Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

The Conquest is the only Hoka I did NOT like.

Sabaray, glad to hear that your ailments are relatively minor and won’t stop you from running.

I’m very happy with my Hoka Constants. I usually can’t tell subtle differences between running shoes, but I could really tell after trying several Hokas that they were the only ones that worked.

Other manufacturers are starting to make highly cushioned running shoes. But the combination of cushioning and stability is hard to find.

I visited a couple running stores in NYC last week. I really liked 2 shoes recommended by one of them – Adidas Tempo and New Balance 1500v1. Really light weight and supportive for us runners who pronate. My plan was to go back and buy at least one pair from the locally owned store, but (as readers of my recent shopping thread know) I spent a lot of time doing something else before I ran out of time and had to leave the city. I’m now debating buying the shoes online or calling the store and ordering from them, even though the price is higher.

People, either guilt trip me into supporting the locally owned store or support me for saving money.

I walked a lot in NY, ran a couple of times in the hotel gym, and ate a lot of food. It all balanced out as I didn’t gain any weight.

I put some avocado in my post-run smoothie this morning - I couldn’t taste it, but it made it really thick & creamy. I think next time, instead of avocado-strawberry, I will try avocado-chocolate - that will taste like a real indulgence!

I ran 12 miles this morning, but not sure that it counts as a 12 mile run. I ran 5 miles from home to the place our running club was meeting. Spent 10 minutes chatting with everyone and then did another 7 miles. So it was 12 miles altogether, but the 10 minute break really helped. I was dragging on the last mile home, though. H did 8 miles, I think he is following BB’s marathon rookie training plan.

Sabaray-so glad to hear that your injuries aren’t more serious and that you will be able to continue running. Yay! Good luck finding shoes that work for you.

Gertrude-your smoothie sounds fabulous!

In my book, it does count as 12 miles. Why do they have portapotties on the sides of marathon courses? if someone stops to do their business and then finishes, she still gets her finisher medal!

Ran 16 miles. Painfully slow and under the scorching sun. I think I earned my glass of red tonight! I give 2 thumbs and two big toes up to MOfWC’s Huma gels!!! So yummy and not too sweet. No bloat, no gas, no choking. I washed it down with some very dilute solution of Skratch Labs mango drink mix. Had to stop and refill the water bottle because I ran out of my drink.

Nice run, BB! I was happy to get back out this morning but only did 6 so I could get back out there on Monday.

Went with a pair of men’s Asics - the Kayano - also new socks and heel cups. These feel great.

I’m going to try the Huma gels. Those sound appealing.

Glad the Humas did well! I really like them. Good run!
Sabaray- Kayano is a good show. I hope it does the trick. I waved to you from the interstate. Fun day with 11 hours in the car. Ran 3 miles before we got on the road.

Just checked the temperature - 91 degrees! Outrageous. Glad I’m done with my run.

It looks like our CCers has a fun meetup!

It was a ton of fun, no doubt !

In addition to new shoes, I also visited Bluemercury and Whole Paycheck. As a result, we had Chilean sea bass, asparagus and Asian noodles. Mr. Sabaray is happy we didn’t have to eat any of the beauty products.

I’m back from Chapel Hill–it’s a long trip from there to Nantucket. Planning on going to the gym tomorrow morning. While I was in NC, I walked every day, except for the days when D was in the hospital. Since I volunteered to walk D and son-in-law’s dog, that duty got me out on the bike path near their house. The path was 3 miles out and back–which ended up being what I did. A few days, I walked the path twice. I tired the dog out on those days!

Question: Who has the right of way on a bike path? Walkers, runners, bikers? The posted rules on the path by D’s house said to travel on the right and pass on the left, but seems like lots of folks didn’t follow that rule.

Sabaray: glad you determined the problem with your ankle and that you’re taking steps to getting it better.

“Question: Who has the right of way on a bike path? Walkers, runners, bikers? The posted rules on the path by D’s house said to travel on the right and pass on the left, but seems like lots of folks didn’t follow that rule.”

The slowest “entity” has priority on the Beer Trail here in my neck of the woods. Walkers can keep on walking, and runners and bicyclists are supposed to pass them on the left. Most folks here know that they are supposed to walk on the right side, however, there is always a handful of new MSFT transplants from India who think that the left side is the “right side” for walking.

I meant “shoe”- not show! iPhone typing…
Yum on dinner!

We got it, MOfWC! I’m becoming very proficient in iPhonese, too!

On paths, the faster moving party overtaking another must slow and pass on left with caution. Persons coming from opposite directions must both stay to the right. One thing that makes me nuts is when bicyclists use multi user paths like they are for time trial training.

The Sammamish River (aka Beer) Trail has a speed limit posted - 15 mph. I don’t think I ever approached that while running on the trail!

Hi all! Back from our annual week at Family Camp on a small island in the middle of Lake Winnipesaukee in NH. This was our 24th year – obviously we like it! Perfect weather all week – the only rain we had was our last night, at about 3 AM. Our D and her BF came for 4 days; our S (USAF) couldn’t get time off. LOTS of walking all over the island (it’s the only way to get around) and early morning runs – plus liberal use of the kayaks and stand-up paddle boards. Fabulous fruit bar in the morning and salad bars at both lunch and dinner. I skipped desserts all week. SO, all in all, a winning week! I did end up with blisters on both 2nd toes, though – not sure if it was running on the very uneven terrain of the paths or what. I was wearing my “running store fitted shoes,” and hadn’t had any problems perviously. I’m due back on the golf course Tuesday, so hope everything is healed by then.

I skimmed the last week of posts here. Kudos to everyone as appropriate for ongoing successes.

Sounds like a wonderful week, CBB - glad you enjoyed it.

While running yesterday, there was a “speed detector” that posted the speed of passing cars - we had a few laughs as we approached wishing we were running 13 mph!

CBBBlinker- that sounds fun. My sister and her family used to vacation up at that lake. I never got to go, though.

6.3 very hot (77 to 82 degrees) and humid miles done and I did pretty well! 32.1 mile week. I thought I would feel horrible today between the weather and sitting in the car all day yesterday coming back from VA, but I did OK. I stayed on the flat path and had a decent amount of shade. I was soaked when I finished. I wanted to start at 6, but it was closer to 6:45 by the time I got going. Went to Sonic for an iced tea afterwards.

On one of the trails I often use, a woman wearing headphones veered into the path of a bicyclist. He hit her and she cracked her head on the pavement, becoming brain dead, and ultimately, an organ donor. After that, they created a pedestrian only lane adjacent to most of the trail. The peds only trail is a softer material, I believe for the comfort of the walkers/runners, but imo to make it more attractive to them and get more of them off the concrete trail. Still, many people still use the multi use trail and at heavy traffic times, is very stressful for me as a cyclist. That’s why I usually try to get there right as the sun rises.

I’ve always wondered how fast the cyclist was going when he hit that young woman.

5 miles done today. I was planning on 6, but it’s unusually humid here, and I was struggling, so I cut it short. This would have been a good day to go shirtless!
