Best news is that it’s done and in the record books MOWC. I hope once you warmed up you enjoyed a good hot breakfast and your legs get some well deserved time off the rest of the day. I know it’s bitter here and I really can’t imagine doing more than a couple of miles in this weather - my hats to you for even showing up!
MOWC - i want to quit every race I’m in!
Ran 10 miles on the AlterG. 70% weight. 125 bpm HR going high 6-high 7 minute pace. Think I’m finally making progress on this low HR training. A week ago, I was 11-12 minute pace. I think a lingering cold had affected me. Plus I’ve stopped taking my statin. I’m under 150 cholesterol level now so I don’t think I need it. My health assessment showed a 2" reduction in thigh circumference and 1" on my calf from 4 years ago. I’m concerned that the statin might have had an affect on muscle atrophy and reduction in mitochondria. Anyway if I have to choose between a heart attack and a shiny medal—I’m choosing the shiny medal!
The trainer has me on a new routine using the TRX. I always thought it was an exercise trendy thing so I avoided it and stuck to my old school routine. Now I know why Idad always used to say the TRX used to kick his butt.
Nice job MOWC and family! As you were bemoaning your race, what stood out to me was 30 seconds faster than last year, 2nd in age group and in better shape than last year. Regardless of anything rlse, that sounds like a win to me! Sometimes I take a step back and have to laugh at how so many of us are so critical of ourselves because our performance somehow doesn’t meet our expectations, as we do things most of our peers only shake their heads over.
And ya know what, as far as I’m concerned, every single person on this board is special and deserving of praise and recognition, whether new to this game or accomplished, just for putting themselves out there and taking the risk of challenging their boundaries.
“…30 seconds faster than last year, 2nd in age group and in better shape than last year.”
Yes, that’s what I saw. Plus, it was cold and there was no tapering. A win for sure.
Ohio, colds really do have an effect. When I had my annual wellness physical on Thursday, my recurring cold was brewing. My body temp was 96.6, my resting pulse was 10 beats higher than usual and my blood pressure was 10 higher both systolic and diastolic. Today, after sleeping more and taking yesterday off, my HR and bp are back to my norms.
And yeah, TRX can really be challenging. Part of the beauty of it is how you can scale it to any strength and ability level. There are some variations where just getting into the position seems like a ridiculous challenge (like inverted presses with both feet suspended overhead)! If you’re ever interested in some out of the box progressions for any particular exercise, let me know.
OMG, the kid who has never ran past 21 miles is now in the lead! Hope Meb does not give up at this point!! 3 miles to go… Hang in there!!!
Dangit, I am sore today. I guess I overused some muscles. Luckily it seems to be sore muscles and not joints- and I will take that every day of the week.
It is FREEZING here. I’m huddled in my room with a space heater on because even the house is cold. I was going to try to go to the pool again but with sub-zero temperatures, I am not in a hurry to go outside even if it’s for the short walk between the car and the building (no need to give my body another reason to be mad at me!
). Instead, I’m going to use this as motivation to reorganize my room a bit so I have room to do some floor exercises in here. I also have an exercise bike that hasn’t been put to much use since my knees have been in such rough shape but I think it’s time to start working with that again. An easy 20 minute ride should be a good starting point
MOWC- congratulations on the race!!
All of you inspire me
Thanks. Ohio- I don’t think you need that statin. Glad you are training well.
I’m glued to the marathon trials. Go Meb! Galen Rupp was implicated in the Salazar doping stuff, so I’m not sure about him…
Thanks, all. I am realistic about my performance, and I should have won the age group and been a minute faster. I learned, though. It was just so, so difficult on totally dead legs. This wasn’t a goal race by any means, but it would have been nice not to feel like death. My toes were cramping up afterwards!
The commentators now talk about how Galen likes to do squats in his workouts, but I am so impressed with his cooling technique - lol at that holy singlet.
Galen could decide not to run the marathon in Rio, so 4th place here could matter. Galen might stick to the shorter stuff. Amazing race, though. He’s so cute! And YAY MEB! 40 years old!
Here comes Meb!!! Turns 41 years old on May 5th!!! Well done Meb, well done.
Oh I so feel for the 4th place runner.
“Galen Rupp was implicated in the Salazar doping stuff, so I’m not sure about him…”
^^Uh oh.
Meb is so happy. His kiddos are too cute.
Mr. asked me if the two female leaders were twins.
I am lol at their runner’s tan.
The weather in LA is BRUTAL.
Congrats MoWC! It sounds painful, for sure, but you did it with improvement and at a pace I can only dream about. Good job!
Glad you’re seeing some benefits, Ohio.
Thanks for the Olympic trial reminder. We’'re watching now. Wow.
I took a short run and walk on the beach for a total of 5 miles. It’s our last full day here, but we had a beautiful day with a clean beach.
Oh what a nail biting finish in the women’s race! Amy Cragg is now waiting for her training partner and cheering her on. Wow. Wow!!
1.5 HR ski, yea! All week I ran on the treadmill, did an exercise tape and yoga stretches but today I finally got out there. 10 degrees, wasn’t cold at all. The trail got snow and hadn’t been groomed but it was fine. Tomorrow we are going to another trail which has been groomed so it will be easier.
Came home and watched the Olympic trails, that was fun. Can’t believe how fast they are, it always amazes me. I was glad to see Desiree Linden move into second. And of course Meb! Who couldn’t root for him.
Good job, MOWC. You didn’t quit and that’s a win.
Sounds beautiful, Deb.
I ran 9 miles this morning and it was COLD! Temperature was 10 degrees and windchill was -3. I dressed for the weather and it wasn’t too bad, but with layers I felt as if my mobility was restricted. I didn’t think about it until after I got home, but if I had remembered I would have done an extra .3 miles to be doing a 15K in spirit with MOWC!
MOWC-great job!!! That’s a terrific time, especially under the conditions. Congrats to your daughter and husband also!
Gertrude-sounds like a fabulous trip so far! Enjoy that food while you’re there - you have to live a little!
I enjoyed watching the trials this afternoon!
I was so excited when Jared Ward came in 3rd for the men’s race in the OTs!! Utah/BYU athletes FTW!
