MOWC_the reason we got started on the Hoka’s was H had plantar fasciitis and looked up shoes to help and that is when he got the Stinson trail- it went completely away. Yup I liked them, I got them with no foot issues.
Got 5.2 miles in last night, it was 85 degrees and still humid. We haven’t had rain for a couple days now and that is just great. I’ll be hitting the gym tonight for a session with my trainer.
My doctor had me start taking the daily baby aspirin after I turned 50. I wasn’t aware of the difference in benefits between men and women, that is very interesting. I’ve had to be on HRT for the past few years and I do worry about stroke risk. I also have some genetic mutation that has me at a higher risk for blood clots.
BB-are you following a specific training plan for your Labor Day marathon? I would be interested to know what your plan is and the mileage.
Gorgeous run in Lexington VA on a gravel/dirt trail called the Chessie Trail. I bitched last night when we pulled into the hotel because the immediate area was not runable- and I rarely say that. Miraculously, the front desk clerk knew about the trail and trailhead very close by. It was just perfect. Shaded, 67 degrees and I felt decent for the first time in ages. 4.5 done!
sabaray, that’s the way to cure Prime Day flop! I got myself a dress from Nordstrom.
MOfWC, glad to hear you felt “decent” - yay. I was shocked what a huge difference cooler weather makes for me.
C3Baker, being a lazy, NPV-calculating person I am, I found the least painful (IMO) way to train - I use the Marathonrookie’s PDF sheet. They call it a beginner program… I always feel like a beginner! There are others for more advanced runners that focus on speed etc. My marathon goal is simple - survive, have fun, and be able to go out for sushi and shopping afterwards!
Huge thanks to MOfWC for recommending Huma gels. My mango nutrition arrived yesterday, and I tried one gel. Pretty good! Ill see how it performs on the trail this weekend.
I also bought Skratch Labs powders to try during longer runs. The powder tastes decent. Salty and sweet, but not overwhelmingly so.
More nutrition news: got a pack of That’s It. (yup, there is a period) fruit bars with only 2 ingredients in each: dried apples and blueberries. 1.2 oz, 100 calories per bar, delicious! These bars could work well as snacks during backpacking.
D and I have made it up to 6 repeats of the run 3 minutes / walk 1 minute ratio. That’s a full 2 miles - a new long distance for her. Sadly, I got the date wrong on our planned 5K - it’s actually Aug. 16 which is the day she flies back to Philly for school. I’ll have to find one the weekend before.
3 mile run today. I have no idea what is going on with me but it felt like a slog through mud. I have to say that it’s pretty discouraging.
My H says that every run (or bike or any exercise) is a good run because you did it. But it would be nice if I didn’t feel so crappy. Nothing hurts but it never feels great. Hard to breath, legs feel dead. I even have been taking a rest day, where I may only play golf. Yesterday I played golf in a cart, it was not really exercise.
Couldn’t agree more. There are quite a few of you I’d love to hang out with!
I had a pretty dull run on the treadmill this morning, unfortunately. It would have been a beautiful morning to be outside. I’m going to try a short outdoor run Saturday - the ankle feels no different on the treadmill.
Or a brand new running spot. A new neighborhood, trail or park that you’ve never been before. New scenery. Like what MOWC described this morning - mentally and visually I need new things to look at, surprises, not know the space like the back of my hand because then I’m mentally adding up each .10 of a mile!!!
