Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

BTW, my earlier post should have said “we give pressors.”

Just came back from 1.5 hour bike ride. Beautiful weather, with lots of people riding, walking, jogging.

Also love the concept of a family 5K. Cool!

I did do a 10k before I did a 5k. I have a say that an organized run is not what motivates me but both races I have done are because it’s what others are doing.

My D said I was shuffling and that I should pick up my knees when I run. That by shuffling I am stopping the running motion and slowing myself down. It’s what her CC coach told her. And to try and land on my midfoot instead of my forefoot. I tried it today and could run faster. My lungs were having a problem though and now I need to work on that now lol!

To answer Abasket’s question, we ran the Runners World Half Festival in Bethlehem Pa. It was a fun, very well organized event. Ran though the old Bethlehem Steel Plant and downtown Bethlehem. Scenic but hilly. Really nice shirt for both men and women that actually fits!

3 miles treadmill tonight. Last mile 5:56.
Starting track workouts in 2 weeks.

Pizzagirl- I want to caution you about your plan to really dive into running once you retire. Running does NOT lend itself to the sort of fast ramp up that you have done with some of your other classes and activities with less impact. You WILL get hurt. You can’t just decide to run 5 miles a day because you have the time. Runners who ramp up mileage- even those who have been running for a long time- have a high injury rate (as iDad will remind us). Running is huge impact on your body. I think you have potential as a runner, but injury is the biggest risk.

3.2 miles after work and then played on my basement jungle gym straps a little. Taking it easy this week to recover from the race.

Some interesting data from my race. From 10K on I passed about 900 runners, including 500 women. I moved up 3 places in the age group.

Wow! What would be interesting is how many men did you pass up???

That’s a ridiculous number - fantastic!

Well, my math would indicate about 400 men that I passed (roughly).

Thank you, MOWC. I absolutely would do Couch to 5k-ish stuff again and potentially ramp up from there. I don’t have the stamina or endurance to run far! I’m cardio-deconditioned compared to where I was last year.

Congratulations on the family race, deb922. I sympathize with getting the lungs to match what the legs can do. That’s always been my challenge too.

I flew north today. Although tired and feeling like it was the longest day ever, I went out for a 4.5 mile run in the late afternoon. I stopped a few times to snap photos of the leaves (beautiful!). I’m in northeastern Wisconsin where it was maybe 55 degrees–bliss! The problem I had with the cooler temps was at the end of the run when I slowed to cool down with a walk. Brrr. I had to jog slowly to stay warm enough in the capris and tee that had been pretty good for the running.

That would be 400 men hanging their heads at being simultaneously chick’d and geezer’d. :)

Today was the hilly hike day for me. If I miss the bus, I might as well spend the 20 minutes walking instead of waiting for the next one! My manager gave me a new assignment, so I will be really busy in the next few days!

Cheers to hilly walking.
It was nice yesterday not to have to essentially climb half a dead tree to get on the trail!
But sad to return and look at the cover on the pool as I came down the hill…I really miss the post-hill aquajogging. I didn’t think it was technically doing much but in retrospect I suspect it was. I can feel the difference after a mere month.

I keep looking at those crazy “snow domes” you can get that allegedly let you stay open in the winter but common sense says even if they work, it could be disastrous in these parts with the snow load we get…and not very sensible to keep a pool open and running and keep the dome inflated in sub-zero weather for one person’s half hour jog around the pool :)

Plantmom, what a nice run! I never understood why athletes were often seen throwing on an extra layer after an athletic event - until I started running! Once you stop and barely start to cool down you need that extra layer to aid with the cool down process so you don’t get chilled!

Enjoy the nice cool temps! The next week looks very pleasantly fall like here - temps ranging from upper 50’s to 70 for the next week - crossing fingers that that sticks!

I had a good 4 mile run last night, although I had the opposite problem of PlantMom. Temp was low 50s but it was windy. My hands always get cold so I wore long sleeves to be able to pull them down and use the beloved thumb holes. Great idea at the beginning of the run, but I got way too hot pretty early on. It was still a good run but I would have been better off to run in a short sleeve shirt and wear gloves. It might look ridiculous but it would have worked better for me.

Tonight is a workout at the gym with my trainer.

Deb922-your family 5K sounds fun. We get to do races as a family occasionally and it’s always a blast. Our kids are pretty far away these days so any chance to do something as a family is special. I completely agree with not liking the feeling of holding others up. I always prefer to just run at my own pace and meet up at the finish line.

Sabaray-I hope your colonoscopy went well today. No fun at all, but it’s good to just get it done.

MOWC-your stats from your half marathon are pretty impressive. To pass that many runners in the 2nd half is pretty incredible. It really speaks to your many years of training and how well you know how to pace yourself.

BunsenBurner-Good luck with the new assignment! Nice work with the hilly walk. Our daughter just moved to Seattle in August having lived here in the Midwest all her life. She loves it there but running and walking on the hills is quite a new experience for her after living in the flat farmland. It’s a whole different level of workout!

kmcmom13-our next door neighbors had one of those snow domes for their pool the first year after they moved into the house. I think it was the novelty of having a pool that prompted them to buy it. After that first winter they never put it back up again so I think that the expense of keeping it up ended up not being worth it for the amount of use they got out of the pool in the winter. It did look fun, though!

Deb922- Sounds like a good family race! We’ve done those in the past- with mixed results. Daughter always felt too slow compared to the rest of us, and one Thanksgiving (2006 or 7) we missed her finishing the 5K because an out of shape WildChild tried to run with the leaders and had an asthma attack and was getting a breathing treatment in the ambulance when she was finishing.

C3Baker- good run! My stats are impressive in that they are so unusual (especially for me). Normally in my races I am pretty sure I can’t complete one more mile, and I often watch other runners stream past ME! I figure I probably passed about 1000 runners in the first half of the race, too, since I started pretty far back in my corral. It was truly a pleasant surprise to feel in control for the whole race. I love the finisher medal, too. The tshirt is pretty awful. Short sleeved tech shirt (the vendor screwed up and didn’t do the long-sleeved shirts that were promised) and navy blue.

Yeah for fall!!! Had a beautiful, leisurely run tonight - about 3 miles - really perfect conditions - a little sun, no wind, cool, leaves crunching under feet…

Enjoy, abasket! Really, really yucky rain hit our neck of the woods. The leaves in the ground quickly turned to slimy, dangerous mush.

MOfWC - that was a perfectly executed race! Hope you had a wonderful time with your D and your friends. I really wished i were there. Next time! With all the hills here I have been battling lately, I began to entertain the idea of running the Monkey or something similarly crazy. Now, if only I had a crystal ball to predict what kind of workload I would get…

Wish I would remember to turn on my pedometer when I walk. Went for another long walk on a walking trail with my neighbor today. Yay.

Thanks, Bunsen. Wish you could have joined us. It’s a good group.

0 miles turned into 2 after work. Felt better having done it, although it got dark on me before I finished.

Tonight’s workout–45 minutes of solid polka-ing in dance class! Good aerobic exercise and fun, too. With a good partner, you feel like you’re barely touching the ground. :)
