Thanks, MOfWC! Zappos has 3 colors in my size 9.5…so now I have a problem. Yellow or purple or grey?

LOL. I was just looking at them on Zappos and I would go for the yellow- but I seem to be into yellow shoes right now! My grey isn’t bad, though.

Love reading about everyone’s high school experiences… I did synchronized swimming back when it was called “water ballet”. I remember finding it challenging–and it was certainly a lot more fun than lacrosse, which was the other spring sport at my all-girls high school (back when girls had to cradle vertically, which was impossible).

I’m jealous reading about everyone’s runs. I came up with the flu (apparently) last week and am just recovering now. It was a huge effort, leaving me sweaty and panting, to walk the dog two miles slowly this morning. But I am way better than I was!

I like my running clothes to be “colors not found in nature” so that drivers can’t miss me. So yellow, @BunsenBurner !

Thanks for the recommendations! Yellow it is. B-)

Feeling good today. Comparatively good at least. I didn’t realize that my fitbit fell off in the middle of the night so I don’t know how many steps I’ve gotten in but I made a slow walk around the block.

Baby steps, baby steps!

I’m so thankful that this winter has been very forgiving around here. Very few extremely cold days and very little snow.

Also, Mr R pointed out that I haven’t mentioned hand pain in a few days. He’s right- I haven’t noticed any hand pain in at least a day or so. It’s funny how pain can go away so slowly that you don’t even notice it. Either way, I’m very happy  Hoping this means one of the treatments is beginning to work. :D/

Dmd, so sorry about the flu. Hope your recovery will be quick. Half of my office was hacking and sneezing on Friday, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that my Metro rides provided me with enough immunity to any bugs du jour out here.

I did absolutely nothing physically in high school as I was pretty much a bookworm, but I actually did have a part time job at a store that sold athletic clothing and supplies (similar to a Foot Locker). I was trained on all the shoes and what was good for pronation, supination, etc. Shoe technology was really in its infancy compared to today though! I did develop certain “prejudices” about shoes from those days - New Balance was just coming on the scene and was the leader in tech, Brooks were horribly made, Reebok were more fashion than performance, etc. I confess I stick with NB based on this!

Romani, fingers crossed for you big time. Glad to hear things are improving.

Oh yeah I wanted to ask for suggestions.

Because I’m always hungry, I’m looking for low calorie options to snack on. I’ve done a good job transitioning to fruit but I know that the amount of fruit I’m eating every day isn’t great either (high sugar) but definitely better than the alternative (which for me would be something like chips and chip dip).

I’m not lacking in any nutrients so I’m good on that front but I’m looking for mostly grab and go snacks that are filling or at least low in calories. Drinks are also acceptable. Any suggestions?

(I’m a vegetarian who doesn’t like chocolate for what it’s worth. )

Do you like tofu? Chop some up, add some chopped green onion, and add some miso soup from either a package or reconstituted packet. Then sip sloooowly.
Then your stomach hunger receptors that register its fullness will tell the brain, “We are good.” For the same reason, sipping on a cup of green tea before a meal is a great idea.

Peanuts in shells. You can’t just scarf them down in a minute. Read a book while eating them. Read a few paragraphs, them pick the nuts out of one. Repeat. The goal is to snack slowly, so all of your hunger receptors will work in unison and send the same signal to the brain.

Try to transition from fruit to chopped veggies: celery, bell peppers, cucumbers, edamame, carrots.

Anything with lots of protein and lots of fiber will be good.

Cut up celery is satisfying from a crunch standpoint. Maybe add a bit of hummus.

I know you didn’t ask for fruit suggestions, but you can freeze bananas (peel them first) and they taste like a frozen ice cream treat!

Another suggestion if you are eating fruit is to pair it with cheese. I often pair an apple or a pear with cheese - string cheese, Babybel, or mini Goat or Brie medallions (Trader Joe’s carries them). It’s more satisfying than just the fruit alone.

A SMALL amount of nuts – for me it’s worth buying the 100 calorie packs because I’m not great at portion control.

I like ready made protein shakes but you have to be careful of the calorie content and they are expensive so I don’t have them all the time. I like Pure Protein brand, but there are many out there.

Protein powder, frozen bananas, and some milk and Greek yogurt in a blender… Nice snack.

I advise against having readily edible bars, shakes, etc. - too easy to eat more than one. When you have to do some work to make a shake, peel a cuke, chop some carrots… it is less tempting to get a second serving.

Of course, if this something you have to pack to go, then bars etc. are a good idea. But make sure that they are off limits for snacking while you are at home.

I like a spoonful of peanut butter if I’m really hungry!

dmd- get well! Sorry that hit you.

Just consumed mega-food after our 2 hour Easter Vigil service. The post-service reception is awesome, but it’s late to be eating that much. Fruit, little sandwiches, pastries, wine, meatballs, shrimp…on and on.

So happy that we hit the trail today - it is already raining hard. Mr. and I skipped lunch almost completely and decided to go out to dinner to use our discount which we earned by dining there on Valentine’s Day. Ate sensibly - no appetizer or dessert!

My new Hokas are going to be here Tuesday. Yay!!! My first shoe purchase in more than a month. B-)

Two more suggestions:

  1. There is a brand called Yumbutter Go which makes various nut butters in squeezable packaging kind of like GoGo Squeez applesauce packaging. Just one or two squeezes is really filling and it’s totally portable. I keep them in my gym bag. I get it at Whole Foods but you can order online. They are expensive, though. A cheaper alternative might be Justin’s portion controlled nut butter packs.

  2. Beef or turkey jerky. You have to exert a lot of effort in chewing and that is satisfying as well (to the point that you can’t just gulp down jerky).

Hard boiled eggs are a good snack choice too. The hospital where my husband works offers snack packs of 2 hb eggs, already peeled. Jackpot!

Happy Easter to all who celebrate! We went to the Easter Vigil last night, with D, followed by a very late dinner. D, who is incredibly fit, and H, who is not, both scarfed down large burgers. In anticipation of today’s Easter dinner, I had a small salad. I really can’t/don’t like to eat large meals that late in the evening.

We go to BIL & SIL’s for Easter – fun day with about 20 relatives on H’s side. Then we’re off to the beach house for a week so H can start prepping the boat for the season. He needs to start early since we’ll be gone for 3 weeks in late April/early May. I’m looking forward to some outside running and walking!

Growing up with 2 older brothers, I was pretty much a tomboy. I still throw a mean football. In HS I played field hockey and basketball and did track my senior year, which was the first year there was a girls’ track team. I have somewhat vague memories of the girls’ basketball rules back then – it wasn’t full court, as I recall; you could be called for “over & back.”

Romani - some of the (non-fruit) snacks I enjoy are : almonds (I eat 10), low fat string cheese, hard boiled eggs (already mentioned), baby carrots with hummus.

Romani - Mr. Sabaray helped me at the grocery store yesterday and something I picked up for him were Sargento snack packs - cheese, nuts and dried fruit - the ones he wanted were 180 calories. At Trader Joe’s on Friday I got individual packs of raw nuts for him as well. The individual packs really help with portion control. Do you like edamame? I can buy individual packs of pods at Costco that get microwaved - opening the pods helps with not eating a million! Or English peas - opening the pods for a nice raw treat. Yum.

We are having an even quieter Easter than initially planned - my mother was coming for dinner and she is under the weather. D and BF are visiting his family this weekend. I bought a huge piece of wild King salmon for dinner today - I think it will be lunch tomorrow as well.

Cloudy and overcast, but the pups and I have already enjoyed a walk. No planned exercise for today - my legs are tired.

Carrots, cherry tomatoes, those sugar snap peas, nuts in controlled amounts (I also have trouble with portion size).

I like fruits that have a lot of water, like melon. They fill you up.
