A former coworker of mine did it and absolutely enjoyed it. Give it a shot!

Well, that was a bit different that I expected. Not solo acoustic. Five piece electric blues, country/blues/rock band: two guitars, bass, fiddle, drums:

Three hours a day of exercise is too much for me. An hour is about my limit, except on a hiking day where I might go 4 to 6 hours, but at a measured pace.

Even things like hot yoga and pilates? They don’t wear me out like cardio does.

PG, just pace yourself and increase activity gradually. Too much, and you risk hurting yourself. I know, because it happened to me. I ramped up to 37 miles of running one week, which was too much (for ME - I know others my age or older can handle it fine). I injured myself and couldn’t run at all for three months!

I don’t know what the goal would be in doing 3 hours a day of yoga and/or pilates, or even making that a part of a 3 hour total exercise day. I have, of course, exercised (ran) up to 5 plus hours in a day, and have combined weights with running- or yoga with running- in a single day. 3 hours of exercise, even low impact, day after day is just not a good plan. Your payback wouldn’t even be that great.

Girls on the Run is a wonderful organization and I would encourage involvement. Around here, it wasn’t going to work for me because of my work schedule- most of the training happened in the afternoon.

Pizza girl, oh my, that is a lot of travel! And so many airline snacks dangled in front of you when you might be hungry. I think any amount of normal, healthy eating and consistent sleep would help you lose a few with only moderate exercise once you stop traveling like that. You are a trooper.

Well- my first exercise in over 4 weeks! Swam about 1020 meters (our pool is just short of 50 meters) and LOVED the way my Garmin 910 tracked my lengths and the distance. I had not used it for swimming before. I did OK- it always feels hard when I start back to swimming. I barely kick (use a 2 beat distance kick) so that’s good for my hip. I then did 16 minutes of aqua-jogging and stopped short of the 20 minutes I had planned because I could feel it a little bit in my hip and decided that was enough. It started raining right as I finished (not that I wasn’t wet anyway), so that was good timing. The pool has lanes marked on the bottom but no ropes, so the couple laps of backstroke I did were a little challenging since it’s easy to wind up in another lane!

Good morning.
Sabaray, I love the onion’s favorite fitness trends article…in fact i may resemble that remark ;)

Pizza Girl, I have a hunch given the variety you like and your hours-in on weekends that you might really enjoy training to be an amateur triathlete
That might give you the structure you’re looking for.

Several of the masters/elite guys on a local sponsored team here are retired. Fortunately, they get good guidance from their coach about organizing their various workout and training activities. If you’re looking to devoting a solid chunk of each day to fitness, you might find you enjoy the endurance culture. It certainly focuses the training ;)

Barring that idea, I think the best advice to give would be to have you connect with a high level and compatible trainer to help you map your goal, watch your metrics, and supply both the accountability you want and the over site that would benefit you. There are lots of online tools to do this, impemented by strength and conditioning coaches who regularly have clients in different geographic locatios.

If you decide that’s a route you want to go, let me know and I’ll see if I can get you a resource fr the search via my elite trainer friend.

Yay, MoWC! Great job!

My sixth day of working out this week, and it felt great! An hour of CrossFit. As usual, the trainer watched me closely and scaled back the intensity/duration of my workout. I was still sweating like crazy by the end. I am enjoying mixing up my slow jogging with intense strength workouts. It feels good. Next week is challenging, as I am driving up to Bar Harbor with my son on Monday. We will come back Thursday. I can run Monday and Saturday and do CrossFit on Friday (yes, there is a class on July 4th!). I should make myself run along the shore path in Bar Harbor at least one day! :)

MOWC, I’ll bet you mentally felt great after you got out of the pool - it’s a start - and a start is better than a “wait”!! Going swimming myself this afternoon but it will be a leisurely lay-by-the-pool , do a few laps , float around kind of thing!

A shortish 2+miles this morning - early, but it was heating up fast and in the sun. Followed up with some gardening and then prepared the family a brunch to get us through pool time.

Maine, for me there is nothing like running along water - it’s a must !!!

I agree, abasket. I am looking forward to running along the shore path in Cape Town, South Africa, the second week of August! (It is safe - I’ve done it once before.)

Doesn’t sound THAT challenging! Running along shore path would be great – except for dodging the blue hairs with walkers!

Running out and back along the gravel path on the east side of Jordan Pond would be pretty nice, too! My Garmin says it’s 1.8 miles from the parking lot of the Jordan Pond House restaurant to the extreme northern end of the pond. Totally flat gravel path along the edge of the lake. Heck, just running along any of the carriage roads would be awesome.

Has anyone tried those Hairfinity pills? I want to use them because my pregnancy has made my hair thinner.

Do you know if it will be safe with pregnancy?

Does it actually work?

@interesteddad, yes, I’ve run on several of the carriage roads, and hiked quite a few. I’m just not sure if my son wants to do that. I could always get up early, though! One year, I half-seriously told my husband I wanted to move to Bar Harbor just because of the running!

The challenging part will be the FOOD! Yikes. I have such a hard time restraining myself in restaurants.

Two words- blueberry beer. One of my favorite Maine things.

AnnieBeats:

Those look like they are probably pretty expensive vitamin pills. I’m guessing that hair growth is, like everything else, heavily influenced by the natural hormonal changes during pregnancy and there isn’t a lot you can do about that. Assuming they have the green light for use during pregnancy, maybe a good daily multivitamin if you think you might be insufficient.

The addtiional supplementation I would consider would be Vitamin D. Dr. Michael Holick, in his book, claims that more than 50% of babies in the US are born with vitamin D deficiency because their mothers are insufficient.

I managed to skip the beer in Maine. I try to limit my alcohol consumption to straight whisky, no mixers. That is the least bad option from a diet/nutrition standpoint. Beer and sweet mixers would be the worst. Wine somewhere in the middle, but not too bad.

Speaking of beverages. I just re-ordered the SuperStarch protein drink. I went with a tub of the vanilla. I’ve still got a few packets left and I’ll save those for travel or camping where a packet is handy. Of all the options for supplemental fuel/calories during hikes where I may be expending 1000 or more Garmin calories, this seems to work pretty well. I still eat some salted nuts but have replaced the apples with these shake drinks. Protein, salt, potassium, and slow-release glucose.

The only downside is that the fine cornstarch powder is just a complete mess from the packets. I think that a jar and a scoop will be easier to deal with.

Thank you @interesteddad!

ML, your travels sound wonderful. I am jealous and would have a very hard time with the food as well.

AnnieB, are you taking a prenatal vitamin? I promise, your hair will come back when the baby arrives.

5.8 miles today. Scheduled a fitness assessment at the gym; it’s an included service and I can also get 5 personal training sessions for $50 (introductory special) so I am going to do that. I will never do strength training unless I have it scheduled and I need a trainer to hold me accountable. I suspect the prices may increase exponentially for sessions 6 and on!

Asked for my lab tests to be sent to me and those arrived earlier in the week. Fasting glucose was 90 - can’t imagine what it was before! Total cholesterol was 243 - high. Triglycerides were 53, LDL (calculated) was 123 and HDL was 109. HDL was flagged as high. Vitamin D was 13.4 (reference 30 - 100) so insufficient.
