Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I hope it goes well, Romani.

Short walk early this morning. Hoping I can get to the gym later.

Thoughts with you, Romani.

I slipped, tripped, and didn’t fall this past weekend, straining a bunch of muscles in the process – and have been sore and achy ever since. Monday I could barely move. Today was the first day I felt like walking (I did take the dogs around the block yesterday, and also went for a very short swim, mostly as an excuse to sit in the hot tub at the pool afterwards). I decided it was smart to scratch from Saturday’s 10K trail race and sent the race director a note (they only allow 50 people in the 10K, 200 total between the half, 5K, and 10K)–and got back a code for a free entry for the fall race, which was very generous! Now I just have to let those strained and bruised muscles heal.

45 minutes on the Arc + 1.5 miles on the treadmill; pup walk in a little while. I had a nice compliment this morning from a woman at the gym – she and I were walking out at the same time, and she told me I was her inspiration on the treadmill; her goal is to be able to walk as fast as I do. (I also run on the treadmill, although not this week since my foot is still bothering.) I don’t really “know” anyone at the gym, but I do have a nodding acquaintance with several people who are there at the same time as me. I just go in and “do my thing” every morning. Anyway, it was nice to hear.

Fabulous dinner out for D’s birthday last night – a place we hadn’t tried before. Incredible flavors! I skipped dessert.

Hoping for good results for you, romani.

Thank you so much for your advice. I’m not very active to be honest, but am trying. I’m doing a very slow jog right now but can’t usually make it far lol.

Thank you everyone for the spinning advice! I appreciate it and will let you all know how it goes

All done. Headache and really tired so they gave me something for the headache and kept me for observation to make sure it didn’t get worse.

No immediate pain relief (which sometimes happens) but that’s ok. Still hopeful

I’m hoping for you too Romani.

Me too. Hugs to you.

Good luck Romani!

Heated power yoga today and then to the gym for 40 minutes on the Cybex arc. The Cyber arc (elliptical type machine) didnt register many steps on the Fitbit Charge HR. I did get active minutes, but fewer steps than I thought.

So many aches and pains! We are a hurtin bunch today. Sending healing thoughts to everyone, and hoping that Romani’s treatment works.

I’m in NYC. Today I took a 6-mile run in Riverside Park, and realized that it was the first time I’ve spent any time in it.
My grandmother lived on the Upper West Side when I was growing up, and I went to Columbia for grad school. But that was back in the unsafe days, and I avoided Riverside Park like the plague. It’s a nice park and I had a nice run. I also walked a ton the last 2 days.

Romani – if you got a headache from your infusion, INSIST the next time that they slow down the rate of infusion and cap the rate at a very slow rate. I’d call your doctor and have that added to the order. That is very, very important. You’ll be there a lot longer but it could make a night and day difference in how you feel afterward. There are also premeds that could help; I would ask your doctor about that.

Ok not telling, will do. The headache wasn’t until the medicine was done and they were using saline. Does that make a difference?

I was exhausted afterwards and came back and slept for a few hours… and I’m not a nap person.

Healing wishes to all of you on the mend.

I did go to the gym this afternoon where I ran 4 miles on the treadmill and did some upper body weights on the machines. It got up to 90 degrees this afternoon, but it’s a beautiful 79 right now. I just took a stroll to enjoy it!

20,000 steps despite having to sit on my butt 5 hours without a break!

Bromfield – This is what I use, too. (I much prefer it to an elliptical.) I’ve also been disappointed that I don’t get steps on my Fitbit, just active minutes. The trick, I’ve discovered, is to let your arms swing free, as opposed to holding on. My gym has 2 types of Arc machines, with and without moving arms. Even using the model with moving arms doesn’t seem to register steps, so the last several days I haven’t been holding on. I mean it’s all about getting the Fitbit to buzz at your step goal, right?

You guys are too funny with the step counts!

Pilates this morning which was lots of stretching and focus on alignment, working my feet, ankles, calves and hip flexors. It’s so hard to get my creaky joints moving but I always feel so much better at the end.

Weather just sounds awful for the weekend. Cold, rain and snow. A 10 mile hilly race sounds even more appealing now!

Sabaray, thanks for the info on tart cherry juice. I’ve read some articles now and it does seem like a good thing to try. Of course, the additional calories are a concern. Do you take it daily or just before/after long runs? And have you noticed pain relief, is it as effective as ibuprofen? I like your other suggestions as well, and may look into a massage. I remember my daughter got a “sports massage” when she was training for a marathon and said it was great.

My pain is not a specific injury-type pain and it is symmetric. I hurt equally on both legs, mainly upper hamstrings and glutes. My new running shoes should arrive today so I am hoping that will help. I have a workout with my trainer at the gym tonight but I think I’ll stay and do a couple miles on the treadmill afterwards to try them out. They are the same size and style as what I’ve been wearing so there shouldn’t be any issue but it would be good to get a little bit of use out of them before running the half marathon on Saturday.

dmd77 - sorry that you had to scratch from your trail race on Saturday but that sounds like the smart thing to do under the circumstances. It’s great that they are giving you a free entry to a race in the fall!

CBBBlinker - glad to hear that you enjoyed the celebration dinner out!

Romani - I hope the headache is gone. Are you feeling any relief from your symptoms? How often will you be getting these treatments?

I only use it when I am running ten miles or more. I do not take it everyday but I have found it as effective as ibuprofen. The brand I use does add up to 120 calories which would be a concern if I were using it daily; then I would be more inclined to use the capsules.

I would mention the discomfort you’re experiencing to your trainer - my hamstrings and glutes have been uncomfortable recently due to an increase in hill work, so this morning we worked on some stretches that require the assistance of a second person to really be effective. Tomorrow I’ll just stretch and perhaps a slow mile.

Headache is gone but the other symptoms aren’t. It’s mostly confined to my back and hands now but my back has been really, really annoying. Not so much painful like sharp pains but just an intense dull ache that won’t go away. My professors emailed me and told me to stay home and relax today so I’ll take their advice lol. I’ll email my doctor about it tomorrow if it’s still bad.

I still don’t understand how the medicine works so I’m not sure if pain relief should be instant or gradual. It’s a biologic immune suppressant so I’d assume it takes a while but I don’t know.

I go back in two weeks, two weeks after that, and then every 4 weeks.

I’m planning out my races for the rest of this year - suddenly I want to sign up for all of them! Here in San Diego, there is a half marathon every month except September. I think I’ll try to do 3 more this year & mix in some races of other distances. Any opinions on how many is too many?
