Beautiful morning here with low humidity, did a bit less than 6, felt okay, not great. Had to go buy a new swimsuit which, shall we say, is not my favorite thing to do but I needed one badly.
Bromfield, I hear you on the whole sweating thing - yesterday I started sweating during the warm-up!
Michael, now that we know you’re okay, your story is hilarious! I could just picture it.
Hope the non-wild D has a good race, MOWC. I suspect she’s well prepared! I’ll be cheering for her.
I don’t think that future health is really the big payoff for exercising. I think the big payoff is better quality of life in the here and now. Whether it’s hiking. Or walking around the Washington Mall sightseeing. Or hustling through an airport, it’s nice to be fit enough to not be held back. A little exercise goes a long way.
Speaking of surfing, did any of you guys see the video of the world champion surfer attacked by a shark during a competition, on live TV?
OMG, that is one of my nightmares. So glad he was okay. I watched an interview with his competitor, who was in the water at the same time and whose only instinct was to swim towards him to help. The kid said he thought for sure the champ was going to be a goner, and he could not really get through the interview without crying. It was very touching.
MOWC, how exciting for your daughter! Hope she has a great time and is happy with her performance.
Sabaray, that accident, in retrospect, was not only fodder for some funny stories but was pivotal in putting things in motion that would never have been foreseen. After I finished my PT, my wife didn’t want me resuming working out in the basement out of concern that I would be an idiot and tear things up. So she got me a trainer named Jody who was a competitive natural female body builder. Jody knew how to ride a bike but hadn’t for many years. I lent her my hybrid bike to do some rides with me and she fell in love with cycling. I made her a deal that I would purchase a package of 15 training sessions with her if she promised to use the money to buy a performance road bike. She did and we started to ride together more frequently. She joined the bike club I belonged to and eventually desired to try racing. When the membership of the club rejected my efforts to have the club form a race team as an adjunct to its recreational rides, Jody and another friend of mine, Doreen, quit the club and joined Sturdy Girls which was a mix of a race team and recreational club for women. It was because of Jody that I ultimately became a sponsor of the Sturdy Girl Race Team and started riding with the team members. Jody has also been a tremendous inspiration and supporter of my new endeavors as a trainer and our friendship extends in so many directions. None of this would have evolved but for that accident!
Thanks, Bunsen and Michael. I hope she doesn’t have any mechanical problems. I need to get my run in before it gets too hot. Maybe after she takes off on her 4 hour bike ride!
Ran 5 miles after a really long day of sitting on my rear end. WTH - my left calf muscle cramped after the run so badly I did a one-legged dance around the kitchen.
I have the camera mounted to the shoulder strap of my backpack. Every kid on the hill wanted to be on YouTube, hence a lot of action shots.
This is a short, but fairly steep climb right on the shore of Lake Winnepesaukee, which is quite the bustling place in the summer. Awesome views out over the lake from the summit and rock outcroppings on the way up. The trailhead has a huge parking lot. When I arrive, there were several dozen more cars parked out on the highway (overflow).
@interesteddad, when you are hiking, do you carry anything to protect you from wild animals? Some kind of bear repellent or something?
D1 likes to go hiking at a national park not too far from Durham. We went there with her when we were visiting. I confess in addition to my shark in the water fear, I have an irrational fear of bears or wildcats one could meet while hiking. I was looking around warily at first, but eventually was so distracted by the humidity and heat that I forgot about it. But I think about this for D1, even though she doesn’t. She doesn’t have any fears, to a fault.
Thinking of a very funny facebook clip I saw where the woman talked about not going into the woods (that is where bears live) and not going into the ocean (that is where sharks live). She didn’t think the fear was irrational @nrdsb4 - her delivery of the message was just so unique. Don’t know if it is on youtube somewhere.
idad – great video. I’m missing Lake Winnipesaukee already – an entire year before we go back to Family Camp!!!
MNK - great “after the fact” story. (Probably not quite as humorous right at the moment.)
4.8 mile walk yesterday morning, along my “Beach Run” route.
This morning I’m being a slouch – truly enjoying an off morning of just sitting with coffee. “Hotel Week” is in full swing – first visitor leaves mid-day; next guests arrive soon after. Way too much eating out and alcohol, compared to my usual routine. H simply refuses to accept how hard I struggle to lose the extra pounds, and actually gets angry if I don’t keep pace with him. (Now that I’ve written that, it sounds really stupid – which it is. At least when we’re out with friends he won’t say anything – he’ll just shoot me dirty looks instead.)
@blankmind - LOL,same here with the husband. If I were to whip up some Kraft Mac & Cheese for dinner, I’d be a hero, but serve salmon with broccoli and I get pouts and snide comments. He grew up in a family where he was forced to eat his vegetables - I think this has had a lingering effect.
Lol Gertrude, that’s how it is here too. I’ve been enjoying trying out new vegetables that I’ve never eaten before. Half the time he won’t even try it.
