Did 30 minutes with my weights and then 4.7 miles today. Deb, I was thinking of you today, paying attention to how I was feeling. The first 1.5 miles felt like a struggle, then I started to feel better. I think it just takes that long for my mind to wander away from reality.

Deb, how is your outside air? We have lots of pollen now. If it used to be an issue for you, maybe it is still kind of is. I also wonder about your going out too fast. Alternating running and walking will let you go further, but so will starting out more slowly. I know you feel like you aren’t moving that fast right now, but just a little more slowly might help. Can you talk when you run? The easy talking pace is a good place to start.

I think about rhythm when I run (or swim for that matter). I find the most comfortable breathing pattern and stick with that.

60 degrees and sunny in southern NH today. Had to get outside for a little taste of spring. Not many hiking options – still lots of snow in the mountains. So I did a little 4.3 mile flat-land hike at the nearby Audubon Center. Still some patches of ice and snow, but not too bad. Got a chance to play around on a trial run with the new video camera:

[Massabesic hike](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube)

It was so nice to be out in a (long sleeve) t-shirt. No gloves. No snow shoes.

First outdoor run of the season in shorts and a tshirt - wooooo!!! :). 70 beautiful degrees. Also 25 mile winds but I did not care! Felt so good to be out and not bundled!!!

3 outdoor miles. Darn, I have shin splints! It hurts on my left leg to the left of my shin. How do I fix this?? Hurts like crazy! Over the past three years I have battled a torn meniscus and back problems and now this. Getting older is not for the faint of heart! ;)

I love that video, iDad. It all looks beautiful.
NMinn- ice the shin. I wonder if Hokas would help you. The cushioning is SO good!

Cool video.

NM, do you enjoy swimming or cycling? Shin splints suck. Maybe lower impact stuff for a while would give em a rest. The nearness of your shedding-for-wedding might have you winding up your activity level a little too quickly :)

Do you have an airdyne? It’s an evil contraption for sure, but IMHO, gives the biggest exercise hit for the buck with the absolute least number of impact issues

Deb, let me know when the chauffeur shifts have calmed down and I’d be happy to introduce you to my friend. I was telling her about what you were experiencing and was surprised to learn that SHE also has slight exercise-triggered asthma, which she suspects you’re experiencing. Surprised because I watched this woman kill the Ironman in her age group
At any rate, seems like you two would be a good fit.

MOWC…the Hoka reviews sound great! Will see if I can find them around here. I have had bouts of this before. The strange part is I don’t have the pain on the dreadmill just when I walk outside and then only when I increase my pace. If I walk slowly I don’t have the pulling/stretching pain. I must have really stressed the muscle last night as it is still tender this morning. Heading to the lake today so may have to dig out the bike if the snow is gone up there.

kmc…I use the recumbent bike at the gym. I like it! I have never noticed ant Airdynes there but will look.

I would recommend the Bondis or Stinson Tarmac for max cushioning, NMinn. Also- be careful of over-striding. Shorten your steps a little to keep the stress off the shins.

NMinn, Zappos sells Hokas. They are very lightweight and well cusioned.

A heartfelt thanks to everyone here!

Today was a great day, 3.2 miles!

Lots of suggestions I used today. This might be long so you are forewarned.

First, I downloaded the Jeff Galloway app. It really helped me. Knowing that I could walk after 3 minutes was key. I breezed through my workout and didn’t run any slower than when I was trying to not walk. It would be nice to be able to not walk, but this was great and most important. I feel great!

I was running in my neighborhood but today I went to the multi-purpose trail that I like running on. It’s a snowmobile trail in the winter and the ice had just melted. It felt great to be back lol! I think it’s important for me to not run from the house but to drive to a designated place. Puts me in a work out frame of mind.

It was warmer today and what a difference! 50 and sunny. Ran in tights and a long sleeve shirt but took that off and ran in a tank. Wore my favorite socks that I know don’t give me blisters. And I bought these new balance shoes and decided I just don’t like them. Switched to mizunos that were indoor treadmill shoes and they were much more comfortable. I think I’m going to retire the new balances. They are just not that comfortable.

So I feel so much better than earlier in the week. Thanks. Today is great but rain, rain and more rain for the weekend.

deb:

Sounds good! A little warm spring weather seems to work wonders, huh? :)

Glad you had a good run deb!

3.6 miles today.

nminn:

I think shin splints are one of those classic “overuse” type injuries. I had them like crazy when I started walking. I think the key is to figure out how long/far you can walk pain free and then stop. Live to walk another day! If I recall, uphill really set it off for me.

deb- So glad you had a good workout! It is such a good feeling when you know you aren’t doomed to be miserable every time! It sounds like you did all the right things. Walking breaks are just fine. Isn’t it interesting that you can still cover ground in the same time?

That’s good news Deb! Before you know it each day will be nice and warm!!

As you can tell, I am pretty happy today!

NM, if you are a member at REI, there is a 20% member coupon. Also I found a 15% off coupon for the running warehouse at retailmenot. Both carry Hokas. They seem to be the in shoe right now. I may or may not have ordered a pair. ;). Bad of me.

I was shocked that I could run/walk as fast as I was just running and felt much better.

Deb, I’m so glad that you had a positive running experience today!

Don’t forget to check 6pm - there are some Hokas on sale!

So, I bought my annual loaf of bread – Pepperidge Farm Rye. It’s a long story, but one of my powerful memories is sitting in the grandstands at Augusta National starting when the gates opened at 8 am to get the best seats on #13 for Saturday and #15 for Sunday. Just waiting for the concession stands to open and get the best sandwich in the world – ham and cheese on rye, spread with an mixture of equal parts yellow mustard and mayo. So, now, Masters weekend means I have to buy ham, cheese, and rye bread for commemorative lunches. So, apologies to my metabolism. At least the rye bread is the only bread in the grocery aisle that doesn’t have added sugar! And, I’m not washing it down with Coca-Cola (or beer).

I’ve got you covered on the beer, iDad! Drinking a high gravity bourbon barrel stout. It’s been one of those days! Enjoy the ham and rye! I have a 5K in the morning as part of my corporate team. Plan is to jog the 10K right after for miles.
