Feeling good enough today to walk a bunch outside–7.5 miles in all. Fitbit under-recorded the mileage by a mile. Soft foods, especially pudding and yogurt, are already boring me. I took control of the situation today and made a creamy squash, carrot, parsnip soup and a perfect cheese souffle.
Cheese souffle? Swoon… I’ve never tried…sounds amazing!
@sabaray, that’s what I kept telling myself, lol!
@Pizzagirl, the article was interesting in that the study attempted to use scientific method to test a theory that has been “conventional wisdom” in the body building/power lifting/strength conditioning world for many years. Of course, the test protocol in the study was unsustainable but the application of this approach to muscular development and weight loss has been applied successfully on a long term basis “in the field”. It will be interesting to see the results of future studies with a different population and a more reasonable protocol.
Didn’t quite make it to 5k today. Somewhere in the mid-4k range.
My puppy went to spend a few days at her grandparents’ house. They have a dog only a little older than ours and we frequently send dogs back and forth so they can spend a few days with each other (and wear each other out!) But dang, those steps taking care of the pup (letting her out, feeding her, etc) add up.
Romani, call it your recovery day. Pets do make us move! You should see me sprint when my cat starts barfing up a hairball.
My sugar story of the day. I took a small bite of a Reese’s peanut butter cup, and it tasted gross. Too sweet! I tossed the rest.
Got home late and was greeted by a sweaty Mr. He hopped on his bike and pedaled a bit while waiting for me. His motivation? “I just had to do it because otherwise I would just sit and surf the web while eating mindlessly.” Lol.
Good for you Bunsen. I still like Reese’s, unfortunately.
Romani- Dr. Kenneth Cooper, guru of exercise for cardiovascular health, says “Walk your dog- even if you don’t have one!”
I walked a lot in Florida, but no running so I have been taking it easier on the treadmill. Walked briskly for 10 minutes then switched over to 1 minute intervals walk/run for 20.
I was trapped at my desk most of yesterday and was mentally exhausted by the time I got home, so not a great workout day yesterday. Glad I got the Pilates in. Headed to the gym and ran on the treadmill this morning, 4.3 miles. Came home and walked the pups. Now off to work!
On those days when I know I should get out, but the idea of running for a few miles just sounds like “too much”, I “allow myself” to do a run/walk blend. Almost always, once I get out, I end up running much more than walking - the first step is getting out there - once I get walking or blending, I find myself saying, “oh heck, just RUN IT!”
Walk/Run blends are very worthy.
Plantmom, I’m still thinking about that cheese souffle of yours…do you use a recipe that might be online that you can share a link to???
I ran 6 miles last night. It was cold and very windy with a mixture of light rain/snow flurries. Not my favorite weather! But I was glad to get the run in. Afterwards I was famished and we went out to dinner. The waitress messed up and forgot to turn in our order so it took forever to get our food. Yikes, I was starving! I understand that mistakes happen and we were very pleasant about it, but once the food finally arrived there is no need to come by every 2 minutes to make sure it is alright and ask “was it worth the wait?” (um…No). Just let me eat, finally!
No Reece’s peanut butter cup would ever get tossed by me! I love that chocolate and peanut butter combination.
Plantmom-I’m glad you’re feeling better enough to do all that walking. The soup and the cheese souffle both sound fabulous!
Interesting article about what my Fitbit may be transmitting … I’m not so concerned if my step count gets “out there,” but my login credentials? Yikes!! I did a double-check on my Fitbit account to be sure my password there is totally different from one I use anywhere else.
I skipped the gym on Monday due to the still sore lower back muscle, or whatever it is. Tuesday morning I felt better so walked on the treadmill. I also did a set of lower back stretches. Rinse and repeat yesterday and today. I still feel some discomfort, but hope it will eventually go away. I haven’t done any running this week, though. I’m not sure if that would make things worse or not …
I do a fair amount of work in the data security area in my lawyer job. I’m about to teach a class on Saturday at our Women of the Church retreat (yeah, I know- interesting audience) on internet safety. The bottom line is: there is no privacy and don’t be stupid!
4.1 miles this morning- 33 degrees, some wind and mostly clear. No after work running because of a Vandy basketball game. I brought shorts/shoes etc to work in case I can sneak down to the gym late afternoon for a mile or two on the treadmill. Fighting for miles this week due to early work things and above-mentioned retreat this weekend. I will run up on “the mountain” (Sewanee/Monteagle) but won’t have huge blocks of time.
I wanted to share this from a good running friend of mine. She is 42, runs ultra-marathons and is very petite and fit. She is a grandmother. She wants to get the word out so people don’t think they are immune from this sort of thing.
She wrote: "I have come to a reality in my life that I’ve been hoping I wouldn’t have to deal with. One can only escape genetics for so long, especially when one enjoys food & beer! A stop at urgent care due to feeling extremely off (along with some chest pressure and such), ended with a trip by ambulance to the hospital. Apparently blood pressure of 190 over 107 is not a good thing. Hearing those dreaded words of “We can’t rule out that you’ve had a heart attack” were words I did not expect to hear. So, hours & a bunch of tests later, I was set free. No heart attack, no blood clot, no stroke, but still with a high blood pressure that needs to be addressed. My family history prepared me for this, I’m not shocked. Bloodwork was excellent though! Today I will have an ultrasound of my heart to rule out muscle imbalances, next week I’ll see the cardio doc to figure out a plan of action. Until then, I’ll take my new daily medicine, limit salt, caffeine, alcohol and such…sigh not workout or run, and just think about what I’ve done.
If I seem quiet or not around. I’m here. I’m not down & out, just processing and figuring out a new tactic (with some help from doctors of course!). Not to mention adjusting to being on medicine. Yuck." …
It makes me worry about some of my friends and family members…
It’s great that she was proactive enough to go to urgent care with her symptoms. She’s absolutely correct that we can only escape genetics for so long. I’m glad she didn’t actually have a heart attack and that she’s got a plan for moving forward with additional tests and doctor visits. It must be a big blow to her, though, as an ultra-marathoner to have to back off her workouts and running while they get things under control. Thanks for sharing her story.
That would be a very difficult adjustment to make and one I would struggle with, even though I’m clearly not an ultra-marathoner. I hope her treatment is successful and she can return to running.
Bunsen, you need to try Justin’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups. I don’t think you would find those too sweet. They also come in a mini size for a little treat.
Michael is a brave, brave man! Your efforts on the other thread remind me of when we were kids and put our fingers in our ears and wiggled them around when we didn’t want to listen to someone.
Ha! I still do that!
Me too!
