Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Plantmom, good job being patient - I’m glad you went to the doc and are trying to be a “good girl” and follow his take it easy advice for a bit. You get back to where you were!

Bromfield, I’m liking the spinning as a good alternative and sub-in for when I can’t run outside - and honestly, I’m finding I like the variety. Today was the first day I tried to truly follow the instructor and turn up the resistance for the WHOLE ride up the hill - it was tough and I was huffing and puffing, but I made it through!!! No cycling shoes yet, but I did order two new pairs of appropriate shorts for all my fitness activities - love my shorts!!!

33 inches of snow! YIKES. I don’t care how light it is - that’s 33 inches of snow!!!

I’ll look ridiculous whining now, but am totally depressed at the news that they are calling for us to get anywhere from 6-12 inches on Sunday. Ugh. Really, really, UGH. Yesterday it was 36 degrees and raining - melting SOME of the snow we had. Today the temp dropped and all that melting is now extremely SLICK pavement everywhere. I mean, I have to walk the dog while crunching through the neighbors lower yard - I’d need skates for the pavement!

Michael, will this storm get you some Cross country snow??? Are you in NJ??? My husband used to get paid to cross country ski as part of his way to monitor the park district he works for. We used to go on our own some but I haven’t gone for years.

Thanks, MOfWC! I feel so much better after reading your post! Off to shoe shopping.
…
“…NOT great traction so not for wet surfaces.”

Oh bummer. Our surfaces are wet 90/% of the time. :frowning:

Oh! And speaking of new shoes, it’s on my list to go look for some tomorrow!!! Before the snow hits.

The On Cloudsurfers are really good treadmill shoes, though.

Oh, maybe I need 2 pairs then!

Off to surf for those Cloudsurfers.

Abasket, I live in PA, just outside Philadelphia. Right now we are up in the Poconos for the weekend but even up here there’s not enough natural snow on the ground for me to xcountry ski! The word is, though, that the Phila,Delphic region is going to get hit with ,a major storm Sunday night into Monday.

Bromfield, I was late for dinner when I posted my response to you so I rushed a bit and left out some stuff. Part of the key is to modify your resistance training as you age to better meet your needs both physically and in terms of life’s demands. In my 20’s, my lifting routines were 2 hours long with heavy weights, low reps, all the time, and at least 2 exercises and 7-10 sets per body part. Today, that kind of routine would probably wreak havoc with my elbow and shoulder joints and tendons. As we age, those kinds of stresses are less tolerated. Today, my routine consists off more moderate weights, higher reps and a max of 6 sets per body part, In addition, I’ve worked in a lot of body weight suspension training and multi-plane functional movement training. In addition to the benefits of traditional weightlifting, the body weight and functional movement training help me to avoid injuries and engage in activities of daily living effectively and efficiently.

Free weights routine - check.
Hoka Bondi - check.
Brooks Launch - check.

On Cloudsurfing… had to pass. Sigh. The reviews all say it runs narrow. Too bad for folks with wider flippers like me.

(And a bonus - a $400 pair of brand new JCs for $40 from RealReal). I feel so much better now!

I wish that snow you are getting Abasket would trend north, we need it and would love fresh powder. We got a bit on Thursday but we could definetely use more.

I tried to run outside yesterday but the plowed road was an icy mess. I had to turn around, even with spikes on it was not safe :frowning:

My H and I along with some friends are going XC skiing today. I’m very excited.

I bought my H a pair of Brooks GTS 14 for $67, I might have picked up a pair for myself. It was a really good price

LOL Bunsen. Good work.
Deb- good price!

Good morning. We’re set to get the snow here too…I won’t complain, we’ve had a light winter so far…but with mch laid up, I’d really rather not have to rake the roof! I’ve proven time and again I am not coordinated on the ladder with a roof rake!

Speaking of mch…idad you’d asked about surgery. As it turns out from yesterday’s visit to the specialist, mch was minimizing his fracture a bit. While its only the tibia as opposed to the fibula, its oblique, and doc sez its a really close call on needing the plate or not, and that a different doc might disagree with his approach to try non-invasive healing first.

Doc says AT LEAST six weeks immobilized, which means no driving etc. for a good while. He’s only tentatively clearing him for the cruise, and is giving him his own old boot as a “snorkling throw away” and has suggested that I hire a jeep or dune buggy if possible to get mch to the waters edge or pontoon to keep him from trying to walk in the sand with his boot.

Fortunately, doc is both a good guy and a diver and seems to get that mch is really really determined for reef life outings  Bless him

Deb922, you’re MORE than welcome to take our snow…!!!

I wish I felt more comfortable buying running shoes online - I’m still not fully confident of the type of shoe I need and what to look for - I think I will at least go to the running store today, see what they have, LISTEN to what they say about what I need and then either buy a pair there or at least leave knowing what I need to look for online. I think my running stance/style has changed some since I first started and I have to admit that the last couple of pairs I bought on my own were not “perfect” for me.

So far so good for Hoka Stinson ATR womens (dark purple- I know, had to add this). Instead of ‘no pain no gain’, it is ‘no pain and gain’.

10 miles with my daughter for the first run together since we were in Toronto in October. We ran at her MAF (low heart rate pace) so it was a 2 hour run (12 minute pace). It felt good. I had to hold back a little, which was good for me. She wanted to do 8. I insisted on 9 and we ran 10. That’s how running goes! It was 28-35 degrees, cloudy, no wind. I wore a lot of stuff.
I stopped at Dunkin afterwards (I know, I know) and chatted in line with a former NFL coach- Les Steckel. One of my facebook friends said he was terrible. I’m not shy…

That’s a great morning MOWC! Life’s short - enjoy that Dunkin every once in a while!

“It felt good” - yay!

Did a TRX circuit class this AM that was really tough but felt great. There’s so much snow here that there’s no place to walk outside. I went to check the high school track but it’s still a mess. Might head to the gym later today and get on the Cybex arc machine. My real challenge will be avoiding Super Bowl food–we go to a neighbor’s house to watch the game and I’m bringing healthy stuff–cucumber kimchi–might be the only thing I can eat.

M&K: is TRX an example of bodyweight suspension training? I usually do a circuit class 1x a week and when I workout with my trainer (2x a week) we usually start by doing 10-15 minutes of TRX.

FYI - there are some nice Hokas on sale at 6PM!

Bromfield, yes TRX is an example of body weight suspension training. There are several companies that make similar equipment but TRX was the first to take the concept and develop it for group fitness classes. My personal preference is for the TRX over the other brands of suspension training but regardless of whose equipment you choose, suspension training is just so versatile in terms of the range of movements you can do and the ability to tailor the resistance demands to any level of ability and strength. It also provides a great tool for multi-planar functional movement and strength training.

Well, I finally got to use my xcountry skis. There still isn’t enough enough on the trails to ski them without fear of scoring the bottoms of the skis on debris, etc, but the place we are staying has a vey large lake frozen over about a foot thick, with 10 inches of snow on top. It was great (except for the 30 mph winds in the middle of the lake) and I love the new skis! Finally!

So, went running shoe shopping today. I was actually a little disappointed in the selections once we decided what I needed (neutral). The best bets were these two pairs, but I wasn’t fully sold on either though more confident on the Brooks:

http://www.zappos.com/brooks-ghost-7-hawain-blue-eclipse-lime-ponch

The mizunos felt a little narrower - which was fine - but more firm in the heel which I wasn’t sure I wanted - didn’t quite feel as naturally comfortable. The Brooks have a wider toe box - which I don’t really need - but felt a bit more “clunky”.

I feel like Deborah is a Mizunos fan. Any other suggestions for me as I head to Zappos and 6pm to look around a bit???

The Ghost 7 is a good shoe. I would recommend it.
