Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I agree with the Stance socks. Who knew I could be trendy? I also like the boot socks. Very comfy. I gave an extra pair of the boot socks to daughter who initially turned up her nose, then wore them all the time. She usually wears her socks inside out, so that says plenty about the comfort.

@MaterS thanks I didn’t know that. It’s finally starting to feel better today but it’s still nagging a bit and has limited mobility.

I tried medical marijuana (an edible) last night finally. It was low THC so very little high but just enough that most of my pain subsided (actually, it was more like my body just didn’t really care about the pain) and I slept for over 10 hours and didn’t wake up once due to pain. That’s only happened about 10 times since November. I’m used to getting around 6 hours because that’s as long as my body will normally let me sleep.

So it looks like I’ve found a pain management system that works for now.

And it’s snowing out. I’m not ok with this lol. It was near 70 just a few days ago :frowning:

Snow on and off here today as well. Cut the grass two days ago, now snowing. Yep.

I think I did about 5.5 miles around the neighborhood. Waived at the folks working on their yards while running. Not my fastest run, but I enjoyed the sun and the spring flowers.

Sorry to hear about the snow, abasket and romani! Cleaned the grill and grilled some halibut and asparagus for lunch. Dinner is going to be awful - we are going to a fancy pants event with “heavy appetizers.” I suspect those will comprise cheese, baked goodies, more cheese, and lots of wine.

@C3Baker, yay. You are ready. Conquer the race.

@sabaray, to answer your Q about the size : I normally take 9.5 in Hokas, and wear size 40 Euro shoes (8.5-9 US or so), so Vanquish 2 fits just like other Hokas for me.

I generally wear 8 1/2 in running shoes (7 1/2 street shoes) but only go up to an 8 in Hokas.

Hmmm. I think I would still need a 10 - my feet are boats!

Yoga today and then a 3 mile walk. No running as my left ankle is a little sore again.

I have been thinking of expanding my fitness options beyond yoga and walking and the little running I do ( I also lift some hand weights a few times a week). Am considering barre, Orange Theory or Pilates. Problem is that with working I would only have time to take on a new activity a few times a month and I’m not sure that’s worth it. And it takes me forever to learn anything physical (I’m sue my proproception issues have a lot to do with that). So I’m not sure.

Took another rest day today. Just felt tired and achy and didn’t do much except grocery shopping and walking the dog–only have 5300 steps. It’s supposed to snow here tomorrow, which is really depressing.

@FallGirl – If you want to do weight training, I would start by getting a trainer and working with him/her to develop a strength routine that you can eventually do your own. I’m a klutz and my trainer really helped me learn proper form so that I feel comfortable going into a gym on my own and doing my strength routine. I still work with her once a week–used to work with her 2x a week.

Sorry, this made me laugh.

One-armed pull-up, that’s crazy.

Lol, notrichenough, I saw that too after my 15 minute edit time had lapsed. One of the rare times that my stupid iPad auto-correct actually substituted a word that while wrong added some contextually appropriate humor to a sentence.

1 armed pull-ups (and chin-ups, push-ups and handstand push-ups) are daunting. There’s a whole series of progressions that build from 2 arm versions through a decreasing reliance on the second arm until you get to the point of 1 arm. It’s a way of adding progressive overload in the absence of external resistance that is comparable to increasing weight on a barbell or weight machine. The added bonus to it is that the movements are complex multi joint movements to which an instability component is added thereby engaging a load of muscles that wouldn’t be engaged if doing traditional weight lifting that engages the same primary movers. What’s also cool about body weight training is that no matter where you are, you’ve brought your gym with you.

Apparently, in order to burn the number of calories Fitbit thinks I should burn, I have to run 5 miles and dance for 2 hours every day. Lol!

BB, because it low balls the calories you do burn in your activities or sets a overly high target?

It rained all day yesterday at the beach, so even the dog didn’t get much exercise. We drove back to MA last night and this morning … it’s snowing! And the forecast says more snow tomorrow. What??? Must be payback for our easy winter. At least here I can go to the gym. (I have a gym here and at the beach; my 6 months at the beach doesn’t kick in until May 1.)

First I had to Google “Ragnar” and then “Stance Socks.” This thread is such an education!

romani – glad you found some pain relief and were able to sleep.

D and I have a bridal shower to go to today. I had it on my calendar as starting at 11:30 AM – but just double-checked the invitation and it starts at 11:00. It’s in southern NH, and, as mentioned above, it’s snowing – so this should be fun. Plus, I first have to find my way to D’s new condo in South Boston to pick her up – thank goodness for GPS!

Rained a good bit of yesterday, so I ended up going an indoor structured wattage ride. Today the skies are mostly clear but there are 30-40 mph winds. That kills riding outside today. I was going to hang my cargo net, climbing rope and rings today but I don’t even want to risk going 12 ft up a ladder in these conditions. So another indoor ride today (sigh).

I think I’d like to try a Ragnar at least once - I’m not big on going without sleep, so I wouldn’t like that part, but it looked like a good time overall.

There’s just so many ways to do this running stuff - if you start to get bored or burned out, there are plenty of ways to change it up. I’m looking forward to running in some different parts of the country. I just have to remember to keep my head up and look around while I’m running - I can get pretty oblivious to my surroundings at times.

On that note, here’s a nice article about Meb from this morning’s local paper. I think we should all invite him for wine and gelato when he finally retires (see final paragraph!)

http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/2016/apr/03/time-tests-meb-keflezighi-a-smiling-olympian-still/

He has such an amazing story and legacy - and seems like an all around great guy.

We will invite Meb to a meet up, for sure! He is just so great of a person and runner! I knew Frank Shorter fairly well and admired him a lot. He had a horrific upbringing, which he revealed just a few years ago in an incredible Runner’s World article. Before I knew all that, he did some things in his personal life that didn’t impress me. Meb is so humble and gracious. Frank, for many reasons including his family of origin but also because of where the sport of running was in his heyday- not as much.

I want Meb to bring his kids to that meet!

Michael, to answer your question about Fitbit: it set my daily goal automatically at 2,061 calories. I have no idea why, but that was its default number, and I left it at that. Apparently, it counts caloric burn according to weight and heart rate… And I am very efficient at keeping my heart rate low! Even when I drag my heavy bag up the hill sprint-walking, it does not go into overdrive. So I rarely make the goal; the usual daily number registers around 1,800 -1,900 when I do my usual daily activities and/or add a run. I know it is not super accurate, but it is a good approximation of the reality.

I think I need to play around with my Fitbit more - I just haven’t been real motivated to do so!

Fun Barre class this am - it was a “pop-up” class to try a new format for the studio, so it was a lot of fun. Super challenging, but fun! Now I really am resting for the remainder of the day.
