Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Copper River Salmon is amazing–we had once on a trip to the Northwest. Sometimes I can get it at the fish market here. Is this the season for it BB?

Monday to Wednesday activities: spinning, yoga, workout with trainer–heavy weights/TRX combo. Yoga was a killer today. It always surprises me that sometimes there’s stuff I can do easily one day and other days I can’t do much of anything. Even downward facing dog hurt today.

Sabaray you are probably right about the scotch. 2500 plus calories for a bottle of scotch is a dangerously high amount of calories to consume!

Not the news I wanted to hear from my trusted orthopedic surgeon! He was glad to see me and wanted to know all about my son (he did his ACL repair in 2007) and a scar tissue cleanup the next year.

He said I have to be completely on the crutches for 2 more weeks (I can walk in the closet/bathroom etc) and then have to wean from them. NO swimming for now- he doesn’t like the torque from the kicking. No nothing for now. Not even elliptical for 4 more weeks. I can swim some and aquajog in 2 more weeks.

The big thing is he almost ordered me back on Forteo (the injections for bone density). He said I will be absolutely broken since I have a T Score of -2.8. He said “I don’t think your bone doctor understands exactly what it is you are doing” (referring to my mileage and racing). He said after the Forteo runs out (I can only take it for 9 months since there is a lifetime cap on how much of it you can take) there is a drug he recommends that is estrogen based but someone helps prevent cancer instead of causing it because of how it is formulated. He said under no circumstances should I take the Boniva/Fosomax class of drugs. So- lots of fun. I started to complain about the Forteo since it is daily injections (small needle- I survived it in 2007) and to travel with it requires an ice pack and small cooler and he shut me off by saying “You run marathons. You are used to discomfort.”

Somehow I had convinced myself he would let me off the crutches, so I’m disappointed. I am really sick of the crutches, but my arms are looking GREAT!

Cherry-tarian, that sounds yummy.

Oban … Maybe I will try that while I am on vacation next week. This group is wild and crazy! However, I won’t hike after my 1 oz of Oban … That up is probably pushing it for my shrinking self.

All this talk of shoes suggests some of you may know about neuromas. I have been icing my right foot when mine flares up. My trail shoes don’t cause it to hurt at all, but my road shoes do, and bare feet after a run is a definite no-no as that wakes it up even more. Any suggestions on how to but a metatarsal neuroma back to sleep?

Aww, sorry MOWC. I will run extra for you this week.

Oban was my favorite distillery tour. Wonderful seaside town.

Right now, it,s gin martini on outdoor deck in downtown bar harbor. Seafood platter on the way. Double slaw, no fries.

Legs are toast. Retinas burned from drop dead scenery. Seven plus miles and two mountains today. Salad is here. Bye.

Ouch, MOfWC. I’ll take blisters and black toenails over daily injections and travel with ice packs! Besides, the marathon “discomfort” only lasts 4 and some hours. Sigh. Hope the drugs will do their trick for you. Your doctor sounds like a true gem who knows his stuff.

I’ve been sitting on my butt all day and it hurts!!! Soon there will be a big exercise ball rolling in my cube.

So sorry MOWC, crappy news.

I am going to say this and am sorry. But I hated the Hokas. Gave me shin splints like no tomorrow. I wanted to like them, I really did. I tried to wear them but was seriously limping in them. I went to my local running store and asked them because everyone seems to love their Hoka’s. They thought that my feet were too flat and with the cushion in them, they flattened out my feet too much.

I have never done this but I sent them back and I got a merchandise credit.

My calf is finally feeling better. 3 mile trail run yesterday. Rest day today, rained all day here.

That stinks, MoWC, especially the shots.

I put in four miles of walking today and one of the metabolic workouts at the gym from Drop Two Dress Sizes . I bet I’ll feel that tomorrow. Tonight’s dinner was really yummy turkey meatballs with a tomato sauce.

Thanks, everyone. I’ll get through it, and it’s minor compared to what so many have to face as far as medical issues, but it sure is a pain. I hope I can at least get back to hot yoga in a few weeks. I forgot to ask him about that. I’ll see how my next MRI looks. At least yoga isn’t pounding.

I know others who haven’t liked the Hokas. There will never be a shoe that is good for everyone. I have never liked New Balance or Mizuno, and I’ve tried them.

My daughter and son in law are in Kenya doing doctor/chaplain work (not a mission trip- it’s actually part of his Vanderbilt job) and my son just booked 3 weeks in Hawaii (including our Kona week). He gets to work from there for part of it and is trying to qualify for mountain bike triathlon worlds. What’s wrong with this picture? I’m trotting off to work every day on friggin’ crutches and had to stretch to be out of the office for a WEEK for Kona! I want to be reincarnated as my kids! Entirely too many choices of smiley faces…

:">

I have your feet, BB. Wish I had your speed too.

MOWC, wish you had gotten better news today but it sounds like you’re in good hands.

No exercise today other than dog walks. Really feeling tired. Going to a new doc on Monday - I think I’ll like him as he sent me a ten page questionnaire which included items such as: explain your relationship with food; diary everything you’ve eaten in the past 24 hours; goals for health improvements in the coming year.

I’m partial to Highland Park, Scotland’s northernmost distillery. But I’m happy to drink Oban too. I’d have preferred not to know the calorie count, though I really do drink it in tiny quantities.

Glass half full MOWC, you’re half way through - 2 weeks done, 2 to go and then you can add an activity or two in.

Deb, great that you could at least get the credit on the shoes.

Sabaray, thanks for the tips, I might do a little tweeking on the next couple runs.

Oh wow I missed that part! MOfWC finished the Crutch Half and is off to run the second half of the Crutch Full!

It sounds like you were given meds better suited for your particular situation. The injectable drug is supposed to work to increase bone density instead of just stopping the loss which bisphosphonates do.

MomWC, sending ya the halfway mojo for recovery. Sorry your news wasn’t better but glad you’re in good hands!
I will say that whole aquajogging is low impact, I’m kinda glad for you that its still off the table for a spell. I have found it entirely possible somehow to pull muscles here and there if I am not careful…but I have no real land form to save me  so perhaps that phenom is unique to d, but my Chiro is suspicious as he gas a few clients who seem to pop ribs when aquajogging.

Was scotch shopping just last night…must be something in the air  Our fav single malt around here is 18-yr Glenmorangie, but fortunately mch does not plow through copious amounts. We figured out how to avoid same by stocking 12-yr Glenmorangie in the “visible” bar as a decoy when kiddo and his friends are in town :)

Nonetheless, we ran out on the weekend and i was tasked with finding a bottle for Father’s Day. Could find 20-year Balvenie but no 18 Glenmorangie anywhere. Now I know why mch orders it online from a distributor in Cali. Half the price and always in stock!

So, mch is getting a fancy 2" thick pool float and a sampler set of Balvenie for Father’s Day instead.

Bunsen- yes, that is what is better about the Forteo and why the orthopedist wants me on it. I have to pick it up this morning, go to the bone doctor for a refresher lesson, drag the medication to work (on my crutches) and refrigerate it, drag it home etc. Minor stuff, but…

kmc- I think one key to aquajogging is to use a true running motion and not cycling. It’s easy to lapse into more of a cycling motion since it doesn’t feel like you are doing much with the lower knee lift.

The grocery store was selling Erdinger Weissbier in a five-pack with a World Cup decorated glass - perfect for dh.

Sorry the news wasn’t better for MOWC. I was doing kettleball swings last night and did one with bad form or else my back which has been on and off since last Friday was acting off, so I stopped. Scale still seems to be drifting down in .2 increments. I suspect it’s just that my job has kept me on my feet a lot the last couple of weeks - and I often draw standing up.

I’m home. Up at dawn (5:30 ish) this morning packing up camp. Side trip to the LLBEAN flagship store in Freeport to break up the drive home. I need a nap!

Too hard to post much hunt and pecking the Kindle, but I’m sorry to hear that MOWC didn’t get better news. However, it sounds like she’s being an excellent patient, which probably means a good prognosis!

My legs are toast. I could barely walk to the grocery store to restock my lettuce after 5 hours in the car. I even have a Garmin tan line!

Thanks, iDad. Can’t wait to hear more about the hike and what you bought at LLBean! I’ve been to that store.

Well, in a new low for corporate health, I found something amazing in our boardroom- a milk chocolate bar with crispy bacon bits and potato chips! Can you even imagine? I took one- I think I’m afraid to even taste it. I’ve never even heard of something like this! It’s by Hammond’s out of Denver.

In other injury-related news, I was told by the pharmacy that my monthly co-pay for the Forteo injections would be $653. Um, no. I won’t go into the saga of calling my pharmacy benefits provider, but you can imagine how that went at the first level. At the 2nd level I made progress and got it down to $100 for 90 days. The orthopedist had mentioned that the reason most people don’t use this drug is the cost…

Bacon and chocolate is a surprisingly good combination.

Adding potato chips to the mix is just… blecch.

I work for a small company, and whenever it is someone’s birthday the office manager brings in treats of some sort. Today was cookies and cupcakes. I’m sorry to say I could not resist, although since it was my birthday I decided I was justified. ;)
