Yes, definitely some folks here have tried the Galloway method. I can’t seem to be disciplined enough to “allow” myself to walk for a minute - I really should give it a try though! I have a bad habit of saying, “I’ve only run 3 minutes! I’ll just go 5 more…” and so on and so on! Probably would help with increasing distance though for sure.
I believe it was PlantMom who really took to the Galloway method. It is a very good way to increase your distance and keep from wearing yourself out too much in your runs. It has many, many advocates. I did a very successful (sub 4:30) marathon using it (9/1) in 2001 where my longest training run was 12 miles. The marathon was a last minute decision. I’ve tried to make myself do it in recent years, but I haven’t been successful. My son in law uses it faithfully.
Yeah, I can’t help feeling like it’s “cheating.” But I sure feel good…I’m going to have to get over that cheating feeling.
I used to do that back in the days when I used to “run.” I never minded that “cheating feeling.”
No “run”! (you have it in quotations - that’s what I’m referring to) If you are not walking, you ARE running! Credit where credit is due. You don’t have to be the fastest or go the farthest, but take credit for the run - no matter the pace!
I do the Galloway method. 3/1. Don’t feel guilty at all. It’s a great way for me to increase my distance. I don’t do it when I run races, I try and run the whole distance and have been mostly successful so far.
Hey, I didn’t start running until I was 50. I figure I’m way ahead of people on the couch and it’s better to get my heart rate up than walking. Although I liked walking and can walk for a long ways, I feel stronger running and feel less flabby lol!
I found that although my weight is around the same as it was before I started running, things fit better around the middle and in my arms mostly. I do have a bit of the middle age creep but am trying to mitigate that but it’s really hard sometimes.

Who’s going to be the first to buy one?
I read that this morning and I want one! I just bought a new Mio Fuse to go with my Garmin 220, though! I think I’ll wait until some more colors come out and the bugs are worked out. It sounds perfect, though.
Hi, just checking in and happened to see my name up top. I checked out Galloway on the suggestion of a friend who has done well with the method. After injuring my ankle over Christmas I needed to ease back into running, and this seemed like a good way to start. I adopted a 3:1 run:walk interval, and have gone to 3:1 slow: slower running now. I’m back up to 4-6 miles, and that’s a good place for me. I’m currently working on getting the slow running a bit faster (for me!). I feel no guilt about the walk intervals, but it does seem more difficult on the leg muscles to add the constant re-starts into the run if my whole 3:1 cycle spans only two minutes. Better to do 3 minutes running and 1 minute walking imo. I think Sabaray built up to her long distances using Galloway, right?
I just came back from a long weekend in SW Florida. Lots of different fitness options with beach running (hot!), beach walking, paddle boarding on the Gulf (fun but hard on my ankles), swimming, and kayaking. Today I’m home and took a short bike ride. Tomorrow my youngest comes home for a few weeks, so doubtless I’ll be back in the gym.
My most recent dilemma is about sun protection. I’ve been trying out long sleeve shirts–rash guards–for hiking. I know there’s plenty of attire with loose fitting, and vented blouse tops, but I’m hunting for something tight and somewhat breathable–but with good sun protection. The rash guard shirts for surfing are okay, but not very breathable. They’re much cooler when they’re wet, but I will be hiking. Plus, they tend to pill with the constant rubbing of a day-pack. Any suggestions? I am turning into leather lady, I worry, with just high SPF sunscreen combined with sleeveless shirts.
Jumping in here re: the Galloway Method – I’ve been doing it for over a year. I have an interval timer that clips to my waistband. I’m regularly going 4.5 - 5 miles, which I could never do if I ran non-stop. Also, I only run every other day, which I figure is easier on my aging body. Nope, don’t feel guilty.
Today’s exercise was playing 18 holes of golf, walking with a push cart. Definitely tired when I got home. Fun time, though!
That new Garmin looks sweet. Definitely would like one.
I used Galloway for my marathon last year - 4/1 ratio. When I joined up with some other folks during training, they were using the method so I just picked up with them. It is a good way to build up mileage. However, I seem to do better when I just run - it is hard for me to walk then run - takes me a while to get back up to speed. I prefer running at a steady pace and picking up when I want to, so that will be my plan for the fall. I feel like I have a better base now than I did last year.
@PlantMom - a friend and I were just talking about the sun protection issue. She has purchased several items from Coolibar and has been very pleased with them. Perhaps they would have something suitable.
Dog walking today, no other exercise.
Personal training today–wore me out. Lots of TRX work. After training, I did an hour on the Cybex Arc (elliptical) machine.
@Plantmom I’ve seen solar protective clothing for women at REI and LLBean. Don’t know if they have what you’re looking for, but it’s worth a try to check out the websites.
Just an FYI - REI is having a sale soon, if not already. I have some of their SPF camp shirts which I used for hiking in HI. They are comfy and feel better suited for dryland activities than rash guards.
Basement for me. Slinging a few weights around! The single leg deadlifts make my glutes sore…
:Plantmom: I couldn’t handle rash guard shirts in hot weather. Two stretchy tight clingy. Just simple long sleeve tech t-shirts are better I think.
I’ve been wearing Jeff Probst Survivor style shirts that I got last year for camping. Here’s the [women’s version](http://www.exofficio.com/products/details/womens-bugsaway-halo-check-long-sleeve-shirt-f14)
They are functional. Loose fitting, ventilated, sleeves that roll up or down. I got the versions with the fancy factory bug repellent treatment, but you could also apply your own. Where you live, I wouldn’t set foot on a hiking trail without bug repellent clothing. Heck, I won’t set foot on a hiking trail where I live without it.
You have a much more serious sun problem. I stopped wearing sunscreen because it’s simply impossible to get sunburned in NH. Haven’t used any sunscreen all last summer and never got burned at all. Only tanned very slowly over time. I’d burn in a hour where you live.
This is what I have:

Gertrude, I use the Galloway training plans for all my races. I like his schedule of workouts the best of all the plans I’ve tried. My first year of running I did them with no walk breaks for 5 & 10ks, but last year I did them 3/1 for half marathon training. I think it really helped me to build up a proper base. This year I’m doing no walk breaks again and the longer distances feel much easier.
Lol on idad’s avatar!
Thanks everyone - I think I’m sold on the method, at least for now. My goals are to lose a little weight, avoid injury, and increase my distance so I can do 10K’s & maybe even HM’s, so it seems like I can achieve all of that with Galloway & enjoy it even more!
Watch those balls, iDad!!!
Gorgeous morning- 53 degrees and sunny. Felt like Colorado. I didn’t feel great. Not sure if it’s the tetanus shot or the residual effect of slamming to the ground on Saturday. The first mile was hellish, but it got better. 4.1 done.
5.15 miles this morning. This evening I’ll be playing 9 holes of golf, walking. Fully expect to sleep well tonight!
Love the avatar, idad! (From one Pats fan to another.)
