It would be great if you are right!

I find doctors affiliated with big research U medical centers to be more progressive (and aggressive in suggesting exercise options!) when it comes to exercise recommendations. My Ortho doc, a teaching prof, knew the latest and greatest stuff about injured knees’ rehab. I got the recommendation of my free weights routine from my gyn doc - she pulled out a bunch of reprints of some publications and gave me the ones that were appropriate. I still do those exercises. But my family docs, even the young ones, were clueless…

You’ve posted some good links, idad. I forwarded the core exercises and back information to my DH. He (the poster bad back candidate) insists on loading heavy weights on the crunching ab machine at the gym. He claims this is okay with the physical therapist he saw once or twice for his back. Sigh.

Good luck, Hopeful! Walking will always be my favorite form of exercise. I hope you can calm the back pain down, and build up your endurance!

I did a R. Cosgrove workout yesterday with both of the squats and lunges you posted video links to, idad. Today I put in 3 miles of walking outside and 3 miles of running on the treadmill. I think I’m going to take a break tomorrow–my body is telling me to take a rest.

Sigh is right. The crunching ab machine is horrible for your back. Just about the worst. Maybe EXOS – Athletes Performance could convince him? They train half of the players in the NFL draft, the US and German World cup teams, etc. They don’t do crunches! They do have some online programs:

http://www.athletesperformance.com/
http://www.coreperformance.com/

How are you finding the Drop 2 Sizes workouts? They kicked my butt.trying to keep up with them on the videos. I had to do rest rest between exercises instead of some of the “active rest” she has you do! Otherwise, I’d end up bent over panting like a dog. I might have to fire up those videos and do that program again this fall.

Something a little different for dinner tonight. I stuffed a half lemon, some garlic, and some fresh rosemary in a whole chicken, rubbed some olive oil on it, trussed it up, and stuck it on a rotisserie spit on the Weber. Should be some good eatin, for a couple of nights.

Sounds delicious!!! Leftovers would also make some tasty chicken salad!! (Use yogurt instead of mayo!!)

hopeful: You might want to see a trainer, who can instruct you on how to do various exercises and correct you if your form is wrong – which is what leads to injuries. Or see a physical therapist. The physical therapy place I went to last year specialized in sports injuries, and they had a whole gym with a range of fitness equipment in the facility. They know what exercises are good for back and knee injuries, and what to avoid, and how to do things the right way.

When you have an injury, very often doing nothing just makes things worse and makes you more prone to future injury. A PT or a trainer (or even both working together) can devise a program that strengthens the muscles around the injury, which helps prevent future injuries. They will also give you exercises to strengthen your core and improve your balance, which are both really important.

Some people, like idad, are able to watch a video and figure out what to do. Other people are like me – I’m not a kinetic learner, and I need someone right there guiding me and telling me what to do.

I don’t have the videos, but I do like the workouts from Drop Two Sizes. I’ve been doing them off and on for about a year, but they still do me in. I try to make small corrections whenever I do them now, and I definitely see improvement in my form. I’m working on the Phase II exercises now, and I’ll probably stay here for awhile. The dress size is still the same–actually, I feel like my legs are bigger now than they were a year ago, but it’s a healthy bigger (more muscles, I hope
). I was glad to see Rachael Cosgrove in the videos you posted. She looks strong!

It was so good. The rotisserie lets me get the skin really dark brown, which is hard to do with chicken because they cook so fast. I caught the drippings in a pan, deglazed it with some red wine, and made a lovely sauce. I’m afraid there won’t be any leftovers. I ate half the chicken and I’ll eat the other half tomorrow. It wasn’t one of those mutant 8 pounders…

The “ringer” in the D2S workouts is that one of the two women doing the workouts with Cosgrove is Neghar Fonooni. She was all decked out in cute Nike outfits and makeup and the unsuspecting would never see it coming. The reality is that she is an absolute beast. Fortunately, I knew that so I figured that, if I could do half the workout she’s doing, then I was OK for an ol’ (formerly) fat guy.

For those of you who, like me, struggle to do a halfway decent single leg deadlift, check out Neghar (who weighs 123) do them with 160 pounds…

Oh wow!

Or, KB swings with 105 pounds:

<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube;

And the form is impeccable.

She’s 5’2". Swinging 85% of her bodyweight.

It finally cooled off to about 75 degrees… I decided to bag my planned neighborhood run and go to bed early after doing some weights. At 3:30 am, an owl woke us up with its loud screech, and then a second one joined in! The “concert” lasted until 4 am… After that, it was hard to go back to sleep! Since sleep is essential for maintaing a healthy weight, off to maintain my weight I go!
If you are curious what it sounded like, here is a similar “song”:

<a href=“BARRED OWL AMAZING VOCALS! #WhoCooksForYou, eh?🦉 - YouTube”>BARRED OWL AMAZING VOCALS! #WhoCooksForYou, eh?🦉 - YouTube;

LOL.

Bunsen! I have that exact flavor of owl. In fact, I have a few! And yes, they love to sing rounds
Fortunately, according to mch, I can and will sleep through anything.

And Sabaray, how be we just hang out at the “cake station” for that run? :)

I wish I was from Neghar’s planet…on my planet, the gravity doesn’t allow me to single leg deadlift 160 lbs ;)

Hopeful, I had a trick knee from a car crash long ago. Used to swell all the time and could barely bend it. -40 lbs and daily walks up a steep hill for a year fixed it…doesn’t even trick out now. So don’t give up hope…just be Hopeful ;)

If you like walking, you can boost the health benefits by using trekking poles, which helps get the heart rate up and gives you better core tone from the arm movement. They call it “exerstriding.”

In my case, it helps keep me really stable, which has kept the back and knee behaving. Just a thought…maybe it would be protective for you too.

Interesting tip- pack a couple of paper plates when you travel to use as Val Slides! Saw that on facebook.

Off to 6am hot yoga, then the breakfast burrito legal seminar, then flight to PA! I shall survive!

Ha, the cake station is fine, KMC!

Off to the gym last night. 4.5 mile run and then a little “fitness challenge” in the form of Pilates type exercises. My core isn’t as terrible as I thought it was but I’m also sure my form wasn’t the best.

idad, your chicken sounds really good. Cooking around here has really suffered recently. I need to reboot my menu options and find more protein options again. Really want to lose some fat and hoping weights will also help with that.

Take your fish oil, people:

Speaking of EXOS…nice article in the Times today on the German team’s training. Equally nice is a selection of exercises with video at the end of the article.
<a href=“Train Like a German Soccer Star - The New York Times”>http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/07/16/train-like-a-german-soccer-star/

Double wow to Neghar! You get a true sense of the intended form and the purpose of doing the exercises when you see Neghar and her legs in action. Wow. Is she the “model” in the book? She has some good workout videos on youtube.

BB, your owl is asking, “who cooks for you…who cooks for you?”. We get great horned owls sitting on the local rooftops calling to one another all night. Their babies, the owlets, make a screeching noise. It is hard to sleep through!

No. Neghar is too short and muscular to be the fitness model in a Rodale book. Rodale insists that the fitness models in the books be [5’10" and rail thin](https://www.rodalestore.com/media/catalog/product/cache/4/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/d/r/drops2sizesdvd_046120_700x700_1.jpg).

Neghar was in the DVD version, which is just Rachel Cosgrove and two women doing the workouts, rep by rep, in real time with Cosgrove coaching the exercises as they go.
