Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Today’s was my best workout in the past week. Topsy-turvy schedule lately. Ducks, geese, squirrels, no bunnies.

Awesome, Nrdsb and Deborah! I hope that I get home at a reasonable time to be able to do something meaningful exercise-wise.

Congrats, Nrdsb. You will keep adding and improving. I’ve spent a lot of time at White Rock Lake! Great that you did your 20 miles. Also, way to go, Deborah!

Ran 3 1/2 and then went to the Underpants Run. They chipped timed it (it’s really more of a short parade (about a mile) than a run) this year since they were trying to set a world record for largest underpants run. Not sure if we made it or not, but I did participate this year. Last year I just watched. My outfit was boring, with the hideous white Fruit of the Loom undies I bought at the drugstore the other night when our luggage didn’t get here OVER my Oiselle running shorts (the tight kind with about a 3-4 inch inseam). I bought the undies in the wrong size the other night in my exhaustion, so they are huge, but worked fine for this purpose. The outfits were as outrageous as ever, and it was fun.
The Japanese racing team was there again in their loincloths.

I bought some strange new shoes at the Expo. They are Swedish- as was everyone working in the booth and are called Swiss Engineering Cloud Surfers and have some weird symbols for the company logo. The Hoka booth was not offering any break on price and I can do much better online or at home, so I passed on those.
WildChild got the new Garmin 920 which everyone is coveting and is only available right now here in Kona, apparently.

Nice workouts, Nrdsb and Deborah. And cute outfit, MoWC

Yesterday I ran 4.5 miles and walked 2. Today, only time for walking 2 with H.

Yea Nrdsb4!!! You hit a milestone. And to put it in perspective, think of all the places you drive to that are 20 or so miles away. You just rode there :)! Just wait until the time comes that when you are actually driving somewhere, you take a bike route instead of the “normal” roads ;).

Nrdsb4, great job. You pushed though those last couple of miles, now that you know you can do it, it will be so much easier the next time.

MOWC, as always love the updates from Kona. Sounds like a crazy fun time. I’ll be trying to follow on Saturday.

3.8 miles today. Running a 5k next week with my H and my D. Should be fun, looking forward to it.

Why I love this thread - everyone is so darn good at cheerleading!!! It’s like we were all at the end of those 20 miles Nrdsb4 high-fiving you!!! Really, what you said is so true. A few weeks ago, a couch potato. Today, 20 miles. And Michael is right - picture a place it takes you 20 miles to drive to - you just rode your bike there!! FANTASTIC!

Great job all other exercisers! Running or whatever! It would seem that fall is a great time most everywhere to get out and get some exercise. In the midst of a room redo and some painting but managed to take a break and get in a 30 minute run.

Nrdsb4. - you made my day. Nothing like feeling that euphoria after achieving a milestone that at one time didn’t seem possible. Proud of you.

Thanks. It’s not all roses around here. She’s having a pretty bad meltdown because she didn’t bepring enough of her nutrition powder mix (something her coach should have worked out with her before she left for Kona) and isn’t receptive to alternatives. Her father said this is sort of normal race week behavior for her and part of why they aren’t thrilled with the semester off from medical school to go pro. WildChild is working hard on the options, and I think I actually solved it for her, but he’s ready to kill her. Right now my H, WC and Em are working on her bottle cages on her tri bike and building up WC’s time trial bike in the middle of our condo living room. WC has been zipping around on his mountain bike, including some tough trails and got up to 50 mph. I’m thrilled with that…

My gosh, I have the hugest lump in my throat from all the nice posts. Thanks you guys. Recently someone posted that he felt derided and criticized a while back on this thread, and I just cannot imagine that could be true, based on what I’ve seen the last month or so here.

It’s really cool seeing how people here set and achieve goals; some are set by people with physical ailments which make their achievements that much more inspiring. Others are really pros, and I bet there are a lot of people “out there” who don’t realize that these amazing feats are being accomplished by people well north of 40.

There were a lot of people buzzing by me today at White Rock. But I’m not normally very tough, and pressing through those last miles when I was pretty gassed did make me feel inspired to keep setting goals. Gosh, I’d sure love to get off my small dose of BP medication. Now THAT would be something worth celebrating.

50 mph… Holy Kamehameha! I can see why you are so thrilled. Fingers crossed that everything will be ok for Em.

Ran a teeny-tiny bit after work. I swear I spent 4 hours waiting for/riding the bus today! Veep was in town, and naturally, the traffic was in a major funk. Off to get some calories. :)

Nrdsbr- the poster that was upset about the thread really misinterpreted something. We do some teasing here occasionally since many of us have been here awhile- and poke fun at ourselves, too.

WC is out NIGHT mountain biking on that tough trail. He has a strong light, but I think it’s stupid to be out there alone. I think we’ve solved Em’s nutrition problem. The underpants run missed the world record by 50 participants.

MOWC, 50 mph on a bike, just the thing to trigger a parent’s protective clutch reaction lol! Hitting 50 is kinda like the bicycling equivalent of breaking the sound barrier. Hope everything works out with Em getting back into her race mindset groove. The last thing she needs is the stress of feeling like part of her “system” of race nutrition has fallen apart.

Just found out that one of the instructors at my daughter’s spinning studio is competing at Kona in the men’s masters division. Small world!

Nrdsbr, how wonderful that the cycling has worked out so well for you! That had to be a great feeling to really challenge yourself and be successful. I’m so glad you’ve joined this thread. I can’t wait to see what else is in store for you.

Rough day for me yesterday. Had Pilates, got a pep talk from my running mentor, then looked at the weather - rain for most of the weekend, H decided he was taking an impromptu trip out of town, work is insane! and tomorrow is 20 miles. I can do it and I will do it. As I’ve probably mentioned ad nauseum, we have two large dogs who need exercise and that’s my job. They are challenging to handle when I haven’t run, much less after a long run. But, my wonderful children both volunteered to help - SabaD offered to drive home just for the day and SabaS immediately said he would handle them because they wanted me to not be so stressed about everything AND they wanted me to follow my plan. Both of them have been so amazingly supportive and encouraging - such a great feeling to get that from your kids.

So, send me some good karma for a long run in the rain. It could run on race day, so I just have to do it.

Good luck to our triathletes! And 50 mph! Wow!

^^^^50 mph on a bike-unreal. I’d be too terrified to feel proud, LOL.

Good luck on your long run today, sabaray.

A couple of observations from the past few weeks:

On a dedicated bike and run trail, NOT a city road:

1)Why is that guy biking toward me in my lane when the correct lane is empty?!
2)Why are those ladies walking toward me in my lane when THEIR lane is empty?
3)I’m calling “On your left!” but you’ve apparently got your music up so loud, what’s the point?
4)You just whizzed by me on my left IN my lane and didn’t let me know. WHY?
5)You’re riding a bike with a cigarette hanging out of your mouth?! Wow! And I’ve seen several of you this month!

6)LOVE seeing all the cycling folks and runners sitting at the outdoor cafes enjoying a beer on a cool, sunny day after they’re done. Wish I liked beer, because it looks so good!

LOL, have a good day, folks.

Sabaray, sendin ya the rain dance mojo! Nrdsb4, kudos on the ride milestone!

MomWC…we want pictures of you FOL fashion faux-pas

Re race week jitters…totally different in a way, but similar…mcson has come to notice what we call the “opening week meltdown” phenom in his gf, whose a talented director. Its kinda cute, because he and gf’s BFF regularly strategize and schedule to be “life support” during this phenom. Its crazy, because she’s absolutely fabulous and always hits the mark, but it really wrings her out, the emotions leading up to pulling it off. I think it might be a characteristic of the profoundly talented actually ;)

I have a very talented pal who in her younger days worked with me at a large news outlet. I knew she was going to go somewhere because when she’d be breaking a big story she’d literally make herself sick with worry right up to deadline  Her intensity is what drove her ultimate success in her field.

I’m sure the same is true for WCs gf. Sendin you the mojo for a great time, ultimately, despite any high drama :)

“For some reason I was really emotional about it for about 15 minutes-maybe just due to pure exhaustion. I got home and had some eggs and sliced tomatoes and took 2 Aleve tablets because I’m already stiff/sore.”

I completely understand this feeling! Congrats!!

I totally get riled up when people can’t follow the marked lane system - the indoor track I use in the winter has 3 lanes - walking, jogging, running. Marked appropriately in a few different spots. Amazing how many people ignore the lane usage or just don’t care! Or the people who insist on taking up two lanes (or 2 1/2) so they can walk side by side with their walking buddy. Ugh! Fine if there is no one else on the track, but otherwise…NO!

MOWC, hoping for a better day mentally along with physically for Emily, WC and their loving parental support. :)

Sabaray, maybe the rain will hold off! Hoping it’s a gentle rain as opposed to more than that. AWESOME support from your family - it really makes the difference!

Sabaray- good luck with the 20. That’s a milestone!
Woke up at 3, as usual, so here I am. will head out to run around 5:30.

Speaking of feeling emotional–I had a crappy experience in yoga today. I went to an all-levels flow class this morning with my D, who is at an advanced level. (Seem like everyone else in the class was at her level and the same age.) During one of the postures where I was having trouble, the instructor came over and gave me another posture to do–which was easy, even for me.

I was totally mortified by being singled out and hated doing something so much easier. I wasn’t having trouble with the posture everyone else was doing, I wasn’t moving as quickly as everyone else–and I was fine with that. I usually leave yoga feeling wonderful, but today, I felt like crying. Mostly I felt old and unfit and ready to bag the whole attempt at yoga. Clearly my D thought I was nuts. We talked on the way home and came up with a plan. I am determined to master those poses-- according to my D that is not an unreasonable goal for me. D suggested that I do some private sessions with one of the instructors as well as continue with regular classes. That made lots of sense to me as I am not coordinated and need to do exercises again and again before I get it right. Also decided not to focus on the negatives (like feeling old and unfit) and to focus on achieving the goal. OK–end of my feel-sorry-for-myself rant.

Love reading about everyone’s accomplishments. Saba–hang-in there. You’ve got great kids!! Sending out no rain wishes!! Nrds: nice work. Keep it up. Good luck to all of you in Kona.

I’m hoping for good weather too–it’s my H’s birthday and we’re surprising him with a clambake on the beach. We can do it inside if it doesn’t work
