Ooh. Griffith Park will be really nice. If your hip would prefer flat land, Santa Monica beach (or Venice Beach) are nice strolls and great people watching…

^^^ You’ve been lurking on my ‘Los Angeles for Dummies’ thread, haven’t you??

I want to try uneven hikes/walks so I can get an idea of how the hip will respond, so I’ll know just how far I might be able to push myself on our cruise next month (do we need to stick with guide-led easy tours, or can we do some water sports/hiking, etc.). We still haven’t reserved any of our excursions as I have no idea what I can do comfortably at this point. Which reminds me, I think as a caution, I’m going to refill my Celebrex and have it with me on the cruise, just in case.

Happy birthday, Bromfield!

Deborah, thanks for the nice post. :)

MOfWC, good luck with your treadmill install! With the weather like you’ve had recently, you really need it. Crowded gyms are not fun. As Teri’s experience shows, one might even get a peep show! Ouch.

kmcmom, geezers might still have a shot at the Olympic ice - all we need to do is to learn curling ;)

Back on track. Salad for lunch. Salmon and brocolli for dinner. One clementine and a bit of cheddar cheese for late night munchies. The clementine and some balsamic vinegar was pretty much all the sugar today.

Bunsen, I agree curling is a geezer option but the outfits just aren’t as cute
Hill is crunchy now…I prefer that to powdery…nice sound effect and warns the wildlife I’m coming…then again, I’m sure the panting does that!

Hi all! Lurking, but back on track. It’s like the switch got turned back on, and I’m really clean w the eating. Yesterday I did 2 hot yoga classes - sculpt and regular vinyasa, and it was back to feeling GOOD to exercise! Haven’t really gotten back into the running yet but feel it will come with time.

Have a big challenge ahead of me, as I will be leaving in a week to travel to a China and Japan for 2 weeks. I can manage the eating ok, but it’s hard to exercise when you are so upside-down time-wise

Welcome back and good luck on the trip, pizzagirl!

Bunsen- I am fortunate that our gym is nice and is able to handle the load. I’ve never had a problem getting a treadmill. It just seems like there are…people! I have more trouble in the weight room. There always seems to be someone on the equipment I want to use in the after-work timeframe. I just get tired of parking, going in, changing into icy cold clothes that have been in the car all day, working out, repeat…

Teri, your story about the guy in the sauna…LOL!!! :)

That’s a long far away trip PG! Remember that even 15-20 mins of exercise in your hotel room is worthwhile.

Teri- Great story. Yep- can’t unsee THAT!

kmcmom- crunch away!

4 x 400 speed work today, weight class yesterday.
Happy Birthday Bromfield!

4.6 miles at lunch. Sunny, 29 with enough wind from the north to make it chilly heading in that direction. I wore a LOT of stuff and got a little too sweaty, but I am glad I wasn’t cold!

3.1 miles at the gym

3 miles on the treadmill. Have my first head cold in 2 years but it seems to be somewhat mild. Hoping I nipped it in the bud!

Awkward moment at the gym today. I was in the treadmill moving along nicely. I see this woman approaching another treadmill - she looked about 60ish but a little rough , so hard to say for sure. Moving slow and not saying this rudely but not in shape - to help you paint a pic in your mind. She was wearing sweet pants and a long sleeved shirt. I look over and before she gets on the treadmill I see her pulling off the shirt - wait! All that is u der that shirt is a grey deep V sports bra!! And it doesn’t fit very well! And she is well, quite saggy!! Omg, that is how she stayed! She got on that treadmill , girls dragging along! I really contemplated saying something- but what? She didn’t last long on the treadmill and then she proceeded to somewhere else - still walking around in her sweatpants and stretched out bra. :(. I felt bad for the guys next to her - how Awkward !

Would you have said anything directly to her? I didn’t see her around when I got off my machine…

Oh God, abasket! I guess you probably shouldn’t say anything, but how awful! One of my very fast and fit running friends over 50 wrote a funny blog entry about women over 52 (her age at the time) NOT needing to be running in just sports bras without a singlet/tank top. Up until that time I did just that on the (many) hot days, but it made me reconsider- and I’m pretty petite. Your lady sounds, um, not appropriate.

If you are fit, and maybe otherwise dressed appropriately, smallish on top - ok, fine. Even if you are 52. I wouldn’t , but others might. This was like watching my mother take off her shirt and walk around at the gym!

Pizza girl, have you ever done a TRX workout? The TRX is a fantastic suitcase/carry-on packable piece of workout equipment if you are traveling. I’ve used it in hotel rooms traveling in Italy, on the foredeck of a sailboat, on a balcony of a rented condo that had an exterior staircase leading to a rooftop deck. You can mount it on a sturdy tree limb. And the workouts you can do with it are almost limitless. It may be something you could take with you to China.

My co-workers - who as a guide are not fit but decoded to take advantage of some free fitness classes at work this winter did the TRX class today for the 3rd time and seem to love it. They are trying to convince me to go. I’m Just not a good class person so I’ve resisted (is that a pun? TRX CLASS/resisted??)

Ew, I wouldn’t consider a sports bra to be “outerwear” unless you are quite young and in great shape–and even then it’s not something I would do, personally. And it needs to fit and do its job!
Abasket–your description reminds me of a collection of photos I saw online of “people seen at Walmart.” :-"

Abasket, have you considered taking a privateTRX training session? One is all you would need to get started and many clubs have a TRX available to use outside of a group class. Or you could get one for home use. There is a portable mounting pad that enables you to mount the TRX by slinging it over a bedroom door that you then close. Works very well even mounted like that. Just have to decide whether to lock the door lest you get a surprise if someone opens it while you are doing an exercise.

New regimen of PT exercises, which decreases the amount of time it takes me to now about 10-15 minutes; 40 minutes on NuStep.

So… this is the move that proved I have a lot of room for improvement - you stand with your back against a wall, and your feet about 18-24" or so in front of you so that your legs are at an angle, and your feet are relatively close together; then you march - one foot up, then down, then the other up, then down. Sounds easy, right? When I pick up my right foot so that my weight is on my left foot, my back almost always starts to slide to the right (and I could end up on the floor if I don’t catch myself) - I just do not have the strength on that side of the body to confidently hold myself up. When I lift up my left leg, so that I’m standing on my right leg, I’m fine. I’m trying really hard, but it’s making me feel really unfit. I usually do a repetition of 10-15 on each side, and sometimes toward the end of a set, I am able to make the move without sliding while standing on my left leg, but it’s really hard - boy do I have lots of work to build that side back up again! But my PT really likes this move for me, and tells me to just have my hands ready to slap against the wall if it appears like I might be sliding toward the floor!
