My exercise today was watching my S finish the Brooklyn !/2. He finished in 1:43:22 with a 7:54 average pace - 35 seconds ahead of his goal pace of 8:30. So proud of him, especially slogging through the downpour that erupted during his last mile. NYRR certainly knows how to put on a race…it was so well executed and finished right on the Coney Island Boardwalk…very fun. Anyway, when he then mentioned considering a 50-mile race in Vermont, I asked what shoes he’d train in for that and Hokas came up. He knows I’m a longtime CC addict and even became friends with a fellow poster’s S when his mom and I figured out that they’d both be working in Mumbai one summer. Anyone, I shared all your collective wisdom and experience about and with Hokas. He was appreciative of the information, so thanks all. For me, it was all about walking today.
Congrats to your son, runnersmom!
Added a 4-mile hilly walk through downtown SF. Made it all the way up the notoriously steep Lombard street - after storming my hometown’s Pill Hill and Queen Anne Hill several days a week, that was a cakewalk. B-)
Congratulations to him on an excellent half and to you for being a good supporter!
Thanks - I think I’ll be getting a lot of practice at this supporting thing…he and his girlfriend are doing another 1/2 in June. Oh, to be young!
30 minute warm, HUMID, damp, sprinkly, yucky run this morning! Just miserable weather! But got through it and the rest of the day was prepping the house and refrigerator for our last HS graduation tomorrow!!!
runnersmom, it is so wonderful that you are doing this for them. Without my real and virtual support teams, it would be very hard for me to race. I’m sure your son greatly appreciates your help and cheering.
Congrats on the graduation @abasket.
Congrats, abasket, and hugs. Last HS graduation!! Sniff…
Found some more stuff for Gertrude:

These require a rubber band. You can get them at performbetter or possibly a running store.
And this link has a good video demo of some hip strengthening exercises.

Congrats, abasket!
Since I didn’t do my longer run yesterday due to the rain, today was the day. I have felt tired all week- not sure if it’s from my fall or just things catching up with me. I didn’t think I had 8-10 miles in me this morning, but off I went. I did a slightly hillier route than last week and managed to eke out 10.3 miles, but the last 3 were pretty tough. It was 72 and humid to start, and didn’t get any better. I don’t complain about weather except in the winter, so all I’ll say is that I’m not used to it yet. Glad to be finished.
That’s how yesterday felt for me, MOWC. We went from winter to summer and the humidity is just miserable. I only squeaked out 9.5 and as you said, was glad to be done.
I did a little over 3 mile trail run yesterday and it was like slogging in mud. My run on Thursday it was 55 out but yesterday it was 77 and humid. I was not ready for that.
My 10k is next Saturday, Memorial Day weekend snuck up on me. Not sure I would say that I’m ready but I’m not freaking out like I was last year. The good news is that it is showing the weather to be cool which will be perfect for the marathoners. I see lots of PR’s out there with a high of 67.
Today I am resting. I played golf last night and between that and the run, my legs are hurting a bit.
Good morning everyone - thanks so much for all the hip flexor info. This is a great, supportive board & I appreciate being accepted as a “newbie” in every sense of the word.
So, after declaring that my hips felt great after my Saturday morning run, I took my two D’s to a movie & sat for abot 2 1/2 hours. When I stood up, left hip was in great pain. We had walked to the movies & I almost thought I would have to call DH to come pick us up.
Sunday AM I had committed to walk with a group of co-workers in the “Bay Bridge run/walk” which is a 4-mile path over the Coronado Bay bridge. Got up Sunday not sure if this was going to happen, but I felt better so I went. The hip bothered me between miles 1 & 2, then mysteriously just stopped hurting. Today I can feel a little soreness occasionally, but generally OK.
I think I will take the next 3-4 days off, with just some slow walking & gentle stretching. I think I actually may have pulled a muscle during the stretching I did (pigeon pose - ouch) & just need to back off & start over a bit.
We are delighted to have you, Gertrude! I think your plan of some slow walking/gentle stretching for a few days is a good one.
It is so humid here - tons of fog this morning. I just did not want to run, but got in 7 then came home and walked the dogs for a few miles. I do not like heat and humidity. One of the benefits of a group- you know people are waiting for you to show up so I don’t like to bail. Wore my new lulu tank and it felt great.
The spring humidity has been ridiculous lately. It seems to rain each night and we wake up to 150% humidity, sticky temperatures and grass that is growing like mad. It seems we went from cold and having the furnace running to 85 and air conditioning.
Gertrude- I wonder if you need a lumbar support for sitting. Try a rolled up towel or round pillow behind the small of your back the next time you sit for a long period (or in the car) and see if this helps your hip. I’ve struggled with that in the past and it helped. I also sat on a tennis ball under my butt muscle, which helped the upper hamstring pain, but also hip stuff.
Sitting is the root cause of a lot of skeletal issues! Unfortunately, we have to sit for hours when work or life requires it. I bought myself a special seat cushion by Sharper Image - it definitely helps. Also, good seat back works, too, as MOfWC mentioned.
Was planning on taking a run tonight but D2 asked me to go for a bike ride so went that route instead. That 30 minute ride and a couple of pup walks were all she wrote today. Suppose to cool down overnight and some nice 60’s ahead for the week!
I found out that our cubicles at work can be adjusted for the height of the desk. Tomorrow I’m having half of my cube raised to standing desk height. Should be interesting - we all work on laptops so I’ll have the option of sitting or standing at any time.
