dmd- The Galloway method is magical because it is NOT about “needing to walk”. What it does is lets you do distance that is much longer than anything you thought you could do with much less fatigue and discomfort. That said, I would definitely try a gel or beans at 45 minutes- or a good sports drink. I like HumaGel, personally.
Did a TRX/swim workout this morning. Not usually a morning workout person but it seems like morning folks are fitter, less sociable and more hardcore than afternoon folks!
Hi everyone - back from NYC. It was NOT a relaxing trip, but was a week of pure adrenaline and a lot of fun. Now I am sick as a dog, along with many of you. I’m going to spend today just “being sick” before returning to real life.
My 15-year old D, who had been feeling a bit down & anxious about high school life, is on a high after the trip. She’s a total Broadway fanatic & we pretty much lived & breathed Broadway for a week, including getting some photos/autographs of some favorite actors at the stage door. So all in all, totally worth it!
I started out the day with a 3.2 mile run with Back on My Feet and it was great. Nice to have reasonable temperatures for a change.
ohiopublic-haha, I like your observations about morning workout folks! I am looking forward to retirement someday and being able to exercise in the morning at a reasonable hour. I know plenty of people who do 5:00 and 5:30am workouts, but I just can’t be a part of that crowd.
Gertrude-it sounds as if you had a fabulous week! What a wonderful way to spend time together with your daughter. Sorry you aren’t feeling well, I hope you get over it quickly.
Romani - I hope you clear the waitlist
Galloway saved my last marathon. No way I would have been able to run up those hills in 80+ degree scorching heat.
Dmd, running in circles even on the nicest trail would be a joy-killer for me. I agree about trying to have a snack after an hour or so. If nothing else, it has a great psychological placebo effect! Huma gels are awesome.
Hope all affected by colds are getting better!
I’m running a 5K with my daughter tomorrow. We’ve agreed to stick together and keep the pace a little slow for the first two miles–and then race the last mile (which is slightly downhill). That should be fun.
As a result, I just walked with the dogs this morning, taking both of them over to our local park. It’s beginning to be spring here, and we saw a lot of squirrels. There were two red squirrels who stopped to stare down the dogs from their large, well-mossed tree (it was about 3 feet in diameter). After a moment, the squirrels took off up the tree, and my dogs went after the squirrels, one to the left, one to the right. Me holding the leashes? I hit squarely in the middle… Moss smears down the front of my jacket but no damage
Ugh, unwelcome news. Despite my thyroid otherwise testing fine, I have the elevated antibodies which indicate Graves or Hashimoto’s (both autoimmune diseases related to the thyroid, and my mom has Graves). Boo
Question: for people that take multiple medications or medications that can possibly cause adverse reactions if mixed with other meds, do you carry around anything that states your medication lists just in case of an accident or something? I know some people do this if they have certain conditions or certain allergies (such as with medical bracelets), but what about just a regular list of meds? Is there somewhere that EMTs or whomever look to find this type of information?
(I’ve been sitting in a clinic all morning without a book so I’ve had a lot of time to kill thinking about random things… lol)
Romani - you can put that information in your phone on the health app under Medical ID. I am pretty sure the first responders (hopefully you never need them) know to look for that.
Perfect, thanks fallgirl! I assumed there was something like that but I wasn’t sure what.
Sorry you are dealing with that. You can also wear a RoadID and put all that information on it.
I want to run a few miles after work (we are getting out early due to our bonus payments today) but the wind is incredible. I could not open the door to the building! We don’t get this kind of wind very often. It’s gorgeous, otherwise- in the 60s. I plan to go to the mostly sheltered trail, so I hope it will be better.
Nice to hear there was a bonus payment - always good news!
It is colder than I thought it would be and windy here as well. I’m hoping the warmer weather is here tomorrow. Rest day other than pup walks - I don’t think I’m giving myself enough time to rest between classes so after working with my trainer yesterday I skipped circuit class this morning. My upper body is really tired.
Yay to bonuses!
The weather here sucks. Rain and wind. I will be ok with either, but when they are mixed together, it makes my runs miserable.
Had to laugh at dmd’s squirrel story. Glad that no animals or humans were harmed.
@romanigypsyeyes – I wear a RoadID (www.roadid.com) that lists all my emergency contacts (and the vet, too). They have another version that links to a website that you can update whenever you want.
Yes to RoadID. If your iPhone is on auto lock/code with your data inside it, even the FBI would have a hard time getting to it.
In time of emergency, old fashioned, low-tech approach beats new tech. Phones get broken, run out of batteries, etc.
My H has all of his medications written down and in his wallet. He also has a road id. My D told me that they have z road id which attaches to his fit bit but the road id is comfortable like wearing a live strong like bracelet. There is also a road id app, which you can list your emergency contact information as your lock screen. It’s pretty cool.
One thing I like to say when people have multiple medications. Your Dr may not be up on all medications and interactions but the pharmacist is a great tool. I know no one seems to talk to the pharmacist anymore but that is their job and should be consulted. Off my soap box now lol!
Haha I actually do talk to my pharmacist because my mom had a seizure after a drug interaction. It’s always made me paranoid hence the thinking about these things.
I’ve never heard of RoadID so thank you all!
Nevermind… figured it out
I have made an unanticipated journey back to SW Florida to help out my mom. It’s been a long day, for sure. I was up very early to get to the hospital for a calcium screening test; then home for a 3 mile sanity run before the long drive south. Once here my much younger sister wanted to take a short run together. Ugh, she left the geezer behind, so I ran slowly on soft wet sand for 3 on my own. It was too warm. Feeling a tad cranky and tired.
Good luck in your race dmd!
Good luck with your mom PlantMom.
Wow,leave this thread for a day or so and feel like you left for a week! A testimony to how busy and active everyone is!
Romani, you keep your head up though all this medical business. You WILL land with a diagnosis and then a treatment and “this is how I’ll deal with it” plan. You’ve had some good feeling days lately - you will have more!
Managed to knock out my cold for the most part pretty quickly. But had to spend 3-4 hours in the car yesterday and again today and a couple of long work meetings, I knew I had to settle for steps only. And that I did yesterday (even telling my daughter who I was spending the night with that we couldn’t go out to eat until I got 3000 more steps on my Fitbit! ) Followed that by getting up early this morning and getting another long walk in before dressing and heading to a 6 hour meeting. Drove the 2.5 hours home - the temp was 60 today! I got home about 6:15 - dusk. But it’s SIXTY DEGREES!! I literally gathered up my stuff from the car, ran in the house, dropped everything, grabbed my sports bra and a pair of capri tights and hustled myself outside for a couple miles before it got too dark. OMG, it felt so wonderful! Didn’t even care that the wind was wicked one way! Tomorrow it’s suppose to be 60 again, but no wind. Can’t wait to spend some time out in it!
This weather is crazy. I ran at 4pm and it was 70! I felt pretty awful to start from my cold and dry mouth from the cough pearls the doc prescribed. I’m really not significantly better so I started the antibiotics tonight. The run got better as I went along. 3.5 done and 1.1 this morning before work. I also had a short walk with the dog.
