We always see at least 10-20 bicyclists while driving the passes in the North Cascades, and this past weekend wasnt any different.
Its enough of an ascent in the car, I guess thats what all those gears are for!

That sounds a little frightening Nrdsb4. I’m glad you made it back safely.

Yesterday I did 3 1/4 miles running on the treadmill followed by upper body weights. Today will be a walking day–3.5 miles.

nrdsb4:

That doesn’t sound like a great trail. I’m guessing that a lot of close-in city trails would offer similar issues. I’d probably look for really popular/crowded bike paths or go a bit further out. I’ve yet to experience anything even the slightest bit shady anywhere out in the boonies in NH.

Busy week - iDad, hope you’re recovering from your pains and strains by now. KMC, enjoy your vacay - you need one after the summer you’ve had!

Switched up my running schedule a bit - got some real life coaching and a nice overhaul of my running plan from one of the trainers at the gym - so this past Saturday ran 16 miles - most I’ve ever done. Ran with two other women who are training for the same race - they are using the Galloway method so we ran for three and walked for one. Seemed to work pretty well although I have to say I like running up hills a lot more than slow running or walking. Sunday just did some stretching and walking, yesterday elliptical and bike and today ran 6 before work. The cooler weather is a real plus, that’s for sure.

You are amazing Sabaray! Really, I’m in awe!!! :)

Nrdsb4, do some searching for a park with a paved bath for bikers. Will still get you out in nature but on better surface under your wheels and hopefully with less sketchy people!!!

Nice run, sabaray! You are doing great!

Thank you, ladies. MOWC - one of the women I ran with completely reminded me of you - both in physical appearance and running experience! I am only running three days a week with cross-training three and one day of rest/stretching. I am feeling a lot better. There were a couple of runs earlier this month where I thought “I can’t do this” - but Saturday I realized that I could. I also realized that I needed to eat more - I wasn’t feeling well because I just wasn’t eating enough. Saturday I had a cheeseburger and a beer! Woo hoo!

Actually, this was a paved, dedicated bike path. It is a well known path which goes from where I was all the way to White Rock Lake in Dallas. I don’t know if any crime has ever happened on it; all I know is that although it was a gorgeous area and very smooth ride, I did NOT like seeing the single men as well as groups of men just hanging around some of the more secluded areas. Getting lost was on me, though. Since I got home, I read some reviews which referenced cars at the public park I parked at getting windows smashed in by thieves. If I ever decide to go back there I will park at some of the other parks I saw which are more exposed to public traffic and thus, less likely to be utilized by vandals.

Nrsb4 good for you for trying something new, though. Now you know what to look out for.

Can you bring along a friend? Or ride during a more busy time? Our trails are quiet M-F during the day, but active on the weekends. Any cycling groups or cycling stores nearby? You could pick their brains for ideas of where to go.

I am trying to ride my bike on short errands these days, those little two mile jaunts where I don’t have much to carry.

Lizardly, I told DH I wouldn’t go back without him or without packing heat. I’m kidding about the latter, I’m not interested in carrying even if I could get to it in time if I ever needed it.

Yes, I will be looking for other places to ride.

Sabaray, great job!

Still no go. My back and hip felt OK for most of the day. Felt fine on a little walk. So, I figured I’d try my warmup routine. First exercise felt great. Second exercise hurt. So that was the end of that. Tried intervals on the Airdyne. Second interval hurt.

Looks like I’ll be penciling walks around the neighborhood and warm up intensity Airdyne for the next couple of days.

Ouch, idad. Please be careful, and fingers crossed for your pain to go away quickly.

IDad- I hope you heal up quickly! What do you think caused it?

Thanks for the link BB - not ready to throw in the towel yet. I found a link on another site that indicated a bad hr strap. I’ve replaced the battery hoping that gives me some help! I’ve had the garmin strap for 3 years so maybe it is bad. It has a tendency to spike high hr when I first start out lately—200 plus—so maybe it is bad.

Super impressed with Sabaray!

I’d say it’s 50% - 50% that it was overuse backpacking/hiking or just a run of the mill geezer, sleep-on-it-the wrong way thing. Maybe some of both. I can’t really tell if the hip or the left lower back spasms are the root cause. They are seemingly related. It’s just one of those back things that seizes up when I move the wrong way. It’s not bad for general life – mostly just a bother in transition (from chair to standing, etc.) But, my iron-clad rule on back pain and exercise: if it hurts, don’t do it.

ohiopublic:

In my experience (and I have a lot of experience with Garmin straps), they are disposable. All of them die sooner or later. It’s some kind of internal resistance issue. You can milk a little more life out of them by religiously washing them, but, if you get a year out of one, figure it doesn’t owe you anything and replace it.

The latest Garmin strap is the best ever at avoiding the cold winter HR spikes:

http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Premium-Heart-Monitor-Strap/dp/B00BI9X1QM/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

BTW, despite the fact that the actual clip in sensor is physically interchangeable with various generations of straps, it won’t actually work properly with previous generations. There are internal differences (presumably to match the internal resistance of the specific strap). So, if you collect Garmin straps (as I do), keep the sensors and straps properly paired.

Workout video:

Here’s a nice workout video that is making the rounds here in New England. I’m gonna try this one as soon my back feels better – although I don’t think I’ll be doing the snatches with 235 lbs or the box jumps quite that high or adding chains for extra weight on the chinups!

<a href=“Julian Edelman Draft Report | Only Two Things You Can Do | CoachUp Presents - YouTube”>Julian Edelman Draft Report | Only Two Things You Can Do | CoachUp Presents - YouTube;

Anyone else up for this one? :)

For reference: Edelman was 5th in then NFL in receptions last year and is 4th all time in the history of the NFL in punt return average. I’ve seen another workout of his – running the up stairs from the Santa Monica beach. Over and over and over.

Ohio- Current intell in the running/tri world is that the Magellan strap is the best one to pair with Garmin. It’s reliable and durable. Works better than the Garmin straps- even the latest one.

Currently sitting in a presentation of our county health assessment. Some of the adult results are shocking!

Our county:

90% of adults diagnosed with diabetes classified as obese.

70% county adults are overweight or obese - Ohio 36%

6% ate 5 fruits/Vegs a day (9 recommended)

50% exercise 3 or more times a week - 25% don’t exercise at all

6% of those exercise are runners

So much sad/shocking info -Just awful!

(Also noted that while there were apples for morning treats, there were also mini cinnamon rolls and sugar full mini muffins…)

Good morning. MomWC, today and tomorrow I am in Monterey, but will also be in SF and Napa on Thurs-Monday. If I didn’t have my crazy Newfie in tow, I’d say lets meet up for a drink. But my skedder is pretty unpredictable. Eg, after diving yesterday and having her mask float out to sea, said friend’s dive instructor locked friends keys in the car…this is the kind of nonsense that seems to go on  This is the gal who was in Cinque Terre during the mudslide and coast guard evacuation in Italy  for that one I was already on the plane, but I expect the unexpected somehow when with her!

I have to plan the sharing-hotel-room thing better…cannot stay asleep past 6 a.m. And friend is the opposite…had to sneak out in the dark this am with iPad and whatever clothes I could locate to not wake her up  Tomorrow I will plan better and have gear ready to go for a walk on the beach.

Beautiful meal last night overlooking the ocean at a resort on the 17 Mile strip at Spanish Harbor.

Idad, for that back, if spasms, try naproxen and Australian Dream. I swear it works!
