Fire and rain - I’ve only used the vivofit and the mio link a couple times in the pool. Does a decent job of measuring hr. It’s the only thing that I know of that measures hr In a pool ?

It appears to be related to changes in gut bacteria that are somehow triggered by artificial sweeteners.

Thanks for the thoughts about rest days. I am definitely a just-starting-out exerciser although as someone else said I do generally keep pretty active. My goal is to be able to run two miles. Right now it takes me so long to go two miles I am not even going to say exactly but the good news is that there is lots of room for improvement, plus I do several intense sprints at the end so I am pretty wiped out by the end. I probably should look at a program like Couch to 5K but my work/life schedule is hectic right now so something simple like “2 miles every day” works. My fear is that I will schedule days off when I have time, and then end up taking more rest days because of working late or having writing deadlines to meet and either needing to work at home or being exhausted from having stayed up the night before to meet a deadline. My schedule is going to be like this for the rest of the semester but I really want to stick with exercising - I just don’t know if I should schedule days off or take them as stuff comes up.

If you have the luxury of starting from scratch and designing your own workout schedule, the number one thing I would do for your health over the long haul is not schedule running on back to back days. Mix it up. Running is very high repetitive stress and your joints will really thank you later in life for the recovery between running days now.

A number of us credit c25k with giving us the base for running. I can’t recommend it enough. I too was “active” but not athletic - I could have never started out doing 2 running miles. It’s important to build habits, running style, stamina, pacing, breathing, etc etc! I really, really, recommend it.

C25k is a great way to get started. It is very simple and really helps build your base for running. It’s an app that you can download on your phone, very easy to follow.

In my experience, I’ve been successful with exercise when I’ve scheduled it and made it a priority. Schedule your workouts, schedule your rest days. Build that consistency.

Weighed in today for the fitness challenge - over 12 weeks I’ve lost 15 pounds and reduced my body fat by 5%. Hard.

abasket, is today your special day? I think it might be! Happy Birthday!

“Weighed in today for the fitness challenge - over 12 weeks I’ve lost 15 pounds and reduced my body fat by 5%. Hard.”

Amazing! Congrats - big time - to you!!! :)

Congrats on that excellent weight and fat loss!
Marginal run in San Francisco this morning. Will report more later when I’m on better wifi.

Wow Sabaray- slim and trim!!! You must feel/look great! What nutritional habits did you change - in addition to TE fitness.

Actual bday is tomorrow. I’m a weird one in that I don’t like birthdays - seriously! - used to cry when I was little and The happy bday song was sung. Always kind of glad when the day is done! Will be heading for a day visit with my D in Columbus - perfect way to spend the day!

Thanks for remembering!!:)

MOfWC, I was in SF last week - I cannot believe people try to run on downtown streets. Ugh. The traffic and crowds are insane.

BTW, I highly recommend the downtown SF Hilton for its amazing exercise room that is equipped with Precor machines, including the latest treadmills that let you run “downhill.” Just don’t eat at their cafe; it serves overpriced, pretentious food that is actually not that good.

This event is at Westin St. Francis at Union Square. It was a mile down Market Street to Embarcadero. I had to stop a lot at lights- even before 6am. It didn’t get light (area is well lit though) until after my turnaround. Garmin didn’t lock on at Union Square and measured half a mile long in the first mile. It did ok on Embarcadero. Of course, to finish I had to run back UP Market with more traffic- cars and pedestrians. 5 miles done. Low heart rate failure.

I used to train a lot here (1998-2000) since I had a big case ending in a 5 week trial. I was much closer to Embarcadero, though. I even ran up the giant hills back then. Not now…

GPS devices have a ton of trouble in that concrete jungle! The giant hills in SF are even more intimidating than the hills I now occasionally “train” on in my hometown: Queen Anne and Capitol/First hills. Yikes!

I love Columbus, abasket - when H and I were first married we lived in German Village. Hope you have a great visit.

I think the more weight you’ve lost the harder it gets. I religiously tracked in MyFitnessPal. My carb intake was very, very low. A bread splurge was a FiberOne English muffin. Can’t think of the last time I had steel cut oats. Sugar intake was also very low. I completely stopped drinking diet soda. Water or plain iced tea. Nut milk instead of dairy. Those are the only significant changes I can think of. Really upped the exercise intensity. Calorie wise my intake was around 1200-1500 daily, except for the day of 16 miles when I had a cheeseburger and beer! Didn’t eat more because I was exercising - my one complaint with MFP is that it adds on the calories it thinks you’ve burned exercising and tells you to go ahead and eat more. Didn’t do it.

I might however have pancakes tomorrow. After I run 12. We’ll see if I feel like eating them then!

Five pound party time for Sabaray! Triple five pound party time!

We’ll see as the day goes on, but I think I’ve turned the corner on my injury. No wincing, no discomfort when I got up this morning. We’ll see how it goes throughout the day.

3.2 miles. This last week I have felt good running. Haven’t felt this good since before my 10k in May. Pretty nice. Also the weather has been perfect. For running that is.

Yay Sabaray! Those are some substantial changes. I’m so happy for your H as well. Keep it up, Sabaray family!

That sounds positive, idad. Hope the rest of your day has been pain free.

I’ll add my hand for the success of C25K. I used the app on my phone, and would definitely recommend it. It held me accountable for completing each week. Now over a year since I completed the program, I’m still running the 5K regularly, and gradually building up my pace and endurance. I also found wearing the heart rate monitor and strap helpful to understand how my body was reacting to the workouts. I was definitely not a runner when I started–I remember posting (and thinking) here that there was no way I’d run a mile without being a completely winded a red faced mess. I still get the red face, but the breathing has become much easier.

3.1 miles of treadmill/running and upper body weights for me today. And a shortish walk this morning.

Another 5K hilly neighborhood rehab walk before dinner. No discomfort all day (so far) in the hip. Just a mild twinge in the back while bending in the kitchen. Did a little heavy weight lifting (not planned) to clear off the condo deck to be stained tomorrow. No problem.

The walking is good. At least it’s a little physical exercise instead of sitting around like an cripple. :)

I still have no idea if this was a hip problem causing lower back spasms or a back problem causing hip pain or two completely separate issues.

Glad that the issue is resolving on its own! :)

wow, great job Sabaray. :)

interesteddad, hope you feel better. Injuries suck when you get so much pleasure out of working out.

I can really appreciate the vicious cycle. The less I exercise, the more my joints get creaky and stiff. Really shows the importance of doing something to get moving.
