Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

CBBB - I just signed up for the Lose It food tracker app. So far, I like it way better than My Fitness Pal. I’m going to try to be better about the food tracking, because it does help keep me from mindless nibbling.

“One toenail is turning colors - lovely!”

Toenails are overrated. B-) Just kidding. Hope it does not come off, and you will find some solution to this issue soon.

Color runs (which I would not do under threat of death) are taking a huge hit on our news here. They did some extensive testing and it turns out that the powder is very flammable and even the gas powered blowers that they shoot the powder with could spark and cause a tragedy. Apparently, there was a huge fire at a stadium concert in China because of this same kind of powder. States are looking at banning the color runs or regulating them.

Also, some medical experts weighed in on the inadvisability of breathing the particles in.

I guess you just can’t have nice things anymore…

Yikes. I was wondering about the health effects; if the particles are mostly organics, they can certainly go up in flames if enough heat is provided. Makes sense.

Whoever recommended the new Matt Fitzgerald book “How Bad Do you Want it”- THANK YOU! Best running book I’ve read in a long time. Really helps a head case like me. For those that like to compete I highly recommend. Have you read it MOWC? Good for folks that have race anxiety.

Awesome, Ohio. Was not me. I am reading his book on perfect race weight, and his website has a ton of helpful articles.

Two to four days without power…that stinks! Do you have a freezer/fridge full of food you’re worried about? Terrible about the deaths.

I’ve wondered that before about the Color Runs - and breathing in that stuff. As much as I get anxious about races and timing, the one race I did that wasn’t timed (though wasn’t a color run) was somehow unsatisfying to me.

I’ll have to get that book!

Yeah- they said the particles were actually sharp (in a very tiny way).

Hallelujah! Thanks for your thoughts and well wishes! The power is back ON. It pays off to live on the same grid as a school. The district really, really hates to make up “snow” days, so it puts some pressure on the utility co. to restore power as fast as they can. In any case, we have a generator for the freezers, two gas fireplaces, gas stove, gas water heater, and three furry cats. We discovered a huge Douglas fir branch stuck in the lawn more than a foot deep into the ground. Those things are very dangerous.

I’m so glad about your power!

http://thecolorrun.com/faq/ says that the color dust is made of “cornstarch, baking soda, and FD&C dyes” and the shine powder is “more like make-up”.

I just couldn’t face running in the rain in the dark after work yesterday so I ran 5 miles on hotel treadmill. As much as I dislike treadmills, it wasn’t really that bad.

BunsenBurner-glad that you got your power back on! My daughter is still without power and they have no idea when it will be restored. Since both she and her boyfriend had been gone on business travel, all they had in their freezer was ice cream (which is now gone!). H and I arrive Friday night, I am hoping she has power by then!

I’ve never had any desire to do a color run, just the idea of inhaling the dust doesn’t appeal to me. I had no idea the stuff is flammable - yikes!

Michael-I hope you figure out the solution to your cramps, it sounds awful!

The Chinese article I linked above says the same thing. Cornstarch is not exactly a benign substance when it gets into the lungs. Adding dyes to it makes it even worse! And the “shine powder”… I’d like to see the MSDS, please.

It is also flammable, especially in a fine powder form:

PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS “TRICK”.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and sympathetic comments about my cramping. Tonight I didn’t ride but did my parallettes/chin-ups/dips/db curl routine. No leg cramps but some slight foot cramping after on. That’s progress :).

BB, glad to hear your power is back on. Multi day outages really make salient how dependent we are on modern conveniences and technology. We ended up getting a whole house generator because of the frequency with which long outages hit our area. Runs off of natural gas and kicks in automatically after 20 seconds of an outage. Best improvement we made to our house other than our deck.

Wild wind here last night - I had already decided after seeing the forecast for this morning it would be a treadmill day. I am just so fearful of falling again. Much of my running group was at the center this morning doing the same thing - managed 5 miles.

I’m going to pass on the color runs. It just never appealed to me.

The running gods were against me today. Got myself ready and out, turned on my garmin, but the battery was dead. My first thought was I can’t go out without my garmin :((. Reason returned and I got my phone out and turned on mapmyrun. Now I’m ready to go. Turn on my head lamp, batteries dead. Ugh. I went anyway, cause I didn’t get all dressed up for nothing. Ran about .8 miles and my knee hurts >:P

Michael, if you figure out the muscle cramps, let me know. I have a real problem with those. I find that they tend to come when I run faster than normal or longer than normal.

I channeled all you morning runners today. Decided to get up extra early and head to the my work fitness center BEFORE work. 3 miles and with my pup walk and all the walking around campus already close to 10,000 steps for the day. Windy here too but still mild. I COULD have run outside, but decided to stick with the plan. Running outside, in the dark, in the fall with all the leaves, sticks, sweet gum “meatballs”, acorns, etc. just seemed like a recipe for disaster.

It is great to have it out of the way!

We had that wind on Tuesday.
Blankmind- failure of electronics can really ruin things! Sorry your leg hurt, too.

Good job on the treadmill, Sabaray and abasket!

2.2 miles for me outside before an early work seminar.

We got home last last night from Italy. Had a great time but glad to be home.

The weather was perfect, 70 every day with cool nights and not a drop of rain. H wore his Fitbit and the last 7 days we walked 73 miles! We walked and walked and walked. In spite of walking 10+ miles every day, I managed to gain weight. Although the food was good, we ate out every meal and big meals too.

My feet and legs are beat.

Welcome home!!! I hope when you’re rested and “caught up” you’ll share some of your favorite places and meals and all on your thread you had started for your trip!

I’m sure you didn’t come “rolling” home - a trip is worth the splurging and extra calories.
