Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Thanks for the warm welcome. The elliptigo looks fun, but I’m likely to do more damage to myself…klutz is my middle name! I will use this thread’s inspiration to do what I can and be sure to do something every day. I think, as my knee heals (boy, a surgical repair takes much longer to heal at 58 than I remember it taking at 38!), I will incorporate more steady walking and biking into my regimen. I’d love to run again, but I’m not sure how practical that is as I have another meniscus tear in the other knee just waiting to get bad enough to require repair.

Meb is The Bomb!

Deb- glad you like the Nuu-Muu. I have about 11 and love them all. I have found great ways to layer them with jean jackets, tops and leggings for casual wear. They are great for travel and are cute over skinny jeans, too. I lived in mine on our Florida trip. I wore hot yoga shorts (more than briefs but much less than bike shorts) under them, too.

runnersmom- Another thing to try as you up your walking is the Hoka shoes. I think you would be pleased- we have some converts on this forum. They would give you good cushioning and might make it easier.

The Hoka shoes look great…is the depth of the sole as much as it looks? I’ve been wearing New Balance 750s for the last 6 months. My go-to running shoes historically have been Asics or Brooks, but those NBs were great until the surgery. I do think greater cushioning will be helpful as I get back to moving more. Do I need to order online or are they available in standard running stores or REI etc?

Many running stores are carrying them now, but not all. Google online- there are often some deals. Zappos has them, too. I would recommend Bondi 2 or 3 or Evo Stinson Tarmac. Yes, the sole is high, but it doesn’t “run” high, if you know what I mean. The cushioning is unbelievable. Many ultra runners and triathletes have switched to them. Reports on them solving people’s issues with feet/legs are all over the place. I find that they run big. I sized down half a size, but I normally go up a full size from street shoes in running shoes. I’ve ordered from thetrishop.com before and gotten a discount.

6pm has a bunch of Hokas, too!

Here, here. Much as I’d love to do the treadmill every time I go to the gym (3X a week), my hip and knee bother me, so I’ve learned to alternate with the elliptical. Less cardio, but also less wear and tear on the old joints.

Speaking of knees. Mine has been a little funky since I jammed it 2 weeks ago running down a long descent. Been doing more cycling and swimming. Was inspired by MOWC yoga session and it REALLY helped my knee. I agree that it really helps runners and think I’m going to incorporate 1x -2x per week into my schedule. This is one area I don’t compete as I’ll never be one of the pretzel boys and girls. I do what I’m able to do and it has helped. I’ve also started up with the AlterG again. I did 5 fast miles at 70% body weight tonight and the swelling actually DECREASED. My chiro was so encouraged he told me to run all my distance the next couple weeks on the AlterG.

Finally nothing helps a knee more than quadricep glute and hip exercise . I bought a book an amazon called the knee book and it indicated that hip quads and glute weakness cause many knee problems. It has some great excercises. Idad has some great ones. Finally one last push for a foam roller. It works.

Short workout for me. Dreaded Airdyne intervals. 1/4 miles. Under 16 minutes from the start of the warmup til the end of the cool down.

Got robbed. My heart rate didn’t go up high enough to give me any rest between the first and second intervals. I guess that means I need to pedal faster!

Off the kitchen. Making a batch of Jacques and Julia’s Mediterranean Seafood Stew. Bunch of chopped clams and a half pound of “chowda fish”.

Amen, ohio! This is the exact words of wisdom my trainer used to encourage me when my knee was funking out. The little clamshells, bridges, wall sits, squats did wonders for me.

Oh, and if you want to treat your knee to something very nice, here is the Lamborghini of knee braces:

Since I do not trust my knee, this brace ran 2 marathons with me.

Yep. Obviously a torn meniscus or a ruptured ACL is a different story, but non-specific general knee pain is often caused by hip issues. The problem is that we tend to move the hip in one plane only and spend all day with the hip bent (sitting). Running compounds the problem because it’s so repetitive with the hip bent forward.

Here’s Mike Boyle’s article explaining the mechanics of knee pain:

The first two exercises are my favorites for hip extension;

My streak of 960 days wasn’t a very big deal compared to this!

75 minute hot yoga class after work, I’m doing better but it sure is hard, my butt sure locked up afterwards, but it did pretty well during class. I rolled around on the tennis ball when I got home which helped some.

Good lord. I haven’t even been able get out of bed everyday for 45 years, let alone run at least a mile.

Even I didn’t run after knee surgery. At some point some of this stuff just becomes REALLY stupid.

In another 11.5 years he will reach the moon.

Silly me. I won’t even do plank two days in a row…

Okay, I’ve made the leap to insanity. I’ll turn 51 in September. In November I’ll be running my first marathon. Registered and paid for, no turning back.

6 really humid miles this morning. Morning running definitely helps to suppress my urge to eat.

A marathon, that’s great sabaray!! I think I will live vicariously through you, as I don’t think I have it in me to do a marathon.

Go, sabaray! :)
