Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Just realized … Bummer, can’t wear the Fitbit in the pool! (They are designed to handle a splash or two, or quick immersion, but not true swimming or showering). How many steps to add for an hour of near constant walking, running and cross country skiing motions??

Same Q for the active minutes. Do you guys track / have a goal for those? The Fitbit default seems to be 30.

I keep mine set at 30. I had 12 active minutes yesterday despite doing my usual hill routine. Go figure.

Pizzagirl, I am sure you can log your activity in the Dashboard - just type in aquajogging (this is what it is in a nutshell), and see if it is already set in the options. If not, you can add calories burned (but not # of steps, there is not such input option).

It is a bummer that Fitbit calculates calories burned using HR and age/weight. Mr burns 60% more Fitbit calories than I do. Grrr. He is male, slightly less athletic, slightly older, and weighs roughly 50 pounds more than I do.

Thanks to people here, I now know to log classes such as yoga. I also reset the active minute goal to 45, but almost always exceed it.

Ok, I’m sitting here at a Whole Foods grabbing a quick dinner before the fluid running - but I will go broke if I do this everyday. I realize I need to be disciplined re stocking / bringing food w me. What great non perishables do you stock? (Eg in purse, car, gym bag)

@Pizzagirl … Fitbit actually calls it “water jogging.” Who woulda thought?

I find that Kind bars, dried apples, jerkey, string cheese (yup, it will not go bad in your bag without refrigeration), and almonds work for me.

I found at Trader Joe’s “Brie bites” which are the size of Babybel cheese. That plus an apple is good. I was super hungry mid afternoon so I ate 3 packages of turkey jerky - not good.

Spinning, TRX and swimming. Spent time on the Keiser spinning bikes that they’ll use in the triathlon this weekend. Mantra this weekend - Don’t Think, Just Swim (Pedal or Run)

My go-to non-perishable snack is a mix of plain cheerios, nuts, and maybe some dried tart cherries or raisins. I’ve also been on a mandarin kick with Halos or Cuties. Another favorite is a nutbutter on whole wheat crackers (Whole Foods 365 brand woven wheats). And always a few slices of cheese. Can’t take the Wisconsin out of this gal  We still like Lara Bars, too.

Congrats to you on your running and nearing your goal weight, dmd! 5 pounds away sounds like a 5 # party coming soon!!!

Just a walking day for me. I have probably 3 miles of beach strolling in with assorted miscellaneous steps approaching 20K for the day. Fitbit has given me 137 active minutes today. It does not feel that way to me. I go many days without meeting my 10 flight stair goal!!! We have a first floor master and Florida is incredibly flat.

Congratulations dmd on being so close to your goal. We all appreciate the discipline and consistency that is required to get there!

Ohio- you will do fine. It sounds fun.

I did a short run on the treadmill at work after work and before a dinner I had to attend. They were having a combination spin/exercise class in the spin bike room. It was well attended. I was impressed! I’m glad we have such a good resource at work.

I’m another fan of homemade trail mix. But sometimes I want savory. Can you pack a little lunch bag with a small frozen ice pack thingy and then pack it with veggie sticks, bites of your favorite cheese, small hummus packs, hard boiled egg - if you want more savory items???

Mixed bag today.

Sore joints today but I was able to go out and about a little bit.

Got good news from my most recent tests- so far, no joint damage and my kidneys are functioning just fine (a potential complication of Lupus). I take the good news when I get it.

I also am down 2 pounds! I am still up nearly 30 lbs from when I got sick, but I am not going up anymore and that feels wonderful. I’m at a little over 220 and my eventual goal is to get down to 180. I’m a little scared of my weight shooting up again as I’m back on Prednisone but some of my meds are appetite suppressors and some increase appetite.

I think the weight of the diagnosis is slowly dawning on me as I come to terms with my body’s limitations and start making lifestyle changes. I am still very optimistic but I am also mourning a bit.

Winter weather is coming yet again, so got out this morning for 4 easy miles followed by a Pilates session, which went surprisingly well. I did some foam rolling post run which seemed to help quite a bit.

I hope the meds help you on all levels, Romani. Steroids can really mess with your weight, but it sounds like some of the other meds might counter that. I’m glad that you are optimistic, but I certainly understand your sadness and mourning. It is a new-normal, for sure. Hang in there.

I dodged a bullet. Managed to get myself out of bed for a 3.1 mile run. I thought I could beat the cold rain (36 degrees) and I mainly did. It rained on me a little bit, but I had a jacket on so it didn’t bother me. Within 2 minutes of being home there was a downpour. I would have been soaked and miserable. So- at least I got outside.

I talked to a nurse friend of mine last night and she was shocked that I only missed 2 days of work with the norovirus bug. She said the strain that is going around here is very bad and knocking people down for a couple of weeks. I guess that’s why I still don’t feel terrific.

Wow, that was a lucky run, MOfWC!

2 months and counting of beginning and ending my days with 20 pushups. Mr. B finally stopped teasing me about that.

Very good news.

This morning, I froze my tush waiting for the bus. I started walking the route hoping to catch it along the way. 4,000 steps in my Fitbit bank, and no frozen extremities.

Thanks MOWC and VA.

They took more blood when I went in for the bad knee pain last week. Those results just came in and my inflammation markers are through the roof again- higher than they were when I first got sick and wasn’t in treatment. They were down in January and I was put on Prednisone when they went up again. Now they’re still going up even though I’m on several anti-inflammation meds. Boo! But at least I know now why my body is so danged cranky.

I’m really, really ready to start the infusion treatment. It’s supposed to be like a godsend to joints. I should start within a week or so… waiting for it to go through insurance approval. Hmpf.

Still chugga-luggin’. Even when I’m more sore one day (like today), I remain optimistic that tomorrow will be better.

^^^^Are you taking grad classes Romani? If so, that has to be stressful on top of all that is going on with the RA and lupus. Hope you can start the infusion treatments asap.

Worked with my trainer this morning. I am progressing with my bench press weight goal and moved up in weight amt. today. Also spent 20 minutes on the Cybex arc–had to leave early to get my D from the airport. She is in the area for grad school stuff before she leaves for an acting gig in Iceland on Sunday. We went to a relax and restore yoga class earlier this evening.
