Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Rode 53 minutes in the heat. I could have gone 7 more minutes, don’t have a clue why I bailed.

Oh well. There’s always tomorrow.

I wore the Kayano with the heel cups - felt great on my feet, no issues with the ankle at all. My legs just felt like lead - it’s hard to avoid hills where I live and I was just tired today. I think these will end up being a good shoe for me. I have a brand new pair of the 2000 that I haven’t worn yet - will try those with the heel cups and see if I want to keep those or return them.

Fingers crossed, sabaray!

Idad seems to be MIA - hope the remodel and the sleepless nights spent watching the Dead tour did not make him run and hide in the woods!

Hey!! Has anyone here swam in a salt purified pool? I have a virtually impossible goal of doing a triathlon, which is really far fetched, as I am the most pathetic, weak swimmer ever. I figured I’d be best starting out learning how to swim, but I abhor chlorine. There is a Gold’s Gym nearby that has a salt purified pool, which sounds like a decent option for me. Has anyone swam in those pools, and what did you think?
Thanks!

Our neighborhood pool is a salt pool. It’s great. So is the pool where my triathlete daughter swims at the JCC. It’s SO much better than the chlorinated pools. My understanding is that there is still a small amount of chlorine, but I can’t notice it.

I think I’m going to try it, then. I was thinking that the salt in the pool would burn your eyes, but sounds like it doesn’t. Probably much lower salt content than seawater, of course. I just hate chlorine so much, which is part of why I’ve avoided swimming. Hard to do a triathlon when you can’t swim!

Yes, salt is electrolytically converted into chlorine, which upon destroying the nasties eventually reverts to chloride aka salt. Such pools use significantly less chlorination. Less wear and tear on the swimsuits! I say go for it.

Wait, what? I have to wear a swimsuit? I forgot about that, now I might have to change my mind!

It’s very low salt content- not at all like the ocean. Can you take lessons or get a private teacher? The right technique makes a huge difference.

Yes, the Gold’s gym offers group lessons, but I think that’s for kids. They also offer private lessons, so I might have to go that route. Either that, or have my husband attempt to instruct me.

Had a very pleasant run: 5 miles, upper 70s. Feeding Mr.

Good luck Busdriver11! I know you can do it!

When my sil did her first triathlon, she rented a wetsuit. You are more buoyant and she said it really helped with the swimming. Lots of triathletes are not great swimmers.

Getting some instruction is a great idea and I would ask triathletes about the swim portion. Go for it!

Lots of golf here, I’ve played 6 of the last 7 days. It’s cutting into the other stuff. I’ve been doing some running but need to get on the every other day thing. The golf is so fun though!

I had a good 5 mile run last night. The hydration belt I ordered arrived yesterday so I gave it a test run. It didn’t bother me nearly as much as I thought it might, so I think it will work out OK. I’m only planning on using it for my long training runs. Today is H’s birthday so not only will I not get my regularly scheduled training run in, but he picked our favorite Italian restaurant for dinner tonight - double whammy! Oh well, it will be a great meal and tomorrow is another day.

Busdriver-good luck with the swimming! I will be interested to hear how private swimming lessons go. I would love to do a triathalon but I’m terrible at swimming so that is what is holding me back.

deb922-keep enjoying the golf! Summers are short and you need to do what you love! I hope you can find a way to fit the running back in as well.

Hmmm…still no iDad…hoping he is ok!

Lots of miles racked up here while I was gone! Deb, that’s a lot of golf! My H tried to get me to like golf early in our marriage. I decided it could only be good for me if there was a swimming pool at the end of every hole!

Extended weekend at the cottage. The water on the lake is so high the beach on the coast has been affected and the conditions to run are less than stellar. So, I didn’t! Lots of beach/shore walking in my wet shoes, swimming and kayaking. Planning to run tonight.

It’s a constant battle - sticking to the schedule and/or being “ok” if I move the schedule a bit. I’ve spent the last almost 3 years running almost religiously every other night - admittedly, sometimes getting a bit tired of it. Need to be convinced that it’s “ok” to sub in another form of exercise (like kayaking or biking) for the run and be “ok” with that. Mentally the change up is good - I fear I will lose endurance, skills, fitness, etc. by not sticking with that strict running plan - even if it is low mileage.

Newbie on this thread. I saw a dietitian two weeks ago, as I have to get smarter on less intake - she has me (female) on a 1400 calorie daily diet which is working pretty well - spread out so I don’t get too hungry. Just had to get frustrated enough to cut out the bad stuff. And for the most part, I am not hungry for it. I lose weight better with walk/jog; also swim (breast stroke) a mile at a time. Not exercising every day but at least 4 days a week. As a estrogen positive breast cancer survivor, I also take Tamoxifen 20 mg daily. Oncologist said H has to lose 2 lb to my 1 lb due to being on the medication (H wants to lose 15 lb; I have much more). I see the dietitian again on Thursday, so she will review my food diary and see what progress I have made. She said I can hit my goal weight easily in a year if I follow ‘the plan’.

Welcome, SOSConcern. There is a lot of experience and wisdom on this thread- and we do some stupid things, too! A mile of breaststroke would kill my knees! Stick with us here!

2.6 miles this am. I didn’t get up in time for more. It was 77 at 6am with high humidity. This is getting tough.

Worried about iDad.

Good for you SOS for getting your diet under control!

I have been into making smoothies lately - plain nonfat yogurt, bananas & berries & just a splash of honey. I thought that would be pretty healthy, but I noticed they are doing a number on my blood sugar. I get hungry quickly after having one & get what I call the “hungry shakies” which indicates my blood sugar has taken a dive. Too bad - I was really enjoying them after a run!

Gertrude, you might want to put a scoop or two of protein powder in your smoothies; it would not add too many calories, but will keep you full longet. I use pure whey protein powder without any sweeteners - this stuff from Amazon:

SOSConcern, welcome! Your dietician’s plan sounds reasonable. 1400 is doable, although it would be on the lower end for me. The trick is to find an eating “plan” that you will be able to continue eating when you are done with your weight loss. Good luck! And Im so impressed with anyone who can swim a mile of breaststroke. I love swimming breaststroke because I love to pop my head out of the water once in a while, but my knees would have a riot if I swam a mile! So running it is for them…left, right, left, right!

Worth a try BB - thanks!
