I actually used to sell athletic shoes at an athletic shoe store in high school / college. We were trained on the shoes. New Balance were the hot new thing but they were very well made. So were Saucony. Reeboks were made absolutely horribly. I would pull out a new pair to help a customer try them on and the midsole would be falling apart. I’ve never ever bought Reebok since I was so unimpressed by their quality. Of course, the technology has changed dramatically since 30 years ago, but nonetheless … it’s kind of like those of us who lived through bad American car quality won’t ever buy them even if the quality is now higher!
This is a “super-Friday” - I took all next week off, and my DD is flying home from college tonight. I can’t wait to sit around the breakfast table tomorrow sipping coffee and chatting (after my 8-mile run!). There is the small matter of hosting 16 people for turkey on Thursday, but I don’t have to think about that at least until Monday.
Skechers is a very legitimate running shoe. They really stepped up their game in the last 5 years of so (despite the litigation over the weight loss rocker sole shoes) and have great walking/comfort shoes and fantastic running shoes.
Pizzagirl- Meb Keflezighi is our country’s premier marathon runner. He is over 40 now, but he is an amazing person and runner, and the top ambassador for our sport. He was dumped by Nike and then went on to win Boston in 2014. He signed with Skechers in 2011, which was a great move by them.
Very few running shoes are made domestically. It simply isn’t economical.
Donuts here at work this morning. I had two less-than-halfs. Today is our Thanksgiving feast, too.
I have to have some more eye surgery in a few weeks- not sure when yet. It’s “just” cataract (the retina surgery I had in June leads to cataract), but still… I’m hoping my vision will improve, because I’m really struggling right now. I’m fine close up, but can only see distance with my driving glasses on. I have to wear the driving glasses (over my contacts) to watch basketball games at Vanderbilt! It’s been a journey. In the race last Saturday in Charlotte I couldn’t read the street signs and even the big, beautiful houses were blurry to me. Things have gotten worse in the last month.
MOWC, hope the cataract surgery solves the problems! I too am having increasing vision issues that my contacts can’t resolve, particularly in low light conditions. I’m at the point where I’m chomping at the bit for cataract surgery with the hope that having corrective lens installed will solve the problems (and eliminate the need to wear contacts).
MOfWC, hope your surgery will be uneventful and will take care of your issues. Fingers and toes crossed for you.
I was interested in the shoe article, thanks for posting it, @sabaray . I was also surprised to see the Hokas rated so low. I know my daughter has tried them and was unimpressed–but for me, thirty pounds ago now, they made the difference between being able to “run” and having to walk because the knee pain was unbearable. I’ve tried several different models, though, and ended up hating one model (Stinson Trail) even though I really like the Cliftons. I also wonder if more expensive shoes end up being rated lower because people expect more. The statistics were just on the ratings, and the ratings may have been affected by price. (“I’d give this shoe five stars if it didn’t cost $200.”)
Yes, best of luck MOWC with your eye procedure(s). We need our eyes!!!
Spin class today - it was great!!!
Not so great…finding out our beloved instructor is leaving…
Thanks, all. It should be an easy procedure and, hopefully, I can get at least 1 very slow mile in to keep the streak going!
Good luck on the eye surgery!
I was in for a checkup today, and wanted to talk about my slow weight gain and struggle to get back to where I feel good---- dr smiled and said “your weight is fine” and I wanted to punch him. I tried to ask about is it normal to work so hard, to stay even, but he cut me off and said that dreaded “a woman your age has to expect…” Arg. Who is he to decide I can’t do something, or shouldn’t want to feel better? So I came home, read about all your workouts, and then ran on my elliptical. Stupid doctor. (He’s not the boss of me!)
greenbutton, sadly, many doctors know very little, if anything, about fitness and weight loss. They understand even less when it comes to someone who wants to have a focused, structured fitness program. Keep doing your own thing. Take advantage of this board and other resources to get information that is relevant and helpful in the pursuit of your goals.
Greenbutton- I would have smacked him! Good for you for going home and doing what you know is right for YOU!
Greenbutton, I fired a doc who said that no one “my age” should run longer than a couple of miles. I agree with Michael that doctors are not the best source of weight management and exercise advice.
Aaargh - that’s so patronizing! I’d get a new doctor, who wants to listen to you and work with you.
I’m very lucky in that regard. My primary doc and cardiologist (who I have because of family history) know and understand me well and therefore tailor their approach with me with regard for the standards I have set for myself. They give me much more input and control over things like tests and referrals to physical therapy. When I get stress tests, my cardiologist lets me deviate from the standard Bruce protocol so that I can push myself to the limits I experience on the bike. When I have an overuse injury and decide I need PT, my primary lets me call in my own diagnosis and writes me a referral without requiring an office visit. In this day and age of assembly line managed care medicine, its a breath of fresh air.
Sending positive thoughts for your eyes, MoWC. That’s got to be hard when you’re running. Yikes, greenbutton, I admire your restraint with that doctor.
Michael, you are fortunate to have doctors you trust and see eye to eye with. Until last month I had had a fantastic PCP for 14 years. He just decided he’d had it with the administrative part of practicing and retired young. I am doctor shopping and wearing a very sad face over losing him
I let my suppressed paleo appetite out tonight. DH borought home a beautiful piece of all grass fed and finished beef sirloin. We ate a small portion for dinner and I just rendered a bunch of the fat from the trimmings which I’ll stick in the freezer. That’ll be a treat to cook with but the kitchen smells wonderful–the rare aroma of beef fat–right now! Walked a few miles today.
How annoying Greenbutton. As long as you’re healthy overall, you don’t need him to design a fitness routine???
I often run in my neighborhood and I feel pretty sure some of my women neighbors think “what is she THINKING running at her age?!!” They are also probably the ones who curse at me through the window when I’m cutting the grass instead of my husband!!!
I fully hate that gender/age blanket statement stuff.
Mr. B and I are doing 2x5k tonight!!! The restaurant is 3.1 miles from the hotel where we are staying. Guess what? We are saving on the cab and walking.
Shoes: Chanel 1 inch chunky heel pumps from the Rack - best $150 I spent since my Hokas. Dress: recycled from 2013 NYE Tory Burch sheath. Speed? As fast as we can shove our way through the crowds.
Took a break from parallettes training tonight and instead did a dumbbell compound movement routine. Burpees/hammer curl/shoulder press combinations make me cry :((
