which I define as something temporary). I kind of wish the speaker had delineated between the two. The way I see many of us here, is that we’re making lifestyle changes, not dieting. I’ve always heard that 1-2 lbs. a week is a good goal (depending on where you’re starting at). I always cringe when I see those tabloid headlines saying, “Lose 20 lbs. in 2 months.” Yea, I suppose it can be done, but I think it’s the exception that someone does that, keeps it off permanently.

^^^ Yea, my car’s GPS (built in - not a Tom Tom or Garmin) does not work when I go into a parking garage, and takes a while to find itself once I come out.

Oh, as far as moving goes… worked with personal trainer yesterday; did water aerobics and PT today. At my PT appointment in two weeks, I’m going to bring my bathing suit and she’s going to show me some pool work to do. I know I’ve made progress, but sometimes it seems as if we keep finding more and more muscles that have been impacted by the limited activity I had when the bursitis started. Today it was the adductors - SO very tight!

I use the RunKeeper app outside of course, but even inside just to track time - the GPS is TOTALLY inaccurate inside ! One minute it says I’m running a two minute mile, the next 5 minute interval it says I’m running a 45 minute mile! And the visual Map of my run looks like chicken scratch!! After I run I Delete the workout and then manually add in my miles.

A quick 2.5 miles today - was on a limited time schedule so only had 25 mins of actual running - track time and then 10 minutes of intervals on the treadmill.

Busy day today - work, then to the vet, then a five mile run. Interesting article that came through my facebook feed today:

GPS does not work inside. Ever.

3 miles on dreadmill after work. Low heart rate run and I was very good about it until about the last 1/4 mile when it crept up a little.

http://m.us.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052702303949504579262711575922246?mobile=y

80 hours a month. That’s almost 3 hours a day .

Only 1 1/2 hours for me today! Stretch/strength/core. 45 min elliptical. 4 x 266.

Hah. My “workout” today consisted of taking my Airex exercise mat outside next to the car and crawling around and under the car replacing all the headlight and fog light bulbs. I noticed a fog light out last week. Of course, the bulbs are sold in pairs and, since you practically have to remove the engine to change a bulb, you might as well change all of them once you start. Yesterday and today were balmy (mid-40s), so that was the plan. Alas, I got everything changed and in making sure they worked, noticed that the foglight that had originally prompted the whole endeavor was half full of water!

So, that led to an hour of more crawling around to get the light housing out for inspection, where I found that a rock (or something) had blasted a hole in the top of the housing allowing water from rain and the car wash to fill it up. That’s why the bulb was burned out. Fortunately, I got the new bulb out before it croaked. Dealer didn’t have a replacement housing in stock, so part on order and everything buttoned back up, hoping for another balmy day to stick the replacement in next weekend. Meanwhile, I have a hole in my front bumper where there used to be a fog light. That thing was way TOO hard to get out to put it back in only to do it all over in a few days…

I should have just left well enough alone… Who needs two fog lamps, anyway? :)

The good news: I can contort and twist myself into positions I never knew possible (and that’s what you have to do to reach these bulbs!).

My daughter sent me this. Awesome idea for something fun to do with snow shoes and the new compass she gave me for Christmas:

Looks like my workout will be postponed for rush. At least I can eat healthy!

I enjoyed a wonderful hard boiled fruit salad concoction for breakfast. The dining hall oddly had a variety of fresh fruit today…Not that I’m complaining. ;)

Lunch wasn’t all that interesting. I had a quick snack of peanuts, fruit and hummus and chips.

Dinner was BANGIN’. Chipotle chicken sandwich on a fluffy multi grain loaf with fresh fruit and steamed veggies. Had to add a bit of salt, but I didn’t mind, although I rarely add salt.

Spinning class this evening and a 2-mile walk this morning. Enjoyed the spinning class–mostly because I loved the instructor’s music choices. She was young but played a bunch of oldies–guess she knew her audience.

Teri–I use Map My Walk, but it’s not on my iPhone. I use it on my home computer (Mac ibook). I enter all my walks on it (even when I’m at vacation place). I’ve never had a problem with it but I always walk on the road. I went to the local high school track a couple of months ago. It was a standard track so I knew my mileage and didn’t bother using Map My Walk.

Mathmom – Do we get an update on the loot, what you ended up bringing home?
Abasket – There are Valslide workout videos on YouTube.
iDad – Cool pics.

Acquisitions: a couple of new pairs of running shorts and a gift for my spouse which was ordered from a sporting goods store and should be arriving in a few days. :-)
