Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Love this community. <3

Boy you go away for the day and things get crazy around here

So glad that you finally got a diagnosis, Romani! I’m figuring by what you said that you are going on Remicade. My H is on enbrel (same class of drug). It’s been a lifesaver. Can’t say how much it has changed his life for the better. One of my D’s friends had ulcerative colitis and again Remicade helped her also.

Love the hair, D dyed her hair bright, bright burgundy. It’s super cute except for the fact that the color bleeds over everything. She’s had it this color for the past 6 months or so. She says the old men she works with have no idea what to say about it though.

So sorry @PlantMom about the family struggles, those really stink.

Rest day for me, the foot is still giving me problems so I’m babying it.

Kinda funny fitness story. We are going on vacation in a couple of weeks. Apparently there are big cross fit games or something going on. Anyways D was trying to get the address of the condo so she can find the nearest cross fit gym. I was in lululemon and the men in there were going on about these big going ons at the gym tonight. I asked and yes they were cross fitters. I was telling them how D was trying to find a gym and they were “of course that is what you would do. This is a big deal”. Lol!

I’m going on Plaquenil pills and Actemra infusions (I think I said transfusions before- wrong word!). I just have to be careful because apparently many of the more common RA treatments make Lupus worse (and can cause drug-induced Lupus… which today I learned was a thing!)

On a side note, I found out that Plaquenil is an antimalarial drug that has been used for around 100 years. It was discovered that you could use it as a treatment for Lupus quite by accident. The medical historian in me is fascinated by this.

Hope your foot feels better, deb!

On a side note (not that I am thinking about it but my sister is): what are people’s thoughts about Cross Fit? I have heard a lot of mixed things.

I have tried it, but I am not a major fan, especially for the folks on this board who ( with the exception of you!) are 40-50-60. Too much pounding, a little too showboaty, a little too competitive, and not well supervised. I think Orange Theory or other HIIT ( high intensity interval training) can get you a lot of the same benefits without injury.

You have to be very careful about selecting a cross fit gym that is run by trained individuals who really know what they are doing. There are a lot of very real horror stories about injuries and serious overuse muscle damage caused by “trainers” at cross fit gyms who have no legitimate credentials or training. The problem has been that as “Cross Fit” has grown in popularity as a brand, people were literally just paying the fees to use the brand and get the programming with no oversight or controls. Many of the exercise movements are ballistic, form is often compromised to get a rep, and some of the exercises pushed by some cross fit gyms are just dangerously bizzare (like tossing loaded barbells back and forth between partners). That being said, if your daughter can find a well run gym, combining weight training with functional movement training and body weight training is a great approach to working out.

Here’s a link to a very objective and well thought through article on cross fit:

We tend to not be huge Cross Fit fans on this board. A couple on here (moderator MaineLonghorn for one) have had good experiences, but the quality of the instructors can vary tremendously from good/careful to completely negligent and poorly trained. That’s the big problem.

The cake was so-so. It was about 5 giant grocery store sheet cakes (which are pretty good) and I usually skip that sort of thing, preferring homemade or bakery stuff. The fact that I wanted it at all was a good sign- and I did enjoy it!

Hugs Plant mom and Romani.

Thanks, Fall!

And thanks everyone for the info about Cross Fit. This might be biased of me but I’m worried that she might not find great trainers where she lives since she lives in a pretty rural place. I just don’t want to see her get hurt. (I’m very much the worrier sister and she’s the one to dive head first without checking the depth of the pool.)

Follow-up on something I posted about earlier (just in case it’s of future use to anyone). It does seem like it was the Prednisone that was causing the night terrors. Switching to taking it in the morning has made that problem go away completely.

I know I’ve posted this before. My sports med doc has said that CrossFit has been great for his business.

I am delighted that 9.1 miles are in the bank and the dogs have been walked. I am looking forward to a restorative nap this afternoon!

I had to laugh - when I started this thread, crossfit was actually something I was thinking of trying. Good Lord. I don’t know if I’d be using a cane now or would have moved directly to a walker.

Here’s another really good critique of Crossfit that gets into the difference between exercise and training and why Crossfit as an exercise program can promote a high incidence rate of injuries (because it lacks sound concepts of progressive training).

The problem in finding a really competently run Crossfit gym is that in order to operate under the Crossfit brand, all you need to do is take a one weekend, 2 day course for $1000 and pass a written test. There are no prerequisites other than that. So you have a lot of people with no education or formal training in the fitness industry who just take the weekend course and open a gym (which requires a very minimal investment compared to other types of fitness facilities). Then, once every 5 years, you need to take the course again. While they offer higher levels of instructor training and certifications, you never need to take them to be able to operate a Crossfit facility. Compare this to well respected fitness trainer certification programs where you spend several months getting trained in the foundations of anatomy, physiology, kinestheolgy, nutrition, psychology of behavioral change, concepts of exercise progression, goal setting, etc and must do 24 hours of continuing Ed every 2 years at a minimum to maintain your certification.

sabaray- congrats on a great morning!

Boy, I hope no one else gets this norovirus bug. I was looking forward to getting out in the sunshine for 5 miles. Well, I did do it, but it did not go well. I just have no strength back yet. Climbing the smallest incline was hard. I had to stop a few times just to regroup. HR was a little high (especially for the very slow pace) but mainly I just felt weak. I got the 5 miles done, but I sure am ready to feel normal again. I think we have only had 3 sunny days (officially) this whole month, so at least I could enjoy the sun.

MOWC, did you end up getting tested for Noro? It’s extremely rare that it would last this long and I’m worried you might have something else.

Either way, hope it clears up soon.

Ugh, that’s no fun MOWC :(. My sister was out of commission for a week. Hope you’re back up to par soon.

Hope you feel better! What I had came on violently (couldn’t even keep tea or water down) but it was largely over in 24 hours and I was good as new by 48 hours. Yours sounds worse!

When one bug takes over a body already beaten up by another bug, recovery can be long and slow. :frowning:

I am amazed that my daily city walking gets me close to 10,000 steps. Out of curiosity, I kept track of my step counts for my daily activities. Fascinating. Making breakfast is 250-300 steps for me.

I made it through a 16 mile run this morning. It went pretty well, although the last few miles were really hard and at the moment it is hard to fathom being able to run an additional 10 miles in mid-April. But I’m on track per the training plan so I’ll just keep plugging away. I got through the run without having to take any walking breaks and maintained a good pace. We’re going to a black tie event tonight so it’s nice to have those extra calories available. H jokes that he did the run this morning to get out of dancing tonight.

Pizzagir l- I’m glad you had a quick recovery and are back to new now.

MOWC - I hope you’re able to rest this weekend to help get your strength back. 5 miles was probably overly ambitious this morning.

Romani - thanks for the info on prednisone and night terrors. Good info to know.

Good job, C3B.

I ran 4 miles on the treadmill Thursday evening, so I thought 5 outside would be OK. I’m better, but I think I just lost strength from not being able to eat. My weight is very low (not complaining) and it almost seems like I’m dehydrated, but I don’t think I am. Like Bunsen said, it just takes some time (especially at age 63) to bounce back. I’m OK in my daily activities. Just went to a funeral and have the big basketball game coming up with the obnoxious opposing fans.

I didn’t get tested, but I’m sure it was norovirus or it’s twin. The stomach part was very short-lived.

Slow flow yoga this mirning and a
2.5 mile puppy walk.
