Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Jym626, instead of doing static holds of squats against the wall, have your trainer show you how to use a stability ball to do dynamic squats against a wall. You will be able to control the stresses on your knees by controlling the range of motion, the ball will better support your lumbar region and the dynamic motion better replicates what your quads will be doing when you are skiing than a static hold.

Thanks, all.
I know that this is a slow process, and I’ve worked to get in better shape for skiing every year! I’ve got a stability ball that I often sit on at the computer station. Will use it to try the dynamic squats.

Just finished raking up the last of our leaves - we have a late dropping tree. Glad that’s over! That might be exercise for today. We had a party to attend last night and I feeling like I had way too much salty and sweet food even though I really restrained myself. I wanted to eat a lot more than I actually did! I think just the tiniest bit of food outside your norm can do it. Only one glass of red wine though!

The holiday parties/treats are going to be there, right? Frame of mind - save the calories for the really good stuff - pass up the store bought spinach dip, but make room for the homemade bacon wrapped dates!!!

I love the way you think, abasket!

Icky rain is messing up with my leaf taking plans. We too have quite a few still on the ground.

Only problem - everything last night was the really good stuff!

The food at our company party was really good. I had 2 glasses of wine. The buffet was good and I focused on the peel and eat shrimp. The desserts were good and ,thankfully, those small portions so I tried a few and none were just huge. The chocolate chip bread pudding was really, really good.

Sounds like a great party, MOfWC! Did everyone wear their Vegas best?

I LOVE bread pudding. I still remember a chocolate one I had about 20 years ago. I declared it the single best thing I had ever eaten & that’s probably still true.

This has been a tough week for me–I’ve done about half of what I normally do in terms of workout activities. I’ve managed to get in a session with the trainer, one yoga class, and a short walk–although I spent 4 hours walking around town for the Christmas Stroll activities yesterday (many steps).

I have lots of excuses for not getting out more this week (my goal is 6 days of activity and 1 rest day). I hope I can get back on the wagon this upcoming week. It helps me to sign up for classes/yoga/trainer. If I know I’m paying for something, I’m so much more likely to do the activity. When I’m at home, I always think I can workout later in the day and that “later” never happens

Don’t beat yourself up. The “want to do” and “have to do” list this time of year is especially long - accept a slip with the condition that you get back on course the next day or so.

Just got back from Costco. Bought an enormous bag of Hershey kisses (a mix of kisses, hugs and almond type). 310 in a bag. Plan to use the plain for the peanut butter blossom cookies. The others will go in a candy dish as the holiday gets closer. Is ok for me, I can walk by them or limit myself to one. But…two things…

  1. The serving size on the back says "one serving size is 9 kisses" - really? NINE?! That seems like a lot to me - can you not stop at 3, 4, or 5!?
  2. When I got home I realized that I somehow bought two bags - yep, now I have 620 kisses! #subconsciousdecisions????

Serving size is more of a government concept and often makes no sense, like when a snack size bag of chips is counted as two servings or a can of soda is 1.5 servings. They did clamp down a while back to make it more realistic. 9 kisses is about 200 calories, which seems like a reasonable snack amount.

Nice job with the two bags though.

^^Or a regular, single-package candy bar that is supposed to have been two servings. Lays had it right with the “Nobody can eat just one” slogan…potato chip or funky single portion nestled among more.

H and I took a long walk this morning–maybe 4.5 miles. I jogged a little later while out seeking a specimen (fungal)

Tomorrow begins the great roof replacement project. I may not be sane by the end of it unless I spend as little time inside as possible. I am so, so, so not looking forward to any aspect of this major home maintenance, save the protection of the structure under the shingles. Grrrr.

“Serving size is more of a government concept and often makes no sense…”

It is a concept derived from the food pyramid etc. which is used heavily by food companies to present something unhealthy like a bag of chips as something that is relatively healthy. “Only 100 calories per serving!” Followed by a small print note “4 servings per bag.” The “clamp down” happened because of a threat of more regulations.

Good luck with that Plantmom - wear some earplugs!!!

30 minute dusk run - just finished. I REALLY REALLY need another day of weekend - this just wasn’t enough time!

Just one more day off…unfortunately it’s another busy week at work…

Bunsen- the attire ranged (as always at the company party) from tasteful dressy or cocktail attire to “did she look in the mirror before she left the house?” BUT- what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas and the dress code police were not there!

I did not feel like doing my run today. That 3.7 mile hilly race really trashed my legs. I drove to the flat trail and willed myself to start. The original plan was 6.2 miles for a 31 mile week, but I would have been happy with 3 miles. I perked up some as I got going and did the 6.2. Walked the doggie, too.

Serving sizes came about when nutritional labeling requirements were added to all products, and the sizes were supposedly based on government surveys of eating habits on the 70’s.

I remember tiny coke bottles when I was a kid, maybe that is where 1.5 servings for a can came from.

abasket — I just want to say in all seriousness, no, some people can’t stop at 3 or 4. I count out all 9, eat them one right after the other, and I would eat the whole bag if I were alone. I HAVE eaten a whole bag  more than once. Oreos too. Chocolate chips.

I was probably 30 before I understood that It was not about willpower, or character, or habit. I don’t know what compulsive overeating is about — probably “eating my feelings”. Anyway, I learned to make Christmas cookies Dec 24 with someone else there to do the unwrapping and then take the rest away!

3.5 miles on my regular route. Phew.

MOfWC, LOL. What you described looked similar to what we recently saw on the Strip in Vegas: a smorgasbord of attire, from elegant to ridiculous to frumpy. Great job reaching the goal.

The USDA abandoned the food pyramid several years ago. Instead, it is promoting a system of portion control and macro- nutrient balancing called My Plate. See www.choosemyplate.gov

The My Plate website contains many very good and useful tools to assist people in putting together a healthy and sound nutritional plan. While like any tool, it is based on an assumed typical population, it attempts to differentiate between males, females, age groups and assumed activity levels. A much better and updated tool compared to the outdated food pyramid.
