Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Trainer had me do a new exercise on Wednesday and I’m sure someone here knows the name. Start in a plank, go up on one hand, then the other (so you’re at the top of a push up), then back down on the first arm, then the second. I barely managed to do three on each side and am still sore! Anyone have a name for these?

I told him I really want to focus on core work over the next few months. We have plans for a So Cal vacation the first week of March, and I’m thinking I want to try stand-up paddle boarding, so I really, really need to work on my core. He’s also going to loan me his balance board.

Teri- the Mio Link is a sensor on your arm and works well. It’s what I use now instead of a strap.

Lunges, and planks, and KB, oh my!

Some of you guys are crazy fit.

Going to see how crowded White Rock Lake bike trail is on a weekend today. If it’s a pain, I’ll only do an hour. It’s going to hit a record temp today in Dallas. Allegedly the high will be 90 degrees. I’m really sick of the heat.

I use the Mio Link, too. But I’m intrigued by this upgrade to the Mio Fuse.

Last long run is done! 23.75 miles. Cold, beautiful morning…saw the stars and the sunrise. Absolutely gorgeous and I felt great. Having friends to run with has made the biggest difference.

Sabaray - yay!!! You are ready! Now, go easy and taper well. :)

I don’t think they have a name (“plank to push up”?), but they are brutal. For a “fun” variation, when you are at the top position, walk your hands out in front of you as far as you can go and then back. Then, down to the plank to start all over!

The craziest variation I’ve ever tried was in the iPod nazi “amazing abs” program. Exactly as you describe. Start in a plank position, but palms flat on the floor. Instead of going up one arm at a time, “pop” up to a push up position with both arms simultaneously, not moving the palms:) You don’t even know how to begin or what muscles to use to initiate the movement. Crazy hard. Needless to say, I’ve not pencilled this one in my workouts!

Basement for me last night. Single leg dead lifts. TRX/Jungle Gym push ups. DB front squats. 3-pt rows. The DB front squats were really good. Two 35 lb DBs held up at my shoulders, next to my ears.

Hi everyone. Forgot my password for awhile and finally today entered my top eight or so passwords until it worked.

I’ve been biking and walking/jogging this fall. Struggling with weight maintenance. Can anyone recommend a source for speed walking? I watched a YouTube and tried to emulate the steps today and did 4.46 miles in 45.14 minutes so a great outcome I thought for a first time

Well done everyone on the continued fitness work

Nice to see you post, Busyparent. Great job on the speed walking!

Well, so much for my bike trail on a Saturday morning. There were so many people there on a beautiful morning that it was just too much stress trying to weave in and out of the crowds. I did 30 minutes, then threw in the towel. Just wasn’t fun.

Oh well, live and learn.

Sabaray- wow! Did your training program call for that distance? I’ve never run more than 21 (and in recent years, 18) in preparation for a marathon. You pretty much did it! Way to go.

Amazing, just really amazing. Congrats!

I think my longest run in training was 22 or 21 miles. I say Sabaray is ready! :)

I saw this in action last night and was very intrigued:

The biggest issue with touchscreens is how they perform in rainy weather. Is iwatch going to be waterproof?

I hope I’m ready!

I had every intention of following the MarathonRookie program that BB recommended, and in fact, started with that. Then I started working with the Pilates instructor, who has also run multiple marathons(including Boston twice). She did not think all of the weekly runs were a good use of my time and joints, so she redesigned a schedule for me. I run 6 miles on Tuesday and Thursday, then on Saturday, alternate lower mileage runs (10-15) with higher mileage (18 and up). She is a huge proponent of the Galloway method and my group has been using that for the longer runs. Today we ran for 5 minutes and walked for a minute until mile 18 when we just ran. Galloway wants you to do several runs over 20, as I’m sure you know, but I only had time for 2. They felt good, though, so I’m pretty pleased with how the switch in training went. I am actually faster.

I was just thinking today of switching back to the Galloway method. I ran really well and more importantly felt really well when I was using it.

That is so great sabaray! When is the marathon? 2 weeks I’m guessing.

My only hesitation with the Galloway method now is that the weather is getting cold and how the walking was going to work with the colder weather. It seems perfect when the weather was like today, mid 50’s. I really want to continue running outside this winter, here’s hoping its a better winter than last year.

3 miles today. Done

Probably 3 weeks out.

Fitbit is coming out with its own watch/GPS/heart rate monitor, too: <a href=“Brookstone puts up pre-order page for Fitbit Surge before it's been announced - The Verge”>http://www.theverge.com/2014/10/25/7068971/brookstone-leaks-fitbit-surge

Good to see you back BusyParent - that sounds like a very good speed walk pace to me!

Sabaray, I love your attitude. You seem to be so doing this at the right time for you. Sounds like your group got a very early start this morning! And I agree the 26 is going to be a piece of cake for you - you should feel really, really proud.

Going to look up the Galloway method.

sabaray, you are so ready! I can’t wait to read your race report.

I’ve started off using the Marathon Rookie plan, but I wonder if the Galloway would be better. I used the Galloway plan for 5k & 10K races, I just didn’t do any walking. I’ll definitely need to walk for the marathon.

busyparent, that’s some fast walking!
